I bought it at Fry's today for $6.99. Just put it on to check out the PQ. The one film I thought would look the worst looks the best. That is White Line Fever. Blind Fury PQ not so hot. Silent Rage from what I saw look decent enough. For $7.00 I am not to complain.

Does anyone know if Amazon will do a pricematch against itself? I had this preordered awhile back, and it was $11 something and it was delivered Tuesday. Now it's at $7.79. It's not much but it sure was nice when Best Buy refunded me the difference when I bought the Phantasm Collection in store and they dropped the price $20 within their return window.

Reports are the AU release has pretty poor PQ that is DNR'ed then EE'd but the audio is lossless. The US PQ looks to be untouched but still an older scan. It's Dolby Digital 2.0 at 384kbps.

So, for my money, being in the US and this release being so cheap, this seems to be the better option. |

I just got finished going through the blu-ray and the PQ looks fine to me.
Not razor sharp but the images looked clear to me with film grain visible but not distracting. |

I can't help but wonder how much better off these Sony titles would've been with Shout Factory if people weren't such sticklers for extras. Most of these films don't need extras and many, like The Naked Cage, have practically nothing and are perfectly serviceable. Sony typically provides excellent HD masters that would benefit from having plenty of breathing room on disc, plus I'm pretty sure Sony would at least give SF access to trailers. If SF can't get Paramount stuff my thinking is they should go for second best and make a deal with Sony, even if the studio doesn't have that large of a cult library.

I buy a movie for the movie, not the extras. All I want is for the movie I want to own is to have good (not even amazing or that pretentious sounding "definitive") picture and good sound. I dont need the director and sound director to come back and do some painstakingly long process of mastering it from the original negatives to meet the snooty expectations of some discerning videophile. I want it to look good and sound good, thats pretty much it. By not having to jam pack a blu ray with all kinds of extras means the movie comes out sooner which means I can see it sooner and then they can move onto the next blu ray and release it sooner. It also means the blu ray will be cheaper because they didnt have to go and film new material or license old material. The less expensive the movie is the more movies I can buy. Suspiria, Id rather they didnt spend a year or two doing new bonus stuff and this anal restoration which means I have to wait a long time and pay a lot more. |
