On second thought, it might have very well been a DVD case of A Hard Day's Night, because I only took a cursory glance at the back of the case. Hmmm.

No worries either way now, because I've already got the big edition.

This single-disc A Hard Day's Night Blu-ray was $15.96.

Man, had I know that this was going to be available, I might have waited to buy it instead of buying the huge edition that I currently own, even if it meant missing out on some extras. No huge regrets, but still...
Really? It must not include the booklet, as it's pretty big.

I wonder if there's something similar out there for Red River or Picnic at Hanging Rock...

Edit... just saw the replies... oh well.

Hmmmm, this sounds strange. Are you sure it wasn't the DVD?

Come to think of it, as I posted above, I'm not entirely sure that it was not a DVD edition, because I only took a quick glance.

If so, then apologies for the false alarm.

At first glance, nothing for me. The only one I'm familiar with is The Night Porter because it was one of the options to choose from to write an essay on in a film class of mine a couple years ago. That'd have to be a stream/rental type situation. The others I haven't seen either, and Time Bandits is only familiar to me because it's been mentioned here in this thread. It sucks that we didn't get a blockbuster of a title, but it'll give me a chance to pick up other Criterions in the November sale as there are a LOT I am interested in. Also, it's good to see an old DVD like The Night Porter get upgraded.

Just to counter the disappointment December's releases are generating, I'd like to throw in a good word for Safe. Julianne Moore is spectacular and it'll be worth it just for her performance, IMO. It's also highly stylized and a bit slow so I can't out and out recommend it as a blind buy for everyone, I will say if you're a fan of Todd Haynes, Ms. Moore, or 90s arthouse films, then this will be right up your alley. I saw it in college and it's stayed with me ever since. Can't wait to get it on blu.

Edit: just noticed there's a commentary with Haynes, Moore, and Christine Vachon. Vachon's book was required reading in film school and is a great look at producing independent cinema. Anyone know if it's a newly-recorded commentary or a rehash from the dvd/laserdisc?

Indeed. The set breaks down to less than $50 per release which is pretty good.

The seller might be gambling that most of them will be back in print sooner rather than later (or never).

Still, that does seem a little low for the lot. What's that work out to in dollars...$450? $475?...something like that?

Strange, I just watched The Night Porter for the first time several months ago after I borrowed it from the library. I was very underwhelmed. I found it to be a weak story and somewhat controversial. I'm definitely not interested in purchasing this whatsoever.

As for Time Bandits, I need to revisit this film. It's a loony Gilliam movie.

Safe is the only title here that interests me in the least. Julianne Moore was big in the 90s and still an amazing actress.

The Eclipse set looks interesting but I will pass.

Yes, its a light or "weak" month, but totally unsurprising. Criterion had a strong year and I expect 2015 to be even better.

I quite enjoy Time Bandits, even though it's a little dated - but I must say I wish Criterion had stuck with the same font/style for the film title as on the old DVD. The new one is quite ugly.

I agree that new font just seems like it is unfinished. I wouldn't be surprised if it get updated or changed before release.

Yes, finally Todd Hayne's Safe will be on Criterion where it deserves to be. Intrigued by the inclusion of his student short film The Suicide. This gives me hope that his earlier film Poison may get a Criterion release as well since the DVD transfer was terrible. That film seems not to be talked about much and it's much more accessible then Safe outside of certain umm.. scenes.

I already have the UK version of Time Bandits and I happy with it, so I'm not sure if I'll double dip since I'm thinking the transfer will be similar although the extras are different.

I'm not familiar with The Night Porter other it being the inspiration for a Duran Duran song I think, so I'll check it out on Hulu before I can comment.

I saw a job lot on EBay, was like 25 Criterions (in print ones) - greta mix that I wanted, only £240, so £10 a film, wanted so bad but didn't have money in time to buy D:

Really regret not borrowing it off parents lol
