I can agree to this. As a small, indie filmmaker; I have been converting my film to the old school red/blue 3D and a conversion can work wonders. I'll convert all of my films until I can afford to get a 3D camera.

Star Trek is amazing in the 9 min preview. Oz is amazing. These two really stand out to me on the IMAX 3D. Must watch for me when they come out next year. Star Trek will set a new bench mark for a converted movie.
Nice! Also be sure to post your news in the Hobbit thread. Thanks for the early info on the Hobbit, and Star Trek. Was Trek in 3D? Yes, Oz looks great in 3D.

Any chance in the future your movies will be side by side or top/bottom stereo 3D? If so, then I'd be interested in seeing your conversions, though red/cyan is classic, it has a lot of double image that can't be blocked out in the opposing red or cyan eye as well as it can with stereo 3D, which is mostly noticeable during ghosting shots with bright lights on a black background. Were you able to complete Horror Express? That was a great movie I'd like to see in stereo 3D in 2013.

Wonder if a site will post the 9 minute clip of Star Trek?

Finally caught these previews in theaters before the Hobbit 3D.

They showed Oblivion and After Earth in 2D along with Star Trek (which is also 3D). Then showed Jack the Giant Killer 3D and Man of Steel 3D.

Oblivion or After Earth, one of them said "April 2012" as the release date, only four months away or so. Not much time to hold off announcing the 3D, so if we get to January and there's no announcement, it's not looking promising that these sci fi post apocalypse films would also be offered in 3D.

Thanks for the intel Z. Can't believe they did not consider 3D for these two flicks.....especially Oblivion .

I still have the files green/magenta 3D version of Horror Express on my laptop, I'll try to upload it on Youtube since it's Public Domain, maybe around Christmas.

For Traumatic Possession 3D: The Tape, the Blu-ray will have this:

HD - 720p - 2D Version - 2.35:1
HD - 720p - Anaglyph 3D Red/Blue Version - 2.35:1
SD - 480i - 2D "Video" Version - 1.33:1
HD - 720p - Into the Madness: A Documentary - 2.35:1

Since the film was shot in 720p, we're pretty much going to keep it in 720p for the Blu-ray. The master came out to 9.25 GB for 70 minutes, so, we still have 40 more GB to fill up on the disc. I'm planning for the "video" version to be about 3 GB since it's going to be SD. It's going to be 1.33:1, but it's going to made from the original 1.78:1 video files which means you'll have more image on the top and bottom, but lose image on the left and right sides of the image. We're going to transfer it to a beat up VHS tape and then re-upload it. Into the Madness is only planned to be 70 to 75 minutes.

So, with all of that, we're looking at a minimum 33GB used out of 50GB. If we can do a stereoscopic 3D conversion and fill up the remaining disc space, then I'd go for it. We probably won't get around to the Blu-ray until Thanksgiving 2013. We're currently looking for people to subtitle the film in as many languages as we can get for the disc. We've all ready got people down to make subtitles in German, French, and Finnish.

But, I've got a side project going on and that is to remaster and release films on Blu-ray. I've got four films on celluloid; three of which are Public Domain. Nosferatu; The Lucky Texan; and The Monster Walks. The one that is not Public Domain, which I have a 35mm print, is Italian director Bruno Mattei's S.S. Girls.

For the ones that are in Public Domain, we plan on doing 3D conversions. The original 2D versions will be OAR while I am considering re-framing them to 1.78 for their 3D versions. Out of the three, Nosferatu is in pretty rough shape. The first few minutes are hacked up pretty badly and all of the titles need redone as my print has all of the names fit to Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Yes, it does seem like a missed opportunity, since Sci Fi involves a lot of great imagery, CGI that does well with 3D.

Also very happy to hear Wolverine will now be in 3D and of course 2D (both formats are important to cinema).

Sounds cool for your 3D conversion work and films for 2013. You have your hands full with projects. I hope you will eventually release your conversions in stereo 3D format also to take advantage of 3DTVs as side by side or top/bottom can easily be blended with a 3DTV, as it was presented with the digital Carnival of Souls 3D conversion, as well as Blood of Ohma 3D (both SBS).

DVD side by side is also a worthwhile consideration. Any chance you'll have a SBS version of Horror Express 3D on DVD? It'll play in 3D SBS on a 3DTV, just with lower resolution as you probably knew. Thanks OrlandoEastwood.

Thanks for the update. I wonder what Frozen is about. I'll have to take a look. Glad to see Wolverine in 3D.

Not doing Oblivion in 3D is insane, especially as the directors last movie was in 3D (Tron Legacy)

Default Catalog Blu-ray 3D Releases Coming from Lionsgate and Samsung

news for all you 3D lovers.. The Descent, Crank, Bangkok Dangerous, and Gamer will be getting the 3D treatment

Lionsgate and Samsung Become Partners
Posted January 9, 2013 08:18 PM by Webmaster

Lionsgate Films and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced today that they are partnering to provide 3D offerings of popular theatrical titles for the home entertainment market. The announcement was made at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

The first films to be converted in 3D, utilizing Samsung's proprietary 3D image processing technology, will be Gamer, Crank, and Bangkok Dangerous, as well as the horror thriller hit The Descent.

There were three times as many 3D enabled Blu-ray releases in 2012 than in 2011, while 3D television households nearly doubled from 3.5 million in 2011 to an estimated 6.4 million in 2012.

Agreed. Joseph Kosinski, director of Tron Legacy, did a great job on the movie itself with his talented crew and cast, though the 3D is debatable for it's average 3D layers, which I'd guess had to be approved by him (someone mentioned Tron Legacy didn't have a stereographer on the set).
Oblivion would have been great for 3D.

Now that he's completed it, his plate is open for Tron 3 hopefully, which is in early pre-production I heard.

Saw a poster today for Iron Man 3, where he's looking at the suits to pick from. Glad it'll be in 3D. May 2013.

Above is the thread.

Even so, thanks for offering this information, which is promising news for 3D if Lionsgates treats 3D with respect (gives their conversions medium/strong 3D). If they try to crank out I Robot's mostly weak quality 3D, I'll pass.

+1 to Oblivion in 3D.

Joseph Kosinski, decided against high frame rates for his upcoming 2D sci-fi film Oblivion after tests saying: “Certainly motion is rendered better and you could say fast frame is a more realistic format, so for some things, it could make a lot of sense,” says Kosinski. “It’s one thing to watch something like a nature documentary, where the more realism, the better. But when it comes to something dramatic, it’s a different mode. My visceral reaction was that it just didn’t feel right for our story.”

Saw the Man of Steel trailer before the Hobbit and this is one I am looking forward to.

Also the new Thor and Captain America sequels should be pretty sweet.
