So I have the opportunity to see this in 15/70 IMAX here in Seattle but after a short talk with my normal movie cohorts we may skip it and go somewhere else. The last movie we saw in 15/70 IMAX was The Dark Knight Rises and all of us were in firm agreement that the contrast (or black levels) were extremely poor. This gave the image a washed out look in any of the darker moments. Since Interstellar looks to be a space movie I imagine there is a lot of content that will be on the darker side and I don't know if I will be blown away enough by the native IMAX footage to forgive the horrible contrast performance again. I can't even imagine seeing this in 35mm as the last few 35mm presentations I went to were horrible (I think these only look good in spiffy Hollywood area theaters that get good prints and have well kept projectors). So it will probably be 4K digital for us. If I like the movie enough I may go see it in 15/70 if I have some time just to see how it compares though. I'm actually surprised that the Cinerama in Seattle isn't showing it in 70mm. I saw The Master there in 70mm opening weekend and it looked fantastic aside from some obvious stuttering in pans. But they are undergoing some huge renovation and I know they are installing a new 4K laser projector so it is unclear when they are going to be open for business again and what they'll be showing at that time.

I think that modern digital cinema projectors aren't generally all that great with blacks either, though I didn't notice any particular problems with TDKR on 15/70 at the BFI IMAX in London.
It's ironic really, people worship at the altar of self-emissive display technology because of the ultra-black blacks, but most cinema screenings - which is the paradigm that we're trying to emulate in this hobby, no? - don't even match up to that sort of performance. Quote:

I'm heading 1h30m to Toronto on Friday night next week to see it in the closest 15-perf/70mm to me (Niagara Falls has one but they only show Voyage Over The Falls). Seats reserved over a week ago, dead centre about 60% up. |

This is nothing new or surprising. It has been known for months that plasmas were going away. Hey, everyone doesn't know quality when they see it right? Whatever. The kuro will continue to satisfy me. About to unlock the ISF modes. So i'm good. |

The only caveat I would add is that for folks to see the celluloid versions first, or at least, soon, so as to view a fresh print (an opportunity which in itself is quite rare for theatergoers), and also try to pick a theater that has previously demonstrated some fairly recent past expertise with film projection; otherwise, you pays your money and yous take your chances ![]() As we get a little closer to the release date, I’ll post the total file size of the 4K DCP version in order to give folks an idea as to whether or not the encoder was sufficiently generous with the bitrate, like with that of a past DCP arising from film acquisition source, namely, Django Unchained (2012) - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...go#post7546015 Last edited by Penton-Man; 10-28-2014 at 09:17 PM. Bloody hell, that's a chunky file size for Django although it is a long film, at that. Even though Interstellar is a similar length I don't think it'll get as much love, so I'm betting it'll be between 225-250GB. That said, Dark Knight Rises was 302GB so they'd be selling Interstellar short if it was anything less...

Which reminds me.....during the movie one of the right wall lights came on. I don't know which genius did that but for like a half hour the picture was ruined. It seemed nobody was bothered by it except me. Not surprised given the current state of video displays. |
