If so, yeah it's definitely a chance for directors to insert a little running joke into the film.

I knew I should've skimmed past this!
Not a big deal, as I was waiting for the EE to watch the film.

Talk about a miscalculation. Ack! I'm so very sorry about that. I've spoilered that bit now. Can you edit your quotation of my post please?

I'm usually better than that.

Not a problem, Aragorn! I'll edit my post too!
Although I'm probably the only who has not seen this film yet!

Well that's disappointing. Thankfully everything else sounds amazing.

I *hate* the Wilhelm scream. It's not an in-joke anymore...it's a wetwilly. Get that out of my ears, stop distracting me from the movie. UGH.

This forever.

The film is cartoon enough without this gag.

My thoughts exactly. The only place I remotely tolerate it is star wars. It has no place in the Dol Guldor scene in DOS. For that matter it has no place in Middle Earth period.

I really didn't find the use of the 'Wilhelm' that jarring. Maybe I was expecting it to suck more because so many people here and over at TORn hated it so much that you lowered my expectations of the whole sequence haha.

What I really hate is that this extended cut was released digitally 2 weeks before physically being available. I'm sure there are others out there like me who have no self control and hate themselves while they read all the spoilers and watch all the leaked clips.

Has Hobbit: The Unexpected Journey or Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug been released in an Extended 3D auditions, or are the extended auditions 2D only.

The Desolation of Smaug Extended Edition Scene Guide from TheOneRing.net

On another note, y'all complaining about the Wilhelm scream must have missed it slipped into the Helms Deep battle from The Two Towers...

The Extended 'Editions' are available in both 2D and 3D.

Which was a completely different situation. The Wilhelm scream over the death of a nobody elf is one thing. It being over the death of a major character in a powerful scene when the actor's actual scream was far more appropriate is a whole other thing. It's about knowing when and where to use certain things. It's about common sense.

I really don't know how Jackson looked at that scene and thought..."you know what this needs? A goofy over the top Wilhelm scream to pull the audience out of the moment. Yep, that's exactly what this scene needs."

The Wilhelm needs to disappear, but at least most directors have good sense of when it is appropriate.

I was watching this on Cinemanow (they finally have a app on Roku) and the picture was filling up the whole screen.. What is the aspect ratio to this? And is the image being cut?

It's OAR is 2:35.1 so if it was filling a 16:9 screen its being cropped or stretched.

Yeah, that's wrong. It should be in scope (2:35.1).

Everything you said.

It's just such a shame. I love all the additions to the EE, but that scream just trivializes all the drama built up by the Thrain additions.

Honestly, the whole thing seems some kind of joke that is being played on us - like an April Fools or something. If only.

Why was it removed? Does an extended scene make the scene redundant or something?
