Hopefully they can get Linda Blair back as well.

Also, they better not retcon 3!

Looks like it's safe.

"The Exorcist has been written. That was one of my pandemic projects. It’s not inaccurate [that it will be a sequel to the original film]. I like all the Exorcist movies," Green says. "And not only do I like them, I think they can all fall into the acceptable mythology for what I’m doing. It’s not like I’m saying, 'Pretend that The Exorcist 2 never happened.' That’s fine to exist. They’re all fine to exist, and I enjoy all of them."

There is only one sequel...Exorcist III: Legion!

Let's be honest, the first one was so ground breaking it's been imitated to death. Possession films are ten to a dozen, they need a new angle and a screenplay writer and director that has something fresh to say. William Peter Blatty wrote the original, did the screenplay so he naturally knew the material and gave us an excellent sequel, with a new angle of a detective/possession film. The Exorcism of Emily Rose did the courtroom angle well.

I'd personally leave it be, but if there is to be another I think there needs to be a mesh of genres to make it new. Plus, all possession films these days are so overblown it takes me right out of them. The original for instance, had a grounding of reality. I admit, a film involving a grown up Linda Blair/Reagan is intriguing but I don't think she'd want to do it. She seems settled.

If it's a direct sequel to the first but he's not retconning the other 2 sequels, then that tells me they are not bringing back Linda Blair.

What a waste of money. They would probably do just as well, if not better making exorcism films without the ties to a 50 year old movie. It would certainly cost them a lot less the $400 million.

Lightbulb Exorcist successor (Blumhouse | David Gordon Green)

Quote:
The casting confirms this new Exorcist trilogy won’t be a remake but a successor, similar to what Green did with John Carpenter’s Halloween. Green went on record about the film just last week. https://bloody-disgusting.com/movie/...rcist-trilogy/
Hopefully as good as the original!

Same route they used for Halloween I bet. Ignore the sequels to steal their ideas. I wonder if Regan will be a paranoid old lady living inside a self build church waiting for the big day she'll have a final confrontation with Pazuzu.

The sole point of interest is that Ellen Burstyn - excellent in the original - will be back. Nothing else in the description conjures up any excitement at all. The 1973 film is an all time Horror classic, one of the few films that truly scared me when I saw it as a kid.

What scares me today is the thought in my head that they're going to truly f**k this up. And this coming from someone who actually quite enjoyed Halloween 2018.

Linda Blair is unavailable as she's filming the sequel to Airport 1975. Since it was released in 1974 this year we're celebrating its 47th anniversary...which is special after all.

I always wanted to go to Universa Studios' Halloween Horror Nights. I really need to save up money one of these years and go.

Funny you say that. Contrary to what people believe even though 3 is used in the title of the third film it actually retcons out the second film, partly why works so well not only did William Blatty come back to produce the screenplay but the source material (Legion novel) was actually sequel to the Exorcist novel both written by William Blatty. Unlike the second film was just as original conception.

Shes coming back for this? Geesh. I still cant believe they're going to try and do this. I know, its 2021....thats what they do but still. As for ret-conning other sequels: The Heretic is laughable crap and matters not. The Exorcist 3 with George Scott always gets touted as some under-appreciated masterpiece but I found it dull and silly. C'mon. A few OK scary scenes dont carry an otherwise goofy plot or lack thereof.

I dunno. Unless some miracle occurs and this gets glowing reviews from legit sources, Ill stay away. If its just some modern day CG battle with an over-ripe Ellen Burstyn & Pazuzu though, my goodness.... no thanks.

** Can just go watch the blu-ray of the classic original **
