I believe the Deer clue was All that Heaven Allows no? not sure if there is some other source that mentions Deer Hunter as a possibility.

I was browsing through my Film textbook for school just now and I found "The Criterion Collection" in the glossary. The passage states that "adding commentaries and other extras to a film had been pioneered in 1984 by the Criterion Collection in their high-end laserdiscs."

Pretty cool if you ask me.

Still got my fingers crossed for a Faith Trilogy blu-ray upgrade. Apart from that, I would love another Chaplin (The Circus or Limelight), A Matter of Life and Death (have we confirmed that Criterion has the rights?), Don't Look Now, and an blu-ray upgrade for Night and the City.

Mulholland Drive would also be excellent, but I have a feeling we might be waiting on that one for some time, given the precedence set by the Eraserhead release. I would love to be wrong though...

Why do you think there'll be an upgrade of the trilogy? There's been no comment from anybody to indicate that they're being restored whereas the War trilogy was announced at least year's Wexner's event as being under restoration!

Back in June or July an HD version of Through a Glass Darkly was put up on iTunes, along with an HD version of The Virgin Spring, both of which were not available previously. It's probably more wishful thinking than anything at this point, but I have to assume if they've taken a look at Darkly similar treatment may have been/is being done to Winter Light and The Silence. Plus, along with Scenes from a Marriage the Trilogy and The Virgin Spring are the most important Bergman films yet to be released on blu-ray. I'd be very surprised if we don't get at least one of these three next year.

Hopeful for Virgin Spring. It's the only backlist Criterion title I never bought because I want to wait for the Blu-Ray. The only other one I waited on was Picnic at Hanging Rock, and it was worth the wait.

That seems like a lot for January. I've noticed January is usually about the same load as December, and then February has a bunch.

Though last January's 4 new titles kind of put a wrench in that observation from the previous years.

Beaver review for The Complete Jacques Tati blu-ray

It is very disappointing that Criterion did not use the same transfer for the 1995 full color version of Jour de Fete and the 1953 version of Monsieur Hulot's Holiday as the BFI release. It is noticeably inferior.

They do seem to look inferior, but are those the preferred versions of those films? i don't know much about Tati filmography, the other versions seem to look the same.

The others on the set seem to look a bit better than BFI, but look slightly greenish.

Jour de Fetewas shot simultaneously with two cameras in both b&w and an early color process called Thomson-color. The color version was never processed and released because firm behind the process went bankrupt soon after. It was said that Tati was never really satisfied with the b&w version. It was only until 1995, after Tati passed away, when new technology allowed the color version of Jour de Fete to be restored and released. I don't think Tati ever got a chance to see the full color version as he originally intended.

The 1953 version of Monsieur Hulot's Holiday was the original release version of the film. Throughout his life, Tati had a habit of continually tinkering with his old films. He would take out old sequences while shooting and adding in new sequences to his film. That was very much the case with Monsieur Hulot's Holiday.

I do not really want black and white movies since I grew up in the late 80's.

Here are the ones that I own that I like:

The Thin Red Line
Traffic
Scanners
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

and I just blind bought "Seven Samurai."


I'm probably most open to stuff from the 60's to today.

If you can think of any I am missing, please let me know. I'm trying to get my collection up and there are so much out there!!

Also, if there are some most own black and white ones, I might consider them. I saw the Uninvited on sale recently. Is it any good?

Hey guys. Whats the deal with the new greenish look on the new PlayTime from the box set? The old one was more grey, and I think it looked swell. Whats the "right" look?

Also, if you don't watch B&W movies you're missing so much!
Basically the whole film-noir genre!
(By the way, an essential B&W movie I would suggest is Schindler's List. Not Criterion)

As to what I'm looking for in the new releases, I'll just repeat what I say every month:

Mulholland Drive

There are others I'd like to see, like Blue is the Warmest Color and as was mentioned some more Bergman. But honestly, when it comes right down to it, I want Mulholland Drive more than I want everything else combined.

Well, that's not quite true. I really want a BD release of Last Year at Marienbad, but even if that does eventually happen, it's definitely not going to be this January.

All excellent choices. Of the Tarkovsky films I've only seen Andrei Rublev, I think. But I have faith in his work. The other ones are really good films, except for The New World IMO. It's not that I don't like it, but I don't think it's Malick's strongest work.

I'd be ALL OVER either Dancer in the Dark or Dogville. But I've sort of given up hope on Dogville.
