A new Blu-ray release for this film is now up for pre-order on Amazon, and their info differs to what's listed here. This site's listing for the new release has it down as being 113 minutes long, while Amazon's has it down as being 102 minutes. I'm hoping this new release is/has the theatrical cut.

I'm not expecting it to be different than the previous release, others in the thread were speculating. I didn't use the cover art as a reference yesterday because it isn't the greatest source to go by, those sorts banners are sometimes just slapped on the cover but are not accurate, i.e Ace Ventura Pet Detective.

It really is pathetic though...is it THAT expensive to include both cuts via seamless branching? |

Some times it's very difficult to pull off, it depends how the cut was made. Watchmen's Director's Cut appears to have been completely remade from the ground up, meaning that whilst scenes may look the same, there are actually minor frame by frame differences which might be much on their own, but once added up make seamless branching prohibitive.

I have the old First Independent DVD with the theatrical cut on it, but I really want this on Blu. Think my local exchange has it for a £5, can't really go wrong especially now this new release apparently isn't coming out.

It is released in France by another studio (Metropolitan), who have had some great releases in the past. Apparently it's still the same old mediocre at best transfer. Or at least the France review site says that it's a VC-1 codec, which probably means it's exactly the same as the first 2008 release. Bummer. If it wouldn't be remastered, I was hoping that it would at the very least get a new encode (AVC with a higher bit rate) down the line for some release somewhere in the world.
But it looks like we're permanently stuck with the 2008 transfer. New Line/Warner probably won't allow another studio to have the master so they can re-encode it. |

My apologises for bumping a nine-year-old thread, but I noticed on the Vue website that this is among a bunch of old films that is apparently being played in cinemas again in January, and I can't figure out why that would be. My only guess (and hope) is that the film has been given a 4K remaster, possibly as part of Warner's 100 Years Celebrations, and that a brief cinema run will then lead to the theatrical cut finally getting a UHD/BD release after all these years.
