We used to have a young Methodist minister who loved the original Star Wars films and sometimes would work references to them into his sermons...."Just as Luke and the two robots searched for..so also did the three wise men seeking out......." Needless to say- the kids loved it, their parents smiled, and the older members just looked at one another confused.

For me, it's between the Demy box and Persona for release of the year. Of course, Persona is at a disadvantage since it's just a single film. But it's pretty amazing itself.
I'm at a tie between La Dolce Vita and Persona in terms of restoration. I don't think they could ever look as well as they do now.

I had 'Purple Noon' in my Amazon cart, rotting there for a sale to happen. It was removed, as being no longer available for sale by Amazon. It doesn't show as being on backorder. Did this go OOP?

It's probably just out of stock. The website does not list it as out of print.

For now, the Jacques Demy box set is the one to beat in terms of Criterion for me. Overall though, it's not even a competition that Mondo Vision's Possession release is the best release of the year, to the point it's not even a fair fight.

Watching/listening to The Umbrellas of Cherbourg right now. I've seen this film more times than I wish to remember. I think it is one of the most beautiful films ever made, and Criterion did an amazing job with the box set.

Criterion has had some great releases this year, it is hard for me to pick the best one, but some of my personal favorites would be:

Red River
My Darling Clementine
A Hard Day's Night
Eraserhead (second pressing disc)
Jacques Demy box-set

Right now, it would be a tie between Red River and the Jacques Demy box-set if I really had to pick a first place winner.

Note: I am basing my selections in terms of film quality (based on my personal taste), restoration work done to film(s), and special features (very important to me).

But, seriously though, I could easily add ten+ more films to that list.

Is anyone here going to purchase the upcoming Hellman release? I haven't seen those westerns, but I am considering taking a risk on them at the next B+N sale.

A mini review...

I just finished watching my Criterion edition of Tokyo Story. I enjoyed this movie for its humility and values. What a beautiful story... and I had this uncanny feeling at times of feeling "boxed in" or claustrophobic from the "cubist"esque set design as I was grasping for oxygen (no wonder the cover art evokes that "box" theme). I can see how Hirokazu Koreeda's Still Walking was directly influenced and inspired by this film. I can't think of any more appropriate double feature than both of these films back to back with Tokyo Story being watched first.

I feel like this is an essential film to watch and probably to own as well.

On that note though, and sorry if someone already mentioned this, but Vampry is now OOP. Still on Hulu though.

Edit: Oh and there it is. Just had to go back a couple extra pages. I should have known this thread would be up with it.

I would be interested in hearing from Criterion why they're switched to leaflets rather than booklets. Most disappointing.

Ive already emailed and asked but not had reply yet, pretty sure their emails are full from the disc issues - hopefully hear something soon.

Its really making me less excited about the releases as Criterion is about the entire package and I love reading the books and looking at the extra content. They've released some incredible film everyone been waiting for which is great but they ruin it with some cheap leaflet :/

Has Criterion ever thought about possibly releasing a Marx Brothers movie? Specifically, Duck Soup? I'd be all over that!

I think they were asked about A Night at the Opera and replied: We wish!

I'd be all over a Marx Brothers blu-ray set from anyone at this point.

I'd like to purchase these Hellman westerns next month, simply based on the strength of Two-Lane Blacktop, which I've always loved.

More directly you could pair it with Yoji Yamada's Tokyo Family (which gets pretty mixed reactions, though I quite enjoy it).

Have you seen Late Spring?
