Apparently you stopped reading after I used the word "safe". Safe as in it's what casual horror fans expect. It's guaranteed to get people talking. Your inability to look past the fact that you consider the alternate take "cute" shows that you clearly are representative of who I was referring to. The average horror fan wants a turn your brain off at the door gory flick. Walking down the stairs upside down and backwards with a mouth full of blood... that certainly fits the bill.

I certainly enjoy those types of films... (they're probably my favorite in all honesty), but in this case the psychological aspect of the alternate cut actually is far more realistic and thus one could argue, creepier when you really think about it. It's no where near as shocking or memorable during a first time viewing, but it's effect lasts even longer, and causes the viewer to contemplate just what is going on with her behavior. Even more so, at that junction in the film, it makes little sense to have Regan this demonic and out roaming the house. The alternate cut fits much better with where her mental state was and her behavior as a whole at this point in the film.

I fully understand why they chose the mouth full of blood walk scene to include in the film. I do think it was the correct version to put in as the most number of people will enjoy it. However as a whole I think the alternate cut actually works better, though it undoubtedly would have have far more people similar to yourself failing to appreciate it's simplicity and instead labeling it "cute.

Linda Blair have starred in a few TV movies in the early 70s: Born Innocent, Sweet Hostage, and Sarah T. Portrait of a Teenage Alcoholic just to name a few, as the leading actress. All three movies were pretty good.

In the first part of Born Innocent, Linda Blair was sexually assaulted with a broomstick in a female correctional facility. That was the scene Kathy Griffin (whoever she is) was referring to in the movie!

Wow. You have never heard of Kathy Griffin? Consider yourself lucky, cause once it is seen...it can't be undone.

Linda Blair got caught up in a drug case which severely damaged her career pretty much right after The Exorcist. Back then, that kind of attention wasn't "cool" like it is now. That shit made her career sink faster than the Titanic!!! She was a good actress even as a child. Its a shame what happened to her, she could have been an A lister!

Except that that scene wasn't in the version that won the Academy Award for best sound

I really don't like the spider-walk scene at all. Like most of the additions to the extended cut, it just gets in the way and actually makes the film sillier than it needs to be. Another example is during the psychiatrist scene, right before Regan grabs him by the balls. Her face morphs into the demon's, which makes no sense whatsoever.

I guess William Friedkin didn't like the Spider Walk scene either, which is why he edited it from the theatrical version.

The tongue flicking scene was silly. I'm glad it didn't make the cut.

Sorry Linda Blair fans, but she really wasn't much of an actress and she displayed all the charisma of a dead gerbil as an adult. That's why her career ended up in exploitation films which traded on her notoriety and fame from The Exorcist.

Natasha Lyonne, another troubled former child actress, suffered a far more embarrassing and public fall out in the wake of a drug scandal. She pulled her life together and now she is back where she was before. She's got lots of films lined up and has been getting rave reviews for the hit TV series she's in.

That's because she's a talented actress who shows some personality when a camera points at her.

I was happy with how the Exorcist III's transfer turned out. The film elements are in excellent condition and it appears to be a relatively fresh scan.

Good to hear. The screenshots look pretty solid to me and I'm hoping to pick this up by the end of the year at a discounted price.

Right, I agree. The reviews for all the sequels say digital noise but that's grain as grain can be. Digital noise is not tight and uniformed like grain is. Its more blocky and spread out like snow. E3 definitely looks like grain to me, not digital noise. Plus, the scan is not half bad. Pretty nice detail and color. Its certainly better than the 3 that it got for PQ IMO.

There is no digital noise in Exorcist III's film scan. Due to WB's anemic compression standards (the film only gets a BD-25), there are some very minor bits of gradient noise. It's a fairly authentic film experience. I have yet to see the other sequels in this set, which I hear do not fair quite as well.

Feel free to disagree, but please quote accurately what you're disagreeing with. The reviews of the sequels said "video noise" not "digital noise". The former refers generally to "noise generated by some aspect of the video process". Your reference to "blocky and spread out like snow" sounds like macroblocking, which doesn't appear on this title or I would have said so.

Re: your statement below that "noise is noise". That an obvious truism, but it doesn't change the fact that not all noise is "blocky and spread out like snow". If that's your definition of "noise", then of course there's no noise in "Exorcist III". But then you've redefined "noise" in a way that no one else uses and that renders the term useless.

Please see above. The other sequel is worse. The prequels are somewhat better.

Um, noise is noise for one. What I meant by blocky and spread out like snow is the scene in The Exorcist when Karras is in his mother's apartment. That's video noise. That's not what's going on in The Exorcist 3.
