Honestly, I found ARGO very over-rated. I'll hate to re-watch to see if my opinion changes.
Dying to see Silver Linings Playbook, but my theater isn't showing it. Lincoln was pretty decent. Great acting roles in it. It wasn't as "exciting" as I had hoped. And yes, I know what the intentions of the film were, and it was fine for the most part, but it could have used a bit of sprucing up here and there. Very excited for Zero Dark Thirty & Django Unchained. Haven't seen The Master or Life of Pi. Might see Pi in theaters. I think Flight was over-rated as well. Denzel was good, but he's always good lol it's like Meryl Streep. Moonrise Kingdom was quirky and fun. Need to re-watch it though. Dark Knight was over-rated. Not even that good. ![]() No interest in The Hobbit. Les Mes could be pretty good. |

not to be harsh on silver linings as it was entertaining. But its a standard romance packaged as something else.
although i wouldnt let that put anyone off. its not oscar worthy at all for me. I can see the dark Knight getting some love, similiar I suppose to how the return of the king did. The master was just awful for myself (fantastic performances) but nothing else really, I guess people just dont care about having a narrative at all anymore! |

Ever since the first of the year Les Mis was looking like the clear favorite to take home best picture, but in a matter of days that has all changed...
Zero Dark Thirty, is really picking up some steam right now, the win at the New York critics awards was a big momentum changer. I wrote this film off because I felt it was too similar to Hurt Locker. I found it difficult to think the academy would go for it so soon after it handed Hurt Locker best picture. But it may just be that good. I also know the studio has released DVD screeners of Les Mis to the critics and word of mouth has been solid on Hathaway for the win and Crow and Jackman for noms. But the best picture talk just wasn't there, while I'm sure it will get a nom, a win is as far out of the picture as it has ever been. This is a nice little twist to the race, as it was unexpected. So right now Lincoln vs. Dark Thirty. Still not as interesting of a choice as say, Silver Linings vs. Dark Thirty or Les Mis vs. Argo, but I would probably take it over Les Mis vs. Lincoln. |

Am I the only person that feels that both Christopher Nolan and Joss Whedon should at least receive a best director nom for 2 of the best blockbusters of the year. Both movies were crowd pleasers and were received well by critics.
I mean creating an indie gem is one thing but spare a thought for the director that has to not only please fans and critics but they also has an obligation to the studio who lets face it only cares about money. * |

-Argo and Lincoln are locks. -Life of Pi has a great shot, but I'm not willing to call lock yet. It seems to be admired more from a technical marvel than as a film, which doesn't wholly preclude it and may not even be a hindrance this year, with potentially ten slots and a weak(er) field. Of those yet to see a release... -Zero Dark Thirty, Les Miserables appear to be locks, especially the former. -Django Unchained and The Impossible appear to be strong contenders, based on buzz. Other... -Moonrise Kingdom or Beasts of the Southern Wild can snap up the 'small/indie' slot, but there is not the overwhelming popular buzz for those as seen from indie champions of years past. But I expect for one of these - or The Sessions, opening wide soon but in the same boat for slot as these two - to sneak into a rather weak Best Picture race. -Speaking of these 'champions', The Master looked primed to run away with that mantle for this season but like the films above has failed to garner a great deal of support. I don't really expect a Best Picture nomination at this time. -Silver Linings Playbook - I think its shot as gone with its box-office, where it is not performing remarkably well. I won't be shocked if it sneaks into the field, but I'm not counting on it. Now Acting on the other hand... This is not as clear, largely because many movies have not quite delivered - at least overwhelmingly - as some of the obvious nods did last year. Quote:
I can give Whedon credit for his balancing act on The Avengers - which is an important aspect of Direction - but what comes forth on the screen via regards of the Academy is largely a function of the script, tech/special effects and performances (RDJ and Ruffalo as The Hulk), not necessarily what above and beyond these pales Whedon brought forth in his direction. That is to say longwindedly that those things are going to be what get the credit. This is not a knock, I actually think Whedon did a fine job, but a nomination for Direction will not come with this picture. Last edited by Cinemach; 12-05-2012 at 12:36 AM. |
