Default Worst blu-ray movies - PQ/SQ

Hello,

I have owned the PS3 and a 61" JVC 1080p tv for over 4 months now. I have a number of BR dvd's and some are very impressive while others just make me say "WTF?". A good BR to buy is Blazing Saddles, even though it was filmed in 1974 it is one of the better remasterings that I have seen. It was the first DVD I ever bought and the first BR. CRAP that I own in BR is Fifth Element ( I know they are remastering it) and Tears of the Sun. Stay away from thoughs. I am very very impressed with the PS3 now with it's new firmware update I can now upscale my regular DVD's to 1080P.

Anyone have any advice of other BR DVD's to stay away from because of the crappy remastering?

Uh...you're definitely in a small minority when it comes to referring to Tears of the Sun as "crap."

I was fairly unimpressed with parts of American Psycho. Most of it was ok, but there are some parts where the MPEG-2 compression is quite noticeable.
Still a good movie.

That's odd, they listed Scanner Darkly as tier 0. I thought some of the unbiased reviewers saw compression artifacts and other small issues on this one. I'm also surprised POT2 was listed above POTC1 as I thought the first had a higher bitrate and better PQ.

'Lady in the Water' is nothing special in terms of picture quality.

Yeah, that and just about every other low bitrate VC-1 encoded rubbish transfer ported over from HD DVD that Warner has to offer - Superman Returns anyone?

I don't know if I can respect the opinion of those who can't use the english language properly.

Default Hmmm...

What I was trying to get across was that the actual picture quality of 5th element and Tears of the sun were crappy. I have both DVD and BR version of tears and honestly it was hard to tell the differance. I get better quality just upscaling the dvd with the PS3 than I do with the BR. Don't lie to yourself, we are getting short changed on alot of these BR dvd's. Half of the BR I own it is just grain grain grain grain. Sorry, but grain does not equal HD. Young Guns is another bad BR. Good BR's are Blazing Saddles, Ice Age the Meltdown, Rocky Balboa, Flyboys, and most of Planet Earth. I am talking just on quality of the picture, not of the movie.

There is something drastically wrong with your setup, that's all that can be said.

Sorry, your concept of what "HD" is, is different than mine.

Probably fettastic's tier system is more similar to yours.

Now, I do agree that Blazing Saddles (25+ Mb/s VC-1) looks good.
I don't think T5E looks as bad as you say compared to 35mm showings (except for the title sequence which looks like a dupe). Also remember that BS' negative has 60% more area than TFE's.

Well, to tell you the truth I am not an expert and don't know all the jargon and what all the "(25+ Mb/s VC-1)" really is. I do know what I see, and some of the BR's I own are inferior to what I was really expecting to get. There are alot of great BR's and I am a BR fan all the way. But I don't want to be buying products that look like someone just threw them into a cheap dvd upscaler recorded them onto a bluray DVD, then put 1080p on the cover to get me to buy it. My system that I am using is:

PS3 V1.08
JVC 61" 61FN97 1080P/w HDMI V1.3
JVC RX-D412 RECIEVER (I have my PS3 hooked up directly to the TV via HDMI and the PS3 hooked up to my reciever via digital optical)

It most certainly doesn't. I think it looks good for what it is. I will be getting the remastered version and setting up a nice a/b comparision to see the differences in the encode. I'm interested to see if the print is cleaned up a bit and see how AVC stacks up against the previous MPEG2 encode. I'm sure Sony is giving this title lots of TLC after the scrutiny that the first one recieved.

Do we know that it's going to be an AVC encode?

If you like TFE that is fine, but I know everyone has at least one BR that they think could have been done better. If you know of a bad BR DVD that we should stay away from, post it here. I own 23 BR's and most have great PQ but there are a few that I think I wasted my money on. Am I the only one that thinks that some BR dvd's are just not worthy of the name and format of bluray????

Remember, we are judging on PQ not the movie.
