He also said it was protected for 16x9, as OTA content was well on it's way in that direction.
I can easily see this being another example of "the sky is falling" then when the product is released everyone will rave about it.
Would it be ideal if both AR's are included(like BSG)? Of course, but that's not in the cards with this release.

They've had to digitally remove set equipment from the additional image, and correct sync issues from actors that were previously not visible. Protected? Yeah, right.

What's interesting is that they originally wanted to shoot the show in 16:9...

You might want to check out this version of David's discussion on his blog. He provides some examples of scenes from the wire in 4:3 and 16:9 that he thinks are helped or hurt by the change in AR.

I feel better seeing his involvement, but like others I still hope they include the OAR along with the new WS version. I would be more than happy to spend a few more bucks to get both.

At first glance, the above posters' avatars are similar enough that I thought it was one person talking to himself.

I often talk to myself, but usually not through websites.

Here's a comparison from the first episode, that's what David Simon was referring to when he talked about going tighter on certain shots (an arguable trade-off).

Quote:
That shot composition was purposed, and clever, and it works better in the 4:3 version than when the screen is suddenly widened to pick up additional neon to the left of Bey.

In such a case, the new aspect ratio’s ability to acquire more of the world actually detracts from the intention of the scene and the composition of the shot. For that reason, we elected in the new version to go tighter on the key two-shot of Bey and D’Angelo in order to maintain some of the previous composition, albeit while coming closer to our backlit characters than the scene requires.

You can watch the 3 versions of the scene on his blog : http://davidsimon.com/the-wire-hd-with-videos/

He provided this example as one where the original SD worked better, although HD isn't far off. He has another example on his blog where he shows a scene on the docks where HD worker better than the SD version. I found his discussion and videos fascinating for anyone who has not looked at them yet.

Very interesting!
I was particularly amazed that: "HBO production team had done a metric ton of work painting out C-stands and production assistants, as well as solving a good many sync problems."

That to me is better than simply cropping the instances where this occurs.

Yes I have been watching sporadically just to see what it looks like in HD and I'm impressed. They did a great job.
