Still, I think it's safe to say it's a 2K master. The film was mostly shot in the Alexa 65's 5K 1.78 mode (framed up for 1.85), and not the 6.5K Open Gate capture.

They do mention that they specifically worked in the P3 colour space all the way through the chain, as most of the time the images as viewed on-set are piped out in Rec.709 (called "somewhat crude" by DP Jess Hall) with a basic correction LUT, which is then expanded upon in post. But here they designed the colour palette of the film to be read by the camera and to be presented as such, so on-set monitoring and the viewing of dailies were all done in proper P3 with "little or no colour correction required" during the DI grade itself.

So, even with the 2K master the Alexa 65's gorgeous imagery will still shine through on UHD and the colour should be eye-poppingly lush. We shall see....
Just wanted to say I got personal confirmation from the colorist that Ghost in the Shell had a 2k DI. I've updated IMDb.

So for the unitiated, does this all mean that PQ will be poor, fair, good, or great?

Don't mean much, really. Might look less crisp than Revenant or X-Men Apocalypse, but the vast majority of UHDs are from 2k DIs.

That's a bit disappointing. I'm sure it will still look good on UHD, but this might steer me towards getting the 3D disc instead since I've heard a lot of good things about the 3D in this.

I'm sticking with the UHD all the way, the colour was specifically designed with DCI-P3 in mind so it's going to look fabuloso I reckon.

Well now you're making things more difficult for me again.

I whish they'd just release a combo-pack for this. It would make life easier for me and my wallet.

You've seen Dr Strange. For me, the 3D was most of the fun. I found the movie itself very "meh." A UHD version might be ok but it's still flat 2D. Trying to watch it in 2D, I'd be noticing what's missing too much to enjoy it. Probably would be a similar feeling for me with Ghost so my decision is easy. And, if the digital code translates into 4K (I have no idea if it does), you'd have the best of both worlds

I feel like people know if they really value 3D or not, so it should be an easy choice. If you really love 3D and UHD and feel like you'd watch them in alternating turns, well... that sounds expensive.

Believe me, it is. I've got Best Buy's exclusive 4K SteelBook, Zavvi's 3D SteelBook, and Target's 3D Blu-ray all pre-ordered. If Paramount officially announces they are releasing a 3D version in the US, I'll cancel the Zavvi pre-order. Luckily, I had a $30 Best Buy gift card and $15 in Target gift cards to cover a majority of the cost this time.

You're not making my decisions any easier.

People say this will likely look great in UHD, and when it comes to 3D I've heard a lot of great things, but at the same time I've also read some comments that the 3D isn't all that great so it's hard to decide. Maybe I'll not pre-order this and rather wait for some actual disc reviews down the road before I make up my mind.

I'm also currently struggling to decide whether to get Underworld Blood Wars in 3D or UHD.

It sounds expensive and definitely is. I just did this for Fantastic Beasts (3D steelbook and the regular UHD) which cost me $66 put together (shipping included). Obviously I can't spend that kind of money on every release that I want to own in both 3D and UHD or I'll go bankrupt pretty soon. I need to make some tough choices. With most releases I don't find it too hard to choose, but then every now and then there comes some along (like Ghost in the Shell and Underworld BW) to really torment my mind into making a decision.

Yeah I'm glad 3D gives me a headache because it sounds like a rough choice! Not saying this to annoy you but there is the fact that 3D seems to be fading from the home, so maybe bite the bullet and get used to UHD alone? Of course then you'll do that and glasses-free 3D will launch and lure you right back again.

Home theater is a rough business!

I doubt it is the date but Walmart shows Dec 31 but they have different years on them of 2017 and 2029.

Walmart also says exclusive ones including the 4K discs & 3D.

Fading fast, and maybe will just be relegated to the overseas markets (at the very least, I hope). This would actually present less of a dilemma for me, personally. Buy 4K for the quality releases, and import the 3D if it's really worth the effort.
A future example is "The Great Wall." Loved the 3D presentation theatrically, but am sure will be satisfied with the 4k release. If the 3D is $50+ to import, I'll just skip it, and move on.

Why is 3D disappearing faster from the US market than overseas?

It's also getting less over here. A week ago I was in checking out a local store for some blu-rays on sale. They had more 4K blu-rays (which are always coming out later in Europe) than 3D blu-rays.

I saw Ghost in the Shell in 3D in the theatre and it was definitely my last 3D movie. I am looking forward to see it in 2D. No more flickering images....no need for glasses. What a relieve.
