I'm glad you liked the movie. If not liking the film and expressing why I did not like it in a rather detailed review is obnoxious, then I guess I am obnoxious.

It's like I said before, people only like the first amendment if they agree with you. If they do not agree with you, you suddenly become obnoxious.

Actually, I have been a fan of this franchise for a good fifteen plus years now, so I think I know a thing or two about the franchise. I especially can tell when the producers of the original classic trilogy has *****d the film's title to a modern girl ghost movie to sell movie tickets.

I do love the original and its two sequels very much. To say that this new remake is on par with the original is just plain silly talk, to me.

Maybe people bash CGI and "stuff that is new" because a lot of "stuff that is new" is crap. Films are not made the way they used to be. CGI is something that is good for films like Avatar an Jurassic Park, but not needed in the horror genre, for the most part.

It seems that you take my review personal. If that is the case, I do not know what to tell you. My opinion is not going to change. The movie was a mediocre attempt at best to cash in on a title while really catering to the modern female ghost movie crowd.

I am not the horror community. I am just one member of it.

The director had not a clue as to what he was doing making an Evil Dead film. I did not hear "Join us" one time in that entire film. Shame on him.

That is my story, and I will stick to it. If you don't like it, that is your problem.
They used the original "Join Us" voice right when they arrive at the cabin in the beginning of the film. They also used many of possessed Cheryl's dialogue from the original film in the scene where Mia is first possessed. You must not have been paying attention. Also, the film was done almost entirely with practical effects. Why are you discussing CGI?

There's also very little CGI in the movie. Much has been made about the use of practical effects in the remake.

EDIT: Gah, you beat me.

I'm no special effects expert, so maybe I'm off base here, but I think they used more CGI in this film than the creators are letting on.

There aren't NO computer generated effects in the movie. It's just that there is very, very little.

They only used it where completely necessary. Most of the CGI is in the scene where the girl cuts her arm off.

The blood dripping seemed really CGI to me but it was still gruesome

Gotta love that
[Show spoiler] Chainsaw to the head in the End, man that was beautiful lol I did not see a hint of CGI there.

In many ways, it should be "franchise unidentifiable", whatever that means. It should be it's own thing. It's not a sequel, it's a REMAKE. If it was a sequel, then, yes, it should follow something similar to the originals. Zombie's Halloween was it's own thing, for better or worse. If you want the original franchise, go watch the original franchise.

And so what if Raimi wanted to use the Evil Dead name to sell it, so that he can now potentially make his own Evil dead 4 (which he is presumably writing)? It's his and Tappert's (and I guess in a way Campbell's) to do with as they with. I think the creators know their film franchise better than any fans do.

But again, to complain the movie sucked because it didn't copy the originals isn't the way to watch any film. Remakes should never wink or nod to the originals IMO, they should stand on their own, for everyone who hasn't seen the other films. Most of the time, "homages" to the originals just take you out of the film like a bad inside joke.

Saw it last night and prefer the term "reimagining". It was a fun movie, I'm not one that gets scared in movies, lost the ability to suspend the disbelief, especially in horror films, a long time ago, but it was enjoyable and yes the
[Show spoiler]chainsaw to the face was phenomenal
hope they got that in one take.

Possession movies are all the rage today - Lionsgate releases one every January - so, to me, this new Evil Dead film comes off as just another entry in that category. Nothing in this remake really says "this is an Evil Dead movie" - we're just making a little horror flick about some kids in the woods where some stuff goes down - thanks for stopping by. Actually, while watching the film all I could think of was "oh, torture porn - Eli Roth is gonna pop up any minute in a cameo". I was also thinking of J-Horror movies like The Grudge. The prologue reminded me of 1982's "Superstition" for some reason. It wasn't a bad film, just nothing about it felt like I was watching an Evil Dead movie to me.

How can you compare this to a modern girl ghost movie. The thing is loaded with gore and references to the original film. It's hard to believe a fan of the Evil Dead movies wouldn't at least find this enjoyable.

I agree, it was pretty generic and lifeless.

I love how every horror film gets labeled "torture porn" these days.

Now I've read it all. The film almost follows the same exact sequence as the original. I don't see how the brief appearances of ghost girl makes this completely different. How many films would have her take a chainsaw to the face.

Dude I don't know why you're responding to me, I never said you are obnoxious. I didn't even say everyone who disliked it was obnoxious, what I did say is that often (not always) the people who dislike a film are obnoxious about it (on the internet) I am referring to those who say things along the lines of "this movie sucked, worst movie ever, you're not a fan if you like it".
You have overblown what I said. I could have been more clear and that's where the mistake lies. No one is out to get you.

This.

With the way the Deadites talk ("You're little sister's being raped in Hell!"), plus the fact that it's just the usual, generic "Satan" and "Hell" stuff, rather than Sumerian demons...plus the pissing on the floor, the vomiting, the style of the contact lenses, etc., etc....it felt more like an Exorcist movie set in a cabin, but without an exorcist there to take care of the demon. The only thing that felt somewhat "Evil Dead" was the gore.

Thing about the film, is that most of the criticisms (from those who actually paid attention to the movie) are valid. I can understand each and every point someone brings up... it's just that some people enjoyed it, and some didn't. I personally enjoyed it, but felt it could have been quite a bit better. Still one of the better remakes I've seen, regardless.

This is pretty much how I felt. I enjoyed it, but it had more than its share of problems. Considering there are only five characters, it should have been easy enough to supply them with personalities. In fact, they had personalities in the original script, but the film itself pretty much GUTS the first act of the script. Ultimately, the characters are two-dimensional, some end up being entirely superfluous (why is David's girlfriend even in this film?), and others act in a completely illogical manner (due to lacking any motivation for their actions).

Aside from that, it's just all the stuff ripped from The Exorcist and unceremoniously wedged into an Evil Dead that feels...well...wrong.

I still enjoyed the ride once the blood hose started spraying, and it's great to see mostly practical FX in a horror movie in this day and age. I liked it okay...I'll buy the BD when it comes out...but I think the general horror community is way overpraising this one. Given all the hype, I was expecting to like this one quite a bit more than I did. It was fine, but it's #4 in my Evil Dead ranking.
