USA Miami Blues (1990) - February 24, 2015

Miami Blues Blu-ray

Quote:
Brace yourself... this intoxicating "cocktail with rum and cyanide" (Time) is at once "brutal, funny, unpredictable and a bit unhinged" (Newsweek)! Fred Ward, Alec Baldwin and Jennifer Jason Leigh star in this offbeat black comedy about a murdering thief, his simple-minded wife and the denture-wearing cop closing in on his trail.

Veteran criminal Frederick Frenger, Jr. (Baldwin) has moved to Miami to get a fresh start... at robbing a whole new set of people. But when his streetwalker-gone-straight wife (Leigh) begins to suspect his criminal behavior, and an obsessed cop (Ward) begins to close in, he will need a lot more than luck and a bogus badge to escape a crossfire hotter than the barrel of a smoking gun!

Awesome! Now we just need some other early 90's classics like "The Getaway" remake.

Nothing guilty about it: this is one of the best movies of the 90's. Shoulda been Oscars for everybody...

JJL is the selling point of this film. Put that goofy guy on the back cover.

Used to have this one on DVD, I'll gladly pick up the BD once it's released.

At last. A big favourite of mine, should have been followed by the rest of the Hoke Moseley books. Better late than never, FX has done a pilot with Paul Giamatti. There's a very good film of Charles Willeford's The Woman Chaser that deserves a blu ray and his novel The Shark Infested Custard is begging to be filmed.

Have never seen this movie but anything from this era that's set in Miami (or L.A.) I will blind buy in a heartbeat.

I always wondered about director George Armitage. He has a total of seven directing credits, 10 screenplays, and 3 producing efforts in his career according to IMDB. This doesn't seem like enough to make a living over 50+ years to me, does anyone know if he does anything else? Maybe a script doctor? If he were doing second unit direction it would show up on IMDB. Or is he independently wealthy?

This article

has some info but no real answers.

There are a few directors like that - Elliot Silverstein springs to mind with two big hits (Cat Ballou and A Man Called Horse), a few TV episodes and only three other features. Sometimes people in the industry spend forever in development Hell, attached to projects that get some development funding but never get greenlit. Even a director as prolific as Richard Fleischer had a five year gap in his career with projects like Sacco and Vanzetti and Nightrunners of Bengal collapsing at the last minute and leading to lengthy lawsuits to get his money from Dino De Laurentiis and the guarantors of Samuel Bronston Productions.

Hmm.. I don't know if I would categorize this as a Jonathan Demme movie, anymore than Gremlins and Who Framed Roger Rabbit are Steven Spielberg movies. He was one of the producers. But I might put it in the Jonathan Demme category in my collection since he has so few movies.

BTW, they updated the cover slightly, now it's the "Collector's Edition", which is probably good since that usually means plenty of extras:

My point was, if you like Miami Blues, you might like Something Wild.
