I had been wanting to give it another look to re-evaluate my opinion of it.

Can someone explain two things to me?:
[Show spoiler]
1) there is a scene late in the film where the prison guard who told Corey about the jewel heist is talking to the gangster from who Corey stole all of the cash right after getting out of the joint - the gangster w/ Corey's old girl.

what does the scene establish? dialogue is so minimal in the film that not knowing who is who in relation to who threw me for a big - particularly in this scene

2) one of the last scenes.. Vogel crashes into the deal Corey is about to make with the main cop. the cop and Vogel have an exchange that goes like this?:

cop: why didn't you just tell him who I am?
Vogel: he would have stayed (or he wouldn't have ran) if I did.

again...
[Show spoiler]Corey, Vogel, and Yansen are done in partly because Corey's old boss, Rico, who is sleeping with Corey's old girlfriend and from whom Corey took money, is complicit in turning him in for the heist after finding out about it from the guard. Rico was apparently owed a favor by the first fence, who turned down the deal, which led to Corey and the other two having to find another fence to buy the jewels, which led to the police set-up. The guard told Rico about the heist, then Rico influenced the first fence to sabotage Corey's plans to move the merchandise quickly, probably knowing that their desperation to find another fence would lead to their capture.

The color red features in several of the scenes involving the circle of deceptions that lead to the final scene (a red rose, red lights at a traffic stop, blood on a banknote, etc.).

For the second scene that you mentioned, I assume that Corey wouldn't have wanted for Vogel to make a sacrifice for him (after Vogel realizes that Corey is about to be set up by the authorities posing as a fence).

I read your post wrong.

If you like Kurosawa, you should pick up The Hidden Fortress or, being that you are purchasing Macbeth, you mind as well pick up Throne of Blood.

leave it to the Owl! much more sensible explanation than what I read on imdb. Thanks, Owl! still convoluted (it made me think of how Bogart
[Show spoiler]explains the con in the last scene of
The Maltese Falcon) but logical.. maybe I'll follow better next time around.

You can't go wrong with Seven Samurai or Solaris, although I would say Seven Samurai is the safer purchase.
Oh you are in for a treat! I watched the other night and LOVED it, watch during day which I regret, late night viewing this weekend I think

I've been looking for a really good gothic horror film for the longest time - one that is not incredibly dated and feels silly. Hopefully this is the one.

The Innocents is a case where reading the source material (Turn of the Screw) heightens the viewing experience, imo.

Just waiting to here back from Criterion if they can offer the replacement to UK customers - but seems so
If it's anything like in the past Criterion will just send international customers a replacement directly, no need to go via retailer. We probably won't even have to send in the faulty copy either.

Speaking of contemporary Japanese releases in the states...

I knew Guilty Of Romance was getting a US release (both cuts of the film no less), but now I see that Himizu and Penance have US releases on the way. I don't think Penance has even had a blu release in Japan yet.

plenty of these are avaible in Region B countrys.. would be a waste really to have criterion release these.

I wanted to ask, would anyone be interested in THE HOURS, or would a release be possible by Criterion? (I don't know about rights and stuff).
I can't understand why this sublime film hasn't been released yet (except for a couple of European releases)

I'm not sure I get the Criterion release bit. I was pointing out that these are *already* coming out on blu in the US.

Watched this the other day, was more attracted to the score - but my god its was a superb film, and the acting was incredible - I didn't even recognise Nicole Kidman.

Really good film

One of Kidman's best performances, IMO. And that's saying a lot, considering how much I respect her talent.

I prefered her in Eyes Wide Shut - but she was so good at morphing into her character in The Hours - I think Julianne Moore stole the show though - also love Toni Collettes appearance (She was incredible in Murials Wedding!)

Well, those are three very talented actresses right there.

As to The Hours, I'd grab that up in a second if there were a Criterion (or heck, a quality Blu-Ray release at all).
