+1 I adore that film.
I'd love to see The Banishment in the collection as well. I don't think that had a release in the US on dvd?

New director approved edition with Kubricks original cut of the film :P?

It has not. I've been wanting to see the film; it played at an arthouse theater by me a few years ago but I didn't get to go see it.

They've exhumed and re-animated him to supervise. Criterion really does go all out!

You have great taste!

I really need to edit my signature, as about a half dozen of the films have gotten announced. Just saw that Jean de Florette and Manon of the Spring is getting a Jan release. Great news. I thought Criterion may have released it, but I'll still take it.

all that consists of is unedited sex... from what I understand "Kubrick's cut" really doesn't exist as he was not done obsessing (no disrespect to SK by using this word)

Wasn't their rumours that he submitted a completely different film and the studio edited it when he died? I know there is a lot of conspiracy theories behind his death and this film - which is kinda fun I guess lol

I'm not criticizing Jean de Florette at all, don't get me wrong, but I'll be buying that for Manon of the Spring. Such a powerful, awesome film.

It's been so many years since I've seen either. Really looking forward to that package.

Woot! My flash sale order came in today.

I also received a $10 gift certificate through my e-mail, so I am assuming that my replacement disc of Eraserhead is out in the mail. I'm 3 points away from a $50 gift certificate, as well, so this is looking promising in terms of future purchases.

Definitely! I really like each, as both are different. I might like Jean better, but it only works with the payoff of Manon.

Unless they are going to have great special features like the house arrest short film, I'm pretty content with the current Canadian blu.

Let's face it: When it all comes down to it, we're all just happy that they're releasing it!

Haven't seen Manon, but I loved Jean de Florette.
I'm not sure how the 2nd is gonna be without Depardieu. I love his earlier works (80s-90s)

Sorry that the thread has been detailed a bit by a non-Criterion.

I can't believe you only saw Jean! They've been on TV a couple times in the past year back to back. While separate films, they really both have to be seen to complete the story. It'd be like reading half of a novel!

Before he went insane, you mean?

See, now, on a different subject I'm in this situation. Band of Outsiders is $25 at Amazon, but $32 at Criterion. If I get it from Criterion, I'm gaining points, though I'm SO far away since I just joined. But if I get it from Amazon, it's $7 cheaper. Same with Weekend.

Arg.

And I will then have all the Criterion Blus of Godard, except for Pierrot le Fou, which is OOP and costs about $100.

I have decided that I will go on ahead with my Blu-ray purchase of The Vanishing. I truly cannot stop thinking about it.

It seems like a film that I will enjoy more and more on each subsequent watch. As I've already said, I think the themes explored involving
[Show spoiler]the golden eggs
are disturbing. Furthermore, I can see an appreciation growing in terms of
[Show spoiler]how far obsession can take people.

There is nothing to be lost as the Blu-ray quality is an unbelievable improvement over the DVD and Hulu versions.
