If nothing else, though, a UHD release is an excuse to go back and rescan things and make things better. So I'm looking forward to an OCN scan to hopefully give us the best Superman we'll ever likely get and some nice HDR.

Oh yeah. There will be complaints from the uninformed about Supe's grain and softness.

One of my all-time favorites movies and my single favorite comic book movie - cannot wait. A real classic.

In regards to Superman hitting UHD, I can't wait!

An extended cut of Superman Returns with the Krypton beginning intact, a new digital master with proper color grading, and a Dolby Atmos mix is the only way to go for that film. If a 35mm copy of the original cut of The Quest For Peace could be found, I'd love to have that in 4K with HDR. As for 3, just give it a good clean-up and HDR grade. The best we can hope for from 1 and 2 are the theatrical and tv versions in 4K with HDR. I can't imagine we'll ever get the extended cuts of both films on UHD unless WB really wants to go all-in and throw money at the problem.

It's surprising they are giving the first movie the royal 4K treatment, I don't think the sequels are coming anytime soon if ever...

2020/2021 would be the 40 anniversary of superman 2, 2023 for superman 3, 2027 for superman 4.

Whatever RAH sez gets absorbed by the hive mind. He gushed over Grease and they all said "wow, I'm not a fan of UHD but I'm gonna get this!", so now that he's shot down the possibility of STM ever looking better than than those creaky old Blu-rays they will naturally take that as gospel.

That movie doesn't have much of a fanbase (comparatively speaking).

Plus, Bryan Singer & Kevin Spacey are both pariahs for the forseeable future.

Superman Returns would be considered lucky to get a standard 4K re-release with the same extras as before.

Superman Returns will more than likely get a 4K release. If the Incredible Hulk can get a 4K release I'm sure Superman Returns can too. Anything that makes the studio money. The first 2 X-Men movies are coming out from Bryan Singer the pariah.

Didn’t the extended Blu-ray have slightly better picture quality according to this site? So with 4k anything is possible.

The UHD would be worthwhile even if they simply removed the teal from the last releases. Add the original audio tracks including the beefier LD audio or 70mm mix and a negative scan that should finally present an accurate rendition of the photography style which has proven rather hard to replicate on all video editions.

Please, please please let this mean the Bat-films are forthcoming. I’ve been crusading for properly timed dark transfers of 89 and Returns and a good Forever for years. Seeing the Burton films on an actual print looks like an entirely different picture because of the darkness. Returns in particular looks absolutely staggering and not at all like any video edition. And I still run my LDs for all three because they sound better. (Returns less so as the 2.0 and 5.1 sound nearly identical-but the old mix of 89 has better low end and the 2.0 Forever is far better than the 5.1)

In terms of II I don’t know if the film can ever be conformed to a single version that works because of the way the production was originally handled. I’ve long pondered over how you would fix it into a single narrative but because the Donner and Lester material are separated by time and such drastically different tones they don’t work well together. I wish they had had more time and money on the Donner cut and not felt the need to avoid theatrical footage but at the same time the film suffered terribly from the disarray on set.

With all the trouble involved with the disarray on the set, it's funny to note that some critics ranked Superman II as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, comic book movies of all time. And one of the greatest sequels. The movie got a lot of love from critics from what I remember.

I never cared for that movie. Even when I saw it in theaters. I thought the VFX were bad. Not Origins Wolverine bad, but still bad. and the whole homage to the TV show was annoying. I never liked the TV show at all.

That's true, but I would beg to differ that Superman II is one of the greatest sequels ever. That goes Empire Strikes Back. And they were both out in the same year. How anyone in that year could think Superman II is better than Empire Strikes Back had to be smoking some good sheet.

Lack of competition had lil or nothing to do with the praise. Superman II was a logical followup in the progression of Superman's story, forsaking his destiny for a chance at happiness and love and seeing just how much of a mistake it was. Realizing he cannot have it both ways, and putting aside his own wants and needs for the greater good, it resonates with us. It was powerful drama, and a heartbreaking story about love and lost, never before seen in a comic book or fantasy film. Lack of competition or not, Superman II much like its predecessor, helped grow comic book films out of adolescence. Critics and fans took notice.
