What was the story behind the font change? Was it for fear of legibility?

I assume those old subtitles were "burned in" the old transfer and were lost when they did the new 4K transfer. Too bad they didn't redo them for the new transfer. They look better.

Watched this tonight and was thoroughly impressed by the transfer. Deep inky blacks, rich colors, and a surprisingly tasteful use of HDR that accentuates the movie but doesn’t change it. I can't imagine this looking much better.

Sometimes when they go back to the camera negatives, they see an opportunity to allow for subtitles from various languages to be used in worldwide distribution, so they don't re-do the original opticals either digitally or photo-chemically and allow for digital replacements of the language they want instead. For home video, that means player generated subtitles. |

Raise your hand if you had (still have?) that. No need for a slipcover with LDs. Does any Blu-ray version have the commentary from the Criterion edition? |

I got it for $5 on eBay six years ago, and for six years I've been meaning to have a look at that goofy edit-a-scene supplement.

Shame if so. I know at least one instance where they kept original font for forced subs in films. And more of that - they aren't burned into the transfer and can be disabled. LOTR theatrical CEE. I wish the same was done for Dracula.
It's not critical, of course. I hate when a studio is lazy enough to burn forced subs into a transfer. Instead of adding it as a separate subs track. Disney is really great when it comes to this, not only they don't do it, they also try to keep original font, if it was used for a theatrical presentation. WB, on the other hand, never bother and it really spoils their releases for me. |

I just ordered my first 4K TV and I think this movie would be a good first one to play on it. I see from the picture posted that it has the all regions ABC logo; as a neophyte in this, that does mean the UHD is all regions too? Not just the bluray, right? I need it to play on my Australian XboneS.
