Agree - but as of last week it's been nicely equalled/beaten on that front..!
Thanks Sam. This is one of those situations where the director Matt Reeves (of The Batman too) or whoever made the final decisions, just didn't have much passion or interest in an impactful 3D presentation. I need to read some interviews about the 3D results on this one.

Isn't this the one where he's often been quoted as having said something along the lines of, "I wanted a 2D aesthetic with the 3D" or some such nonsense?

I have to say, I think I put this up there with the most disappointing results from a natively shot 3D movie (along with that Spider-man film): It's so gorgeous looking and, like you say, the 3D could have brought out a load of that beauty in a stunning way but, for whatever reason, its 3D is so tame and bland that it's one of those where I wonder why they bothered. (As ever, I think the reason was an accounting one; not an artistic one...)

Yes, thanks. That's why it's odd that occasionally there are some medium to strong 3D shots throughout Dawn, as if there was a conflict in the vision between the terribly mild 3D versus the medium to stronger 3D shots as rare as they were.

That's a good point, where Amazing Spider-Man 1's 3D suffered from a lot of mild 3D to the point it was nearly 2D also, and then also had some rare moments of strong and medium layers of 3D. A mostly inconsistent, but overall disappointing 3D presentation despite the more impressive, strong 3D action scenes.

I have to rewatch Underworld Awakening, which also has milder 3D during non-action scenes yet was filmed in 3D (with some converted shots).
Tron Legacy, filmed in 3D, but was held back by mostly mild 3D, with maybe some occasional medium layering and one strong 3D shot.

And Pixar's UP, a natively rendered stereo 3D film with a virtual stereo 3D camera rig inside the movie's 3D computer graphics world, I remember reading the guy in charge said he wants to make the 3D linked to the emotional story telling of the scenes. Sadly, much of that film was in mild 3D, with only the more "emotional" or action moments amping up in 3D for rare moments. I haven't rewatched that in 3D since I saw it in theaters way back then, but remember feeling disappointed with the 3D overall.

Proof that having a 3D camera rig doesn't automatically mean it's going to be a worthwhile 3D presentation if most of the 3D is mild.
