The Omen (1976)* 1/2
I wasn't exactly blown away by The Omen, but I did still enjoy it. I like the whole story set-up, but the movie does seem to drag a little bit in some parts. However, I liked all the subtle stuff that happens to point towards Damien being the Antichrist and I really liked Gregory Peck in the leading role.

"Oh, the horror!" so far this year:

[Show spoiler]09/22/14

The Raven* 1/2
Not really a scary movie, but does have some horror elements. I liked the concept of the movie, but the plot just seems really convoluted and nothing is really all that exciting. On top of that, I wasn't really impressed with John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe.

09/24/14

Wolf Creek* 1/2
Wasn't sure how I was going to like this one when I sat down today to watch it, but I really did enjoy it. It does a move a little slow in the beginning and I'm sure that was done deliberately to introduce and get me to like the characters. However, I really didn't have any feelings for the characters throughout. I thought, too, that there wasn't going to be a whole lot of time for the characters running from the killer, but the filmmakers did a good job giving the right amount of time to it. Plus those scenes were truly chilling and heart-pounding. This was all also helped out by the fact that John Jarrett gave a great performance as the killer.

Slither*
I enjoyed this one a whole lot more than I thought I would. Slither combined the perfect combination of humor/dark humor, scariness and creepiness and gross-out moments. I just wish there had been more interactions between the surviving characters and the alien monsters. And the concept, too, does run kind of thin nearing the end of the movie. I can say, however, that I had a good time watching this one.

09/28/14

The Hitcher (2007)* 1/2
Haven't seen the original The Hitcher, but I liked this one. I thought it was quite entertaining and really liked the cat-and-mouse scenes throughout the movie. I wish there would have been more Sean Bean, though, as I really thought he did with the character John Ryder. And I wish the movie would have been at least a little bit longer to let some of the scenes play out more.

09/29/14

Afflicted* 1/2
Rented this one from the Redbox and was really disappointed. I liked the way that the movie was filmed looking like how it would if 2 guys were putting together a web show. I also liked the part of the movie where
[Show spoiler]Derek slaughters the S.W.A.T. team
. However, the movie just isn't very exciting at all and loses some it's luster
[Show spoiler]after Clif dies
.

09/30/14

The Quiet Ones* 1/2
Really was disappointed in this one. The story wasn't all that engaging and I found the movie to be quite boring and it felt like it dragged on forever. There were some good scenes, though, mainly involving some of the supernatural events surrounding Jane. Plus, I did like how they mixed in some views from the filming cameraman in.

13 Sins* 1/2
Not a horror movie per say (even though it was under the horror section in the Redbox), but more of a thriller. Whichever way, I found 13 Sins to be quite entertaining and thought-provoking. Definitely had me on the edge of my seat at some points.

10/1/14

Mother's Day (2010)* 1/2
I have never seen the original of this one either, but this movie really surprised me. All the characters that played the demented "family" did a fantastic job, especially Rebecca De Mornay as Mother that is was truly terrifying. There was never really no telling which of the other characters were going to die. Plus I liked how the filmmakers made the characters not perfect in any way.

10/2/14

The Haunting in Connecticut* 1/2
The Haunting in Connecticut does do some things really good. The haunting parts of the movie are actually pretty creep and scary and there were actually a couple times I did jump. I also thought the family aspect of the movie was done pretty good as I honestly believed the family was having a hard time dealing with things. Where this one loses me, though, is all the sequences that focus on the why of the story. Those parts were just boring and I hate how the ending was done.

10/3/14

Paranormal Activity 1/2
May have lost some its luster after multiple viewings, but PA still remains one of my favorite horror movies. It's eerie, creepy and still pretty damn scary. My only real complaint, though, is that it took me awhile to notice this, but Micah comes off as a big douche in this movie. I don't know if the filmmakers wanted that to just show how frightened he is about all this stuff happening to him and Katie or if they made like that so he'd get his comeuppance. I'm just going to pretend it's the former.

10/4/14

The Hills Run Red*
I like how this one started. It sucked me into the story and engrossed me quite a bit up until the killer appeared. Then it kind of loses its luster by going into the slasher area. It isn't all that scary, but is kind of creepy and I can at least say that I was decently entertained.

10/5/14

Outpost: Black Sun* 1/2
I thought I picked up the first Outpost movie when I bought this one, but it turns out that this is the sequel. So, not having any kind of background, this movie was still alright. I liked the set-up for this one even though an undead army of whatevers has been done many times over. However, there wasn't as much soldiers against Nazi "zombies" as I had hoped, but the end sequences did have me on the edge of my seat for the most part.

10/6/14

Dead Silence* 1/2
A pretty entertaining movie to say the least. Definitely has that James Wan atmosphere which I like plus an interesting story that had me hooked. I just wish that they hadn't gone all CGI with Mary Shaw's ghost in the final act of the movie.

10/7/14

Child's Play* 1/2
This is the first time I've seen Child's Play all the way through. It's a creepy movie, but not particularly scary. Plus I liked how they went a different route with this slasher movie. Not the usual hulking bulk of man chasing down teenagers. It was cheesy at times and I did wish that it would have been a little bit longer so I could see some more interaction with Chucky.

10/8/14

The Last Broadcast*
I was sorely disappointed in this one. I heard some people say it was better than The Blair Witch Project (which I love), but I just did not like this one. It was really quite boring except for one part (
[Show spoiler]when they show Locus and Rein finding Steven's blood
) and I hated the ending because it didn't make a whole lot of sense.

10/9/14

The Thing (2011)
I really like this prequel. I think it pays good homage to John Carpenter's masterpiece by going a good job keeping people guessing who The Thing is. On top of that, it has some great scenes. My personal favorite being when
[Show spoiler]it's revealed that Edvard is the thing.
. My only real complaints are that the use of CGI kind of threw me off sometimes and the movie seems to rush through deaths nearing the end of the movie.

10/11/14

Scooby-Doo and the Witch's Ghost*
Wanted to go with something a little different tonight, so I went with this one after realizing that I hadn't watched it even though I bought it last year. This one definitely isn't my favorite of the animated Scooby-Doo movies, but it was still enjoyable. I really liked the atmosphere and setting for this one. Plus it had some pretty catchy music, plenty of Scooby-Doo charm and neat little twist that actually gone me off guard.

10/12/14

The Faculty
I really enjoy this movie no matter how many times I watch it. Sure it's goofy and cheesy at times, but to me, that's what makes it fun. It's also helped out by some good performances from all the leads and a still good (even to this day) twist.

10/13/14

The Thing (1982) 1/2
One of my all-time favorite horror movies. I really love the setting, the characters are likable and I just love how John Carpenter kept the suspense up throughout the whole movie. The movie does move kind of slow at points, but I guess that was a way to build up the tension. Plus, I just love the effects.

10/14/14

Creepshow 1/2
Certainly an enjoyable movie, but not really scary by today's standards. Very cheesy at some parts, especially the story featuring Stephen King (which is the only story I don't really like). I have to give props to Leslie Nielsen in this one as he was absolutely wonderful and probably my favorite thing throughout. However, the story The Crate is also good too.

10/15/14

Trick 'r Treat
As with most people, watching this has become a yearly tradition for me. It is such a good movie. It captures the Halloween atmosphere almost to perfection and all the segments range from really good to good. Plus I like how they all tie into each other some time throughout.

10/16/14

Friday the 13th (2009)
Not the greatest, but still really entertaining. I like how this one takes its inspiration from many of the previous Friday the 13th movies. Also this one has a ton of good kills and I like how Jason is portrayed in this one. Really upset that there was never a sequel.

Wolf Creek 2* 1/2
On par with the first one. I found the German couple more relatable in this movie to the 3 main characters in the first. Also, I like how they expanded on Mick's killings even though some of the killing seemed to be rushed. However, the last segment between Mick and Paul was very well done and had my heart pounding not knowing what was going to happen.

10/17/14

Freddy vs. Jason 1/2
I just have so much fun watching FvJ. Sure, it's highly cheesy and some of the dialogue is cringe-worthy, but it's just a good time. I like the story of how Freddy and Jason are brought together. There are a lot of great kills between the two in this one as well. Plus, it actually does a pretty good job between being funny, dark and actually quite scary.

10/18/14

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) 1/2
Starts off really well, but then turns into a rather dull movie. For a movie called The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, there's certainly not a lot of Leatherface. The kills aren't even special. The only scene I can think of that I really liked was when Leatherface was stalking Erin and Morgan in the abandoned house. It was at least, kind of, sort of, suspenseful.

10/19/14

Scream
Still a solid movie that I still love to view every once in awhile. It's highly funny at points and pretty scary at others. I admit, though, it is kind of cheesy at points too. But the movie is carried by some really good performances from Neve Campbell, Jamie Kennedy and Matthew Lilliard.

10/20/14

The Devil's Rejects*
Not necessarily a horror movie, I suppose, but I still popped this one in tonight as I hadn't seen it yet. Pretty decent to say the least. Not a whole lot story-wise, but I do like how the focus stays on the Firefly family almost throughout. The 3 leads definitely carry this movie a long ways. I just didn't really like how it ended.

10/21/14

Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Such a good zombie movie. I just love how it starts right from the beginning and never seems to let go except for the few moments when something happens to one of the characters. And this is helped by the fact that most of the characters are likable and relatable. The movie isn't really isn't scary, though, but there are plenty of scenes that definitely still get my heart racing.

10/22/14

Halloween (1978)
It's 9 days until Halloween, so tonight I started my viewing of all the Halloween movies that I own. My goal is to watch one at least one a night leading up to next Friday. Now, Halloween is such a great movie. Sure, now, it's kind of cheesy it parts (especially the murder at the beginning), but it does so much else right. I really like the slow burn of the movie which adds to the suspense and the final showdown between Michael and Laurie is fantastic.

10/25/14

Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island
Not only one of my favorite of the Scooby-Doo movies, but probably near the top of my all-time favorite animated movies. I just love the backdrop of this one with Mystery Inc. breaking up and going their separate ways then getting back together. Plus, the movie is actually quite funny at times if you like that Scooby-Doo charm and it is really dark for a Scooby movie which I think sets it apart from the rest.

10/27/14

The Cabin in the Woods
My 2nd time seeing this one and boy did I have fun with it. I really like the humor in this one and found myself laughing out loud more than a couple times. On top of that, it's pretty tense, even though I wish the filmmakers had given us a chance to get to know the characters a little better. But, I think what I really like best about The Cabin in the Woods is the different spin on why these kids were lured to the cabin.

10/28/14

The Crazies (2010)
IMO, this is one of the remakes that outdoes its predecessor. There are a lot of disturbing, creepy and even scary moments in this one that definitely had me on the edge of my seat. Especially when I haven't seen the movie in a while.

10/29/14

Regular Show: Terror Tales of the Park Part IV*
The first year I've actually paid attention to Regular Show's Halloween specials and boy do I hate that I've missed the others. I really like when cartoons or shows do holiday specials and I really enjoyed this one. It had some pretty goods stories in it and definitely had that Regular Show humor that had me laughing out loud quite a bit throughout.

Tremors 1/2
Tremors is a fun little movie to sit through. It has quite a bit of humor in it which is enjoyable. Especially when Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward are so likable and are both great in this movie. I also like the different take on monsters in this movie and it definitely has some scenes that got my heart racing.

This movie simply is Halloween. Essential viewing.

An decent movie again made better by a great creepy performance by Bela Lugosi.
The Death Kiss Not really a horror movie but a fun little mystery that reunited Bela Lugosi, David Manners and Edward Van Sloan.

The Innkeepers - ***1/2 - After loving The House of the Devil, I've always wanted to watch more of Ti West's work. This movie is brilliant, it's slow-burn just like THOTD was and actually makes you care for it's characters, Sara Paxton does a great job here. The only reason I didn't give this a full 4 stars is because
[Show spoiler]the ending just seemed a little meh, I didn't really want to know why the ghost wanted to kill, but it would have been nice to know why Claire died as she was a great character. Also Kelly McGillis' character was a bit far-fetched.

Open Graves - 1/2 - Jumanji type board game that kills, blah, pass. The acting was corny and the characters uninteresting.

Got through all my favorite seasonal movies by last night. Might watch The Wolfman or maybe Halloween 4 for the second time. Enjoy today everyone.

Edit: I'll be watching the 1992 british broadcast of Ghostwatch tonight and then I'll wrap it all up with a late night viewing of th Night of the Living Dead

October Marathon 2014 - 31 Days Of Horror
Previous Entries: | Schedule | 1-5 | 6-9 | 10-16 | 17-21 |

[22] Dead Of Night
A very common problem with anthology films, I find, is a wraparound section that feels more like a plot device to deliver the other segments, rather than a cohesive foundation. Dead Of Night is a master class. A gripping wraparound narrative escorts us through a variety of tales, gradually building up dread, with one perfectly timed dose of comic relief before delivering the most chilling. The main character’s nightmarish traversal through all of the stories towards the end is a particular highlight.

[23] Night Of The Comet
Night Of The Comet is one of those movies that are unmistakably a product of their time. Stuffed with kitsch 80s charm, big hair, bold colours, a soundtrack evocative of the period and attitude in spades, Night Of The Comet is gloriously fun. But underneath the gaudiness there is some striking cinematography, desolate landscapes filled with warm block colours that provide a backdrop to a post apocalyptic thematic that is hugely oversaturated at present, 30 years later.

[24] The Babadook
There seems to be a really poor line up of horror films theatrically this Halloween season, and The Babadook is pulling in rave reviews, so it seemed like the perfect choice. It’s superbly acted, rarely do actors display such contorted terror convincingly, the storybook elements are suitably creepy and it’s maturely executed with a lot of heart. But I found myself a little bored at times. It lacks bite; the most memorable scene features a vibrator rather than anything genuinely horrific.

[25] Creepshow
Creepshow is a love letter to horror comic books from the 1950s helmed by two legends of horror in their respective fields, Stephen King and George A. Romero. Delivered in a stylistically original and inventive way at the same time paying homage to the comic books, Creepshow is comfortably more enjoyable than any of the recurring spate of modern blockbuster comic book movies. A devilishly black sense of humour permeates in this riotously fun anthology of tales.

[26] Robin Redbreast
I picked this up on DVD recently, and couldn’t wait to watch it. Originally shot in colour this made for TV movie sadly now only exists in its current black and white state thanks to cost cutting measures by the BBC. It’s very typical of a lot of British rural horror movies, isolation and alienation are the pervading themes with a cult folklore underpinning, but interestingly this was ahead of the curve being released in 1970. The close-knit sinister inhabitants of the town are a high point and the attitudes to contraception during the period hugely interesting.

30. A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) -

This movie gets so much unwarranted hate. I saw this back in theatres before seeing all the NOES movies so it was nice to revisit the remake after seeing all the NOES movies. After seeing all the NOES movies, I like the remake even more. I actually prefer Rooney Mara over Heather Langenkamp. I also liked how they explored Freddy's possible innocence. I think this is one of the better entries on the NOES franchise and is a tad better than the original.

29. Freddy vs. Jason -

Two of the greatest horror icons are together in the same movie. The story was pretty good and the female lead was good. From a fan's perspective I would have liked to see the proposed Pinhead ending but the ending they went with worked well.

28. Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare -

Don't really know what to think about this movie except that it is very unique. Will have to watch this at least a couple more times to properly digest it. I have a couple theories about what is going on in the movie though.

[Show spoiler]27. The Coed and the Zombie Stoner -

This is a horror comedy by Asylum. It was way better than I thought it was going to be. By no means is it a good film but I had some fun watching it.

26. Misery -

Nice to see a quality horror movie after seeing a few duds. Good performances all around with Kathy Bates topping the list.

25. Teeth -

Interesting premise, but the film is pretty boring and uneventful especially considering what the film is about. They should have made this completely a B horror title as it seemed they were going back and forth deciding if they wanted to be taken seriously or not. Or a Grindhouse style film might have been better as well.

24. Scary or Die -

This is an anthology film consisting of 5 short stories which is too many considering its short runtime of 90 minutes. None of the stories get enough time to build a story that you would be interested in. The main story, and the best of out the bunch, is called Clowned which they actually spent quite a bit of time on so we get some back story but it does not really matter as its not that good anyways.

23. Donner Pass -

This movie is about a group of teenagers who take a trip up to the mountains but there is a cannibal on the loose. It is awful. They tried to put a twist in but I saw it coming from the beginning.

22. Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare -

Can't believe they passed on the original script with Alice and Peter Jackson's script for this piece of crap. What were they thinking?

21. Afflicted -

This is the best found footage film I have seen and probably one of the best modern horror films. I could not believe the budget was only $318,000. It looked like it cost a lot more to make, especially considering the fact that they filmed in 4 countries. Anyways the set up was really good and it was presented in a unique way that I liked. I don't really want to say anymore because I don't want to spoil anything but definitely check it out. I watched a trailer for this film a few months ago and didn't think too much of it so just skip the trailer and watch the film.

20. Annabelle -

I did not like The Conjuring so I was a bit skeptical about this movie, but I ended up enjoying it. It had good characters and a few good scares. I did not like the ending though.

19. A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child -

Good to see Alice in this one as she was the best part of the last movie. Overall a decent addition to the franchise with the comic book dream sequence being the highlight.

18. A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master -

It got off to a bad start with how they brought back Freddy and it ended bad with how Freddy was defeated. Also thought all the characters were annoying except for Alice. And do we really need more "dream powers"?

17. A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors -

Really enjoyed this one. Freddy and the dream sequences were really good in this one. Also liked how you found out more about his back story. Only thing I didn't like were the "dream powers" as I found it really cheesy but besides that no complains.

16. A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge -

Liked this one a bit more then the first one. Liked the whole idea of Freddy needing a host if he wants to exist in the real world. Thought the pool scene with Freddy was good.

15. Killer Toon -

This is a Korean film about a horror comic artist whose comic drawings are actually happening in real life. The thing that really stood out for me was the style of the "comic book" scenes that are seen throughout the film. There are also a couple of jump scares thrown in for good measure.

14. Rosemary's Baby (1968) -

Even though this film is usually generally praised, I did not like it. The whole film felt like a slow burn but with no payoff at the end.

13. Willow Creek -

This is a found footage film actually done right. The two main characters are actually believable and the found footage work felt organic and did not feel forced. Just be warned that you don't see the creature in this film but that also adds another layer of debate to this film.

12. Leprechaun 2 -

Thought that the characters and humor in the first movie was better.

11. Pet Sematary -

To be honest I found this to be quite boring. Almost fell asleep a couple times watching it. Though I will admit Fred Gwynne gives a good performance.

10. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) -

Not my favorite horror franchise but still entertaining. Always liked the ending.

9. Sinister -

A solid movie though I found it to be repetitive in certain parts.

8. Leprechaun -

I don't know if this was supposed to be intentionally funny or was just funny because of a bad script. Anyhow I found myself enjoying this movie and laughing quite a bit. Looking forward to watching the sequels.

7. Body Bags -

I am a big fan of anthology movies and this one delivered. All the stories were great and I thought John Carpenter gave a good performance as the Coroner.

6. Devil's Due -

Yet another found footage movie and as expected its pretty bad.

5. Mother's Day (2010) -

I would not really classify this as a horror movie but supposedly it is horror according to this site. Anyways, the actress who played the Mother was superb. Gave off a very creepy vibe. However the supporting cast was rather weak.

4. American Horror Story: Asylum -

This season was fantastic. I thought it was better than the first season. Great performances all around. Only complaint I had was that it was kind of hard to keep track of the timeline (especially later on in the season).

3. V/H/S 2 -

I really enjoyed the "Eye" story and the zombie story was also good. I could not stand the cult story and the alien story had potential but could have been flushed out a lot more. But still this franchise has had two pretty good entries so far and I hope that they will keep making them in the years to come.

2. Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984) -

I am probably being generous to this movie and giving it a higher score then it deserves. However I liked how they tried to establish the main character's background and examined his motives. I also liked the idea of a killer Santa.

1. American Horror Story: The First Season -

This is my second time watching the first season. I didn't love it as much the second time around. I thought that some of the middle episodes dragged on for a bit. Still I enjoyed it quite a bit and would recommend it.

Haven't updated this sucker in a while, so I got a lot. Up to 40 Halloween-themed movies now, so it's much better progress than I expected.

This might be an iffy choice for horror, but something about it strikes me as freaky, enigmatic, and atmospheric enough for a good fall-time or Halloween-time flick. It's a pretty weird and trippy plot, but it comes in full circle beautifully.

Maybe not horror, but once again, it seems like a good Halloween picture. The imagery is appropriately dark and gothic. The supernatural elements are magnificently mystical. Action scenes are really cool. The film tends to feel rushed, thanks to some rapid-fire editing, but it is still really dark and primal stuff.

Nothing but a good ol' fashioned monster movie. Dialogue is cheesy, the plot's kinda silly, but the titular blob is a pretty cool thing.

Cheesy in its own right, but the gore effects are phenomenal.

That woman is scary. And this film seems to get better the more I watch it; it was a good book as it was, but the movie is spot-on and gripping.

Yep, the Japanese make some really frakked-up stuff. This is a pretty weird story, but it has some really gnarly suicide scenes. I may never look at kitchen knives, trains, or girly pop music the same way again.

Good film, good punchline, probably won't ever want to see it again. Something about this film just fails to glue with me personally.

I expected worse. Action scenes are alright, the film mostly looks good, acting is swell, and it's great to finally see some medieval Transylvanian action. It's just the story that's kinda weak, and the film overall feels like more of the same.

I've given this movie a few tries now, and it never really succeeds in capturing my interest.

It's cheesy, but that's the point. It's better than I remember, generally good fun.

Fairly creepy at times, and the film is fairly tasteful in the way it refrains from overdoing the blood and gore. It gets a bit slow, the plot's stupid, but the mad doctor is one creepy dude, and his centipede is pretty gnarly.

Now that is some seriously sick garbage. And I love it!!

I was impressed; the story's pretty interesting, the narrative is great, the characters are well-developed, and the imagery throughout is quite freaky. Easily one of the better horror films to have come out in the last few years.

Into the Mirror (can't find cover art on this site)

It's alright. Pretty good effects.

Better than I remember; great silly fun with plenty of wicked gore.

Kinda stupid.

The first movie is a classic. The second one is certainly not as quotable, and it suffers from significant tone issues, but it's still decent.

GB1:
GB2:

Cheap and silly, but the gore effects are quite over-the-top.

Now that I played some of the games, I can see where the film comes from and understand some of the nuances of the plot better. It is kinda dense in the movie, but I always admired the film's atmosphere, visual style, effects, and the overall experience. It is decently-freaky and well-made. Dialogue can be pretty stupid, but the film is still a favorite of mine. And the quality of the French edition still blows my mind.

Interesting concept but movie seemed sloppy overall, rushed and a bit confusing. dont really understand the pendulum ordeal either.... why did they reset it every hour? was the ghost known to come out every hour?

[Show spoiler]why did the brother release the pendulum killing his sister in the first place?

Wrong Turn 6: Last Resort - 5/10

A lot of complaints about this movie focus on the amount of nudity and sex. I have no issue with it except that it isn't quite worked into the DNA of the story and theme's the way it could be. If they had done that it would service the movie better. The real issue though is poorly handled character development and an unfocused script. Aside from that it's actually pretty decent. I like the location, actresses, and the feeling that some effort was put into this entry.
