I don't know if this is a good thing or not!!? I guess I know there's nothing wrong with my disc. I hope this is one off and more discs don't give it issues. In this case it's of no real consequence. Was thinking of getting g a DV player soon and moving this one upstairs. Not many to choose from at the moment. Sony x700 I guess.

Got mine today, watched it ASAP. I'm gonna say it looks wonderful. I did see one of the really bad sky compression shots, when Pleasance arrives and looks up before the woman grabs him, but I must have missed the other one. If you look REALLY CLOSE though I think the shining mirror portal at the end has a tiny bit of compression issues, it's just barely noticeable because there's no motion like in The Fog.
Overall though? Stunning stuff. Like They Live I'm gonna say anyone but the pickiest of picky videophiles is safe to order this one. Movie is... interesting. It's not my thing really, but I love Carpenter enough to want all his stuff. It reminds me of Hellraiser a tiny bit, though more entertaining. LOVED the soundtrack though, and it's undeniably moody. |

Got to watch it last night, very happy with the disc. Watched it projected, and was expecting the worst due to the comments here on the macroblocking and compression, but overall I thought it looked great. Perhaps projecting it was a tad more forgiving, but I reckon if I hadn't been specifically looking for the issues with the sky shots (I noticed two shots, one in particular was brutal looking), they'd have breezed past me, and probably would have with anyone else watching with me.
Overall, it's a lowly lit movie for the most part, but it looked great considering. The daylight outdoor scenes near the start looked like they could have been shot yesterday, and had great depth and clarity. Movie wise, it's still a favourite, and I'm glad that this will be my go-to disc for future screenings. |

Sounds like you enjoyed it more than you did previously, at least. I think the score is up there with Halloween 3 as Carpenter/Howarth best.

I'm not really a "horror guy" outside the big 80's franchises, but I love Carpenter's style so much pretty much everything he does is worth owning. Still need to get Village of the Dammed but I hear that transfer is horrible. |

I saw this tonight and was overall happy. I noticed the dip in compression here and there, but it wasn't too bad. I did notice a weird flicker a couple of times though. It was especially bad the first time the priest and the Birack inspect the green orb the first time. I watched in Dolby Vision with my Oppo on my LG OLED.
The sound was really good though in 2.0 24 bit. Whenever I start watching this film I always thinks it is a bit slow, but I forget all that when I really starts going. There are some really weird and wonderful ideas in this! |

Finally watched this last night in Dolby Vision. Overall very very happy. Superior to the Fog in a couple ways. Some minor darkness here and there. The macroblocking was far less noticeable than the Fog. No Minecraft squares.
As some have mentioned there are still some macroblocking shots when looking at the sky. Three in total when switching back from DV to HDR10. 1st when Wong looks up at the sky, 2nd Cooper, 3rd Pleasence. On HDR10 they are all clearly worse. The 3rd shot is the most cleaned up on DV. Soundtrack wise I was very happy. I have more respect than ever for the soundtrack. Strong with deep base. A couple other tidbits. I had a minor lip sync issue that I had to adjust for while watching this one through the soundbar. Halloween is the only other. Both fixable just annoying. The extras disc would not play on the Panasonic using the top menu trick. It wouldn't even give me a "wrong region" message. Going to play with this further. (Even my Blu ray burner had a hard time playing this) Fun to watch once I finally got it to play. The main disc itself takes a bit longer to start, but plays fine. My friend owns this release and was tempted to get it, but unless it drops in price I am hoping for a Arrow quality release or a UHD at this point(it being a Sony release...PLEASE GOD). One of my fav's from Carpenter.

I wouldn't be too surprised if Sony was quietly working on an UHD. Hell, "Christine" came out of left field for an UHD so anything is possible.
