The reason for this listing is that Sony's presentation of subtitles on the US disc will drastically affect a majority of viewers' enjoyment of the film. I saw The White Ribbon in the cinema during its international theatrical run and the subs displayed on the print were taller and bigger than they are on the US Blu-ray. I also viewed Sony's video master on a large projection screen in an auditorium and there was a significant difference in the subs' diminutive font size. The problem on the Blu-ray is that the subs are not only very small, but they're also not very bright. As one reviewer put it, they make you "squint throughout the work irregardless of the size of your television screen or when you visited an optometrist, the work can be a bit rough going." (See example here.) By contrast, the white subs are done flawlessly on the Artificial Eye UK disc. They are displayed with a sans serif font and are quite clear and bright. (See example here.)

Although I don't own the Austrian version, I've done a lot of research on it in comparison to the Anchor Bay (and seen some screen caps of each), and I've concluded that they are very, very similar in terms of A/V quality. There isn't the disparity in image like there is with Part 4 so I would suggest avoiding the import and just picking up the Region A. I did.

The PQ looks better to me on the Korean edition from the screenshots, and it does technically have a slightly higher bit-rate too. It looks like the picture was darkened a bit on the US release and it resulted in some of the detail not being quite as refined looking.

Granted, I heard the KR edition doesn't have proper subtitles for all of the Korean dialogue, If I remember correctly, so that means someone would have to make a custom edition to get all of the benefits between editions. And the extras weren't subtitled.

I was thinking about getting the Korean edition (as the steelbook, slip-box and booklet looks really cool) and putting both US discs in it. But it is really frustrating to see that this director-approved KR edition has some more picture and slightly better detail. Maybe not a deal-breaker, but it certainly would have been nice for it to have been the same on the US edition. This is of course if the US and CA editions are exactly the same (as they usually are coming from the same source... it sounds like they are).

I also have to disagree strongly. The compression is nasty on the KR disc.

Seriously? The compression looks weaker in some spots but it also looks like the US disc was artifically darkened and shows less fine detail. Maybe it's a 50/50, take your pick.

As opposed to the BD-25 disc employed by Magnolia, Studio Canal chose BD-50 for the UK release. This results in better compression and nearly twice the total bitrate (33.39 Mbps for the S.C.). The US shows occasional signs of banding and blocking. The S.C. doesn't reveal any digital compression artifacts and banding and aliasing are absent.
