Not saying they are bad, just more prone to taking me out of the visual experience than CGI. Maybe Episode VII will change that for me? |

I generally agree with the "it's not the tool, it's how you use it" thinking. There are examples of practical effects that look stunning and very believable, and likewise there are examples of CGI you would never suspect were CGI if you didn't know.
I think both the OT and PT have their moments of "this looks obviously fake", like any movie that relies heavily on special effects will have, but when I watch them I don't think about that stuff, I'm just sucked into the story and, like mrr1 said, I respect and appreciate the effort that went into it all even when it isn't 100% convincing. On this subject, I think the sequel trilogy has the potential to look the best of all of them so far. It seems like they're going for a perfect balance between the techniques used in the OT and PT which, combined with them having the latest in technology at their disposal, should provide stunning results. |

It's obvious when it's a spaceship or an alien because you know those things don't exist. But when it's buildings, trees, lakes, street signs or anything that you can see everyday and just assume they shot it with a camera, you're seeing but not noticing a lot of CGI. Check out Argo, or better yet Gone Baby Gone, if you don't believe me. ![]() |

Warwick Davis, who played Wicket in "Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi" and also appeared in "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace," will show up in "Star Wars: Episode VII." The official "Star Wars" YouTube page released a cute video of Davis to announce his return to the franchise, though what role he'll play remains undisclosed.

If it was "just changing dialogue" I would agree with you, but they intentionally shot it with misleading dialogue to keep spoilers from leaking. They shot the scene as Darth Vader revealing that Obi Wan killed Luke's father. That's a fake scene until the dialogue was replaced.

If you go back to my earlier post about this scene you'll see that I mentioned that Hamill was in on it. But back to the original point, it's not unheard of that they'd shoot scenes in a misleading way to keep spoilers from leaking.

a) because it shouldn't have been made to begin with (make a movie first - we'll come up with an idea later)
b) because of the director (I just don't trust his filmmaking decisions) c) from the bits of rumours we've heard so far, they're bringing back way too many characters. d) I do not want to see Palpatine back; I do not want to see Luke turning to the dark side, which is one of the stupidest ideas out there (the floating hand is another one). e) The original story has finished. Couldn't they find something else? start with something fresh? it's a large galaxy, you know.. f) because of the other movies that'll follow: Obi-Wan trilogy? a Han Solo movie...really? who cares?? I was perfectly fine not knowing what they did for 20+ years. It was all part of the mystique of the OT. Next thing you know, they'll be making a C3P0/R2D2 'road trip' movie. |

![]() Besides, it's not like if the movie flops, they'll decide not to make anymore and the rights will return to their rightful owner, where things will improve. It would only make the SWU worse. |
