Though the transfer no doubt has some compression issues. I just think this particular shot, and maybe a few others, didn't really survive the SDR conversion intact. It looks fine on an HDR tv. |

Hmm, I wonder if the UHD is actually based on a 4K scan at all. If this is 35 mm the UHD should feature a finer grain structure than the german disc (same master) and I am not sure if this is what I am seeing.
Did they expicitely tell if this is based on a 4K scan? Because for the Fog and They live they did? Can we think that StudioCanal would surprise us with an an upscale? https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=3&x...0&l=0&i=0&go=1 https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=3&x...2&l=0&i=2&go=1 It's not that StudioCanal were the first to ship HD or 2K material on an UHD disc. I am looking at you Bourne movies... Last edited by Amano; 10-28-2018 at 03:00 PM. |

I think that the grain structure is the only thing that can be compared which wouldn't be impacted by the color space conversion.
Other 35mm titles from the same scan show significantly finer grain: https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=2&x...9&l=0&i=1&go=1 (to be fair, Spielberg probably had the much better film stock) |

Color space no, dynamic range yes. How bright/dark a section of the image is certainly impacts grain. Most of caps-a-holic's UHD images suck for seeing grain in skies and whatnot.

So you suggest that the grain is actually finer than shown on Capsaholic?

It's not that so much as the mediocre StudioCanal compression robbing the UHD of some of that grainy texture seen on the BD. Give them fine grain, like on They Live, and their encoder's pretty good, but give them anything with coarser, chunkier grain and it just can't handle it.

I took my own screenshot with MadVR and got even worse results than they did - so it's pretty clear MadVR's SDR conversion needs a lot of work or a lot of user tweaking to get right. Is there a better way to do the SDR conversion?

It's also very important not to confuse grain structure with edge enhancement.
Additionally both of those caps are scenes with optical effects (the castle) and speed ramping (the reversed smoke) which I believe could also impact the quality of final image. |

Starting to wonder about the lack of an amazon preorder for this.
