I think there is hope for cc to get back what was once theirs as studio canal/lions gate is just sitting on a bunch of the titles. It is probably all about money

That was quick, but not surprising as I imagine a lot of sweat starting pouring over there.

Contemporary Japanese films really could use some love by a Region 1 label like Criterion. I would love to see films by Kiyoshi Kurosawa and Takashi Miike get premium releases on Blu.

Thank you for purchasing ERASERHEAD from criterion.com. We are writing to let you know there is an issue on the current pressing of the film. It has come to our attention that about 65 minutes into the original camera negative, from which our new 4K master was created, there are 5 seconds of black where there should be a reaction shot of Jack Nance surrounded by fades to white.

We are aware of this issue and are preparing a corrected run of the ERASERHEAD Blu-ray disc and DVD Disc One (DVD Disc Two is not effected). When the replacement discs are available in a couple of weeks, we'll send you the correct version.

I won't bother to list, but yeah, there are a lot of Japanese (genre) titles (especially) I'd love to see available in HD.

Even Criterion makes grammatical errors.

DVDWORLDUSA CUSTOMERS!

If you need a replacement Eraserhead through Criterions replacement program, they have confirmed with me they can forward the disc on if I give Criterion their address for the disc

Just waiting to here back from Criterion if they can offer the replacement to UK customers - but seems so

I wonder if they'll recall all Eraserhead copies in stores now and reissue it with some indication on the UPC code or something that it has the corrected discs.

Anyone know if Criterion will be releasing Make Way for Tomorow on Blu-Ray? I'm sure they'll announce it right after I order the Eureka disc...

Seems a safe bet might be to wait for the BN sale in November. They should have it sorted it out by then.

Anyone else find it discomforting that this error came after David Lynch approved of the transfer? Shouldn't he have noticed this error?

I wouldn't think he would use a pressed copy to approve the transfer. They would like have him approve it before they print the discs, so that they could make any changes that he wanted them to make.

My guess is the 4k transfer was created, Lynch approved it then the blu was authored.

This presumes the error was in the authoring.

Yeah but in this case they say the problem was from their negative.

I'm guessing it will remain on "backorder" on Criterion.com until they have the corrected discs.

I watched Le Cercle Rouge last night. It was my second viewing. LCR was my first Melville film a few years ago and all I knew going in was that Ebert had included it in his The Great Movies column - meaning I didn't know JP Melville from the town Melville, NY.

I had been wanting to give it another look to re-evaluate my opinion of it.

Can someone explain two things to me?:
[Show spoiler]
1) there is a scene late in the film where the prison guard who told Corey about the jewel heist is talking to the gangster from who Corey stole all of the cash right after getting out of the joint - the gangster w/ Corey's old girl.

what does the scene establish? dialogue is so minimal in the film that not knowing who is who in relation to who threw me for a big - particularly in this scene

2) one of the last scenes.. Vogel crashes into the deal Corey is about to make with the main cop. the cop and Vogel have an exchange that goes like this?:

cop: why didn't you just tell him who I am?
Vogel: he would have stayed (or he wouldn't have ran) if I did.

again...

Lynch must have been watching the transfer on an improperly calibrated television set. Proper black levels are important.

It's also more difficult to detect color changes when watching a movie on an iPhone.
