Another review posted on DVDTalk. This raves not only about the new footage and its impact on the overall film, but also the look of the 4K restoration on the previously released footage.

From the review at DVDTalk:
"...the restoration pulls down some of the colors and showcases a presentation that focuses more on the grays, which is closer to Leone's intention." This is far from being true. Tonino Delli Colli: "We used a little Rn, a special bath patented by Technicolor Italiana, which made the blacks more velvety, added brilliance to everything and reinforced the contrasts." [Oreste de Fornari Sergio Leone: The Great Italian Dream Of Legendary America, originally published in Italian as Tutti i film di Sergio Leone] Sergio Leone: "RN is a well-known Technicolor process that's a little more expensive but can help you obtain much deeper blacks and much more luminous whites." [Interview between Sergio Leone and Jean A Gili originally published in Positif Magazine No. 280 dated June 1984. Repeated in Jean A Gili's book Italian Filmmakers published in 1998.] |

Anyway, very sad to hear the news, but I'm still waiting for a direct comparison between the releases, then I'll decide what to do... |

Definitely. I've got the BD in-hand.
I'm not able to post pics at this time, but it does look like the mockup. In addition to the digital code sheet it also comes with a small sheet that has a couple "before/after" pics, briefly, mentioning the restoration process. |

Ok after reading through RAH's post I can see that most people seem to agree that the theatrical cut in this new set is the old transfer. If that's true, it makes me wonder why Warner didn't use this new scan for the theatrical cut.

I haven't seen that version of the film so I would like to. While it appears I offended your taste, I'd also like to see the TV Godfather in chronological order, the TV cut of Halloween, and on and on. I enjoy seeing films from different aspects, good or bad. I'd love to own again Star Wars Theatrical, the 97 SE and the later revisions with the new Anakin ghost at the end.
Simply because, if its out there, I'd like to see it. |
