Tad off topic but Film4 is showing The Tree of Life tonight

Bit horrified by the description on their website:

Quote:
Malick's film has its moments and certainly creates an impression visually, but you could say the same thing about Transformers: Dark Of The Moon. Despite its problems, and our resevations, we'd recommend those who are serious about cinema should see, and discuss, this film.
Are they comparing The Tree of Life's visuals to Transformers LOL?

As did I. I thought the response by many was one of great paranoia and fear-mongering. Cooler heads seemed to ultimately prevail, however, and I appreciate the help of some of those individuals.

His films will probably most likely be appreciated a lot more after he dies, but for now enjoy it while you can.
I've never been able to get into his films. I think he's very creative but I've just never liked his films.

Right, you saw Johnny Criterion Collector spinning conspiracy yarns.

Unfortunately JCC was pretty much spot on.

I don't really like him either. I enjoy 12 Monkeys, but that is about it.

I'm sorry your feelings got hurt because your copy of M won't play, but how about just agreeing to disagree? As has been stated by many others here, the thing got blown way out of proportion. 82 pages of discussion on the topic is pretty good evidence to that fact.

What would be an appropriate number of pages in which to discuss a variety of faulty or potentially faulty discs from a variety of labels?

Or let me put it this way...in what specific ways would a reasonable discussion that wasn't blown way out of proportion have differed from what we see in that thread?

Oooh, Terry Gilliam discussion! Let's all talk about him, rather than bronzegate!

I and my mother went to see Parnassus in theatres, and it is visually stunning, but it's definitely my least favourite out of all his films I've viddied. She hated it. I began to appreciate it more on repeat viewings, but you can definitely see Ledger was having issues. It's a bad thing when Colin Farrell can out act you, because at the time, Colin Farrell wasn't that great of an actor. He's improved.

I'd personally would like to see Jabberwocky in the collection, and not as a supplement.

And yes, I did actually like The Brothers Grimm, which is probably his most accessable film. Peter Stormare makes the film for me.

Leviathan is a satire? Doesn't look like it from the trailer.

CANNES, France - Amid unrest in eastern Ukraine and a return to Cold War-like politics, a powerful satire that depicts local corruption in Vladimir Putin's Russia has stormed the Cannes Film Festival.
Make sense :P? Also doesn't it have a relation The Book of Jobs?

Quote:
Andrei Zvyagintsev's Leviathan is a sober and compelling tragic drama of corruption and intimidation in contemporary Russia, set in a desolate widescreen panorama. This is a movie which seems to be influenced by the Old Testament and Elia Kazan; it starts off looking like a reasonably scaled drama about a little guy taking on big government. Then it escalates to a new plane in which man is taking on the biggest, most cruel and implacable government of all, and the final sequence of devastation must surely be influenced by the final moments of Tarkovsky's The Sacrifice.

There's just the one Job, unless you mean the book about the Apple guy.

I also note that Alex Ross Perry was in the Criterion cupboard recently (the video was released today). I hope this means that his films will be getting the Criterion treatment (tho at this stage I'd be happy to see them get *any* treatment at all in HD). I saw his most recent film, Listen Up Philip just last week and it impressed me greatly. After Adieu au langage and P'tit Quinquin it's probably my favourite film of the year.

Just re watched the trailer and the special effects look sooooo dated lol - I did get the excitement from watching the trailer, like I did originally - I think it is one of those films where the trailer is better than the film >.<

When I get around to watching I will let you know but I am in no rush - his older films are far superior.
Really? Maybe the special effects weren't top notch such as from ILM but I still think there were some visually stunning sequences especially the one with that pyramid in the desert separating Mr. Nick's "one night stand" motel. It looked like a surrealist painting.

Lily Cole wasn't that great I agree...but I thought Tom Waits was really good and he's more known as a musician than actor. I still think his role in Down by Law is my favorite though still.

It's too bad a majority of the people here detest or dislike Terry Gilliam's work. Maybe he'll get more respect when he's gone like I wrote earlier.

I wonder if it will qualify for the 50% off Criterion sale.

If anything he'll be less appreciated over time because his films lack intellectual or emotional depth. They are surface level.

Leviathan looks insanely good. I've had my eye on that one for awhile. Would love a Criterion distribution ala Revanche. Matter of fact those 2 sound like a great double feature. Unfortunately I live nowhere near an art house theater so I will have to wait for the eventual release on Blu.
