After our Hammer Studios discussion yesterday, I decided to watch my Blu-ray of The Vampire Lovers tonight instead of saving it for October. It's close enough to October anyway.

The Vampire Lovers is not quite as fun or urgent as Twins of Evil, but I'll nonetheless give it an enthusiastic thumbs-up. Ingrid Pitt is stunning in this movie, and Peter Cushing is superb, as usual. I am a long time fan of Madeline Smith, because I've always loved her brief role in Live and Let Die, so it's great to see her in a prominent role, even if her character gives a new meaning to "pretty vacant." This movie is a lot more tame than one would expect from the promise of the original artwork, but I love the mix of gothic atmosphere and eroticism.

I have to ask, though...

What is up with Hammer Films and horse carriage accidents?

I mean, after watching several Hammer movies, I'm just outright astounded that the human race even managed to survive before automobiles and seatbelts. How in the hell did anybody ever arrive at any location in one piece back in the 19th century?

If I were somehow magically transported back in time to the Hammer universe of central Europe in the 19th century, I would not be concerned about vampires, demons, or evil cults in the slightest, but you'd better believe that I'd be walking everywhere on my own two feet instead of sitting in some carriage waiting for the inevitable painful wreck. A choice between walking into a vampire castle in a Hammer film and riding a horse carriage in a Hammer film isn't a difficult choice at all. Give me the vampire castle any day of the week.

There's a wonderfully candid interview included in which Smith mocks her 'moon-eyed' performance in the film, as well as cheerfully discussing her then-burgeoning cleavage, among other things. Still a total sweetheart, and charmingly self-deprecating.

Yes, that is a great supplementary interview, and one of the most enjoyable Scream Factory extras that I've seen. Madeline Smith has aged well, and her sense of humor is infectious.

LOL, great observation! Never thought about the carriage accidents before, but they seem to be a cliché just like thunderstorms and travelers reaching that foreboding castle/ mansion in the middle of the night, in European gothic horror film.

***Upcoming Scream Factory Updates!***

Thought we'd start your day on a good note by sharing some updates of upcoming titles and hints of announcements coming up soon.

- Full specs for our Collector's Edition of LORD OF ILLUSIONS will be revealed in October. (Street date is 12/16.)

- We will be reporting good news in Oct for those of you curious about our uncut presentation of VAULT OF HORROR within our 12/2 double feature along with TALES FROM THE CRYPT.

- Previously announced PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (The Robert Englund one) and CANDYMAN II: FAREWELL TO THE FLESH are both planned for a Jan 2015 release.

- Previously announced NEW YEAR'S EVIL on Blu-ray is planned for late Feb. (Sorry guys, we tried for Dec this year of course but it didn't pan out.)

- Previously announced ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, MAD MAX, INVADERS FROM MARS and DOG SOLDIERS (which we had to move from this year as you know) are all planned from March through May. SCARECROWS is undetermined but still coming.

- We have a really great YouTube video series coming up calling "Why We Love It" starting on Oct 1st running all-month that will definitely appeal to fans of the movies we cover in it. Check out the trailer on our YouTube page at
and subscribe to the channel so you don't miss out seeing one!

- We will be announcing several titles in the month of Oct all for 2015 release. Expect more double features next year (much more than the 3 releases in 2014)...and some surprise titles that fit appropriately in the Scream brand even if they may not fall into the classic definition of a horror or sci-film. You'll see what we're talking about soon.

Nice!

New announcements + double features = what I want to hear

Anyone want to wager some guesses on the non-horror "suprise" titles? Would assume we'd be seeing culty stuff like Assault on Precinct 13 such as The Warriors, Big Trouble In Little China, Escape from LA, or The Burbs

Awesome! Glad to hear they didn't abandon Dog Soldiers, especially after I purposely sold my other copy on ebay in anticipation of the new release!

Also can't wait to hear about these "surprise announcements", hopefully it will be more well known 80's titles (at the very least slightly more known), instead of the extremely obscure stuff from the late 70's & early 80's stuff they have put out recently!

Ah, good call. Could be unreleased stuff like Deathstalker or Barbarian Queen, or Collector's Editions of titles like Conan or Willow (just examples, don't jump on me because they're held by studio X)

Also: The Beastmaster, Hawk the Slayer etc. Plenty of possibilities.

Warner still have Dragonslayer in their Paramount deal, I think. Would love to see it get proper SE treatment on Blu-ray though and Warner just seem to be sitting on it (along with many others from the Paramount catalogue they have access to).

Have Shout/Scream ever released a Paramount title?

Sorry, Rickah.

SF just posted the following on FB: We already see some guessing games going on so this is the only hint we'll drop: No sword-and-sorcery films planned at this time in the brand. But good to know you guys are open to them

so is this when dsman comes in and mentions the godzilla movies that arent out yet? because that would be very left field for SF to do...

Ok, one more guess from me, then I'll shut my mouth: The Golden Child. It's been awhile since they shot that one down
