Have fun. I know I enjoyed it.

I just like this journey of Bilbo...flaws and all.

I heard that the whole scene with the dwarves meeting Thranduil has been removed from the EE. Is this true?

The new additions really improved the film for me. The introduction to Beorn is wonderful, and the Thrain arc is powerfully done. I just wish they hadn't done one thing:

[Show spoiler]The Wilhelm Scream as Thrain gets sucked into the void. Just why? It undermines a very emotional scene, and does a great disservice to Sher's superb performance, and indeed the character. Completely unnecessary and impossible to fathom

Everything else is great. This just bugged me a lot.

I might get this, but I'm not sure yet, I might just wait until the complete set comes out.

Agreed on the spoiler. Sadly, I have to say it zapped a lot of my enthusiasm out of my viewing. I don't know what Peter was thinking.

No. It's a deleted scene in the appendices.

AGREED. Especially since it was used earlier in Laketown in a similar way.

If it helps, the digital copy that comes with the BD will be UV only, so it wouldn't be like buying another iTunes copy.

Extended edition does improve over the theatrical release. Like "An Unexpected Journey," "Desolation" follows suit by stacking the majority of its new content in the first 90 minutes.

[Show spoiler]Prancing Pony:
Turns into a flashback within a flashback with more info on Thrain at the Battle of Azanulbizar. Also sets up Thrain's appearance and importance during Dol Guldur.

Beorn:
More fleshed out in the EE. The EE hammers home he doesn't like dwarves before he says it when they have their meal. Still want to know where the Beorn being tortured in Dol Guldur flashback comes into play, because there was a LEGO about it.

Mirkwood:
Not rushed like the theatical cut. Enchanted River and White Stag are highlights here.

Laketown:
A few minor additions here. More sneaking around to get to Bard's house. The Master and Alfrid turn away a sick Kili before they go seek Bard for help. Makes more sense now that "no one will help them."

Dol Guldur:
Addition of Thrain to Dol Guldur is what everyone's been saying, the highlight of the EE. Brings the new content full circle.

[Show spoiler]When Sauron grabs Thrain, that scream of Thrain was so cheap. I heard that scream sound before. They also used a scream sound from The Two Towers. Not a fan of those standard sound effects. Like cars, horn in more movies etc etc. It's so cheap Anno 2014. Just go back into the studio and record some new sound effects.

That's the Wilhelm Scream. It's all the more bizarre considering you can hear Sher's actual scream as well. Almost makes me think it was some kind of joke/mess-up that nobody bothered to correct!

They've been using that sound effect for DECADES. It's an inside joke on most movies now. Lucas' STAR WARS really made it famous.

I have not seen the film yet, but was it the Wilhelm scream?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_scream

If so, yeah it's definitely a chance for directors to insert a little running joke into the film.

Yes.

I don't have any issues with the scream when used in a appropriate fashion
[Show spoiler](humorous death of henchman #2, etc.). But for an important character, during an emotionally charged scene -
it's a serious miscalculation on PJ's part to say the least.

The Star Wars films are the only ones I don't mind hearing that scream in. When I hear it in any other movie, it's just annoying.

I am not into those details. Thanks for the Wiki-page.

I agree with: "Aragorn the Elfstone" knowing the backstory now.
