Received both blu-rays today. Watched Avalanche and skipped through Meteor, will watch it over the weekend.
So-so presentations, not horrible, not great. In fact, I think Avalanche looks the strongest. Both movies have moments that are what we expect from the format. Other parts are pretty crappy looking, mostly effects shots. I was surprised with Meteor, as it's Kino/Fox & MGM stamped. It should've looked flawless. Avalanche at least was fun, mindless, but fun. I remember seeing it way back in the early eighties on tv. I've always liked Meteor, bad effects and all. Be prepared for static menus, no extras (aside from trailers), not many chapter breaks. If you love disaster movies, like me, you'll enjoy them. Last edited by JMDiaz718; 09-17-2014 at 01:20 AM. |

Meteor has DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 on the disc. It sounds like Mono to my ears...same as the old R1 DVD from MGM.
Also, Avalanche includes 2 Interviews on the disc, one is with Robert Forster and the other is with Roger Corman. I don't know why the OP missed those. Both are leaps and bounds superior over the ancient R1 DVD's. |

Well, if it is MONO the company employs *******s. I left several messages about the sound and for someone to contact me. I told them I was the consultant on the old Image Laserdisc which I made sure had the 4.0 mix. Not calling me back with questions is one thing - not looking in to it and getting the 4.1 mix is lazy.
It bothers me because if a title doesn't sell well the company hold it against the title not the way it was released. |

You guys also have to take a few things into consideration. Yes Synapse does amazing things with its releases. However, they never release as many titles as Shout or Kino does. The more work a title needs, the more it costs equals less other titles coming out. There is a budget every year and if they spend a lot on one title, that would mean less to license and release. While that would be fine for some, it would not be fine for everyone, as many people are happy with many of the titles that are out.
I agree that simply stating that this is what we got, is not ideal and that if a title is messed up they should either not accept it or save that one for a later date so they can fix the issues. Now I don't really know, but just speculating, maybe the 5.1 mix from the LD was not HD audio quality? For a title to be 5.1 on bluray, it must be in one of the lossless hd formats right? Perhaps the ld audio didn't covert well? Once again, Im not an audio guy but perhaps that is why? |

On the HTF, someone linked to an international print in STEREO that you plainly can see on Youtube. Even if they only had access to what MGM had in their libraries, Kino should have been more upfront and told us ahead of time at the very least. That Youtube video has better sound than this Blu-Ray!
