So despite what someone else speculated, Kline did not grade the film

Everyone will have their preferences regardless, but I certainly trust what Criterion did using a print from Universal as their reference. Prints can be dodgy, but I've seen many archival 35mm prints provided by Universal themselves to various revival theaters around the LA area and I can confidently say nobody takes better care of their prints than Universal. I think it's safe to assume the print they sent Criterion was as close to pristine as possible.

Found this article from American Cinematographer about Nicola Pecorini shooting “Fear and Loathing.” Originally published in May 1998. Interesting read.

Thanks for sharing. Here's some interesting info about some of the colors used in the film:

Quote:
We did a lot of tests, mainly with Roscolux and CalColor gels.” Key selections included Roscolux fire (#19), gold rush (20), pistachio (92), chocolate (99), walnut (156), follies pink (344) and Italian blue (370), as well as CalColor red (4660) and pink (4890).
And discussing the controversial teal scene:

Quote:
“The latitude [of the 93] really helped us on this show when we were filming scenes in the Mint Hotel suite, because those sequences were extremely dark. I was using minimal lighting and heavy-duty colored gels on the lights — three full Italian blues. A single Italian blue takes away two stops, so we were taking away six; the light that was coming through was nothing. I was exposing at T2.5, and it would read as an error on my meter! The highlights were almost one stop underexposed, so the lowlights were about three stops underexposed. But we still had the actors’ eyes”
This is Roscolux "Italian Blue" (370)

That’s very specific information, and it’s from 1998.

Appears to support the Criterion look rather than what Gilliam approved later on for the Blu-ray.

This film was released in an era when some films were receiving some interesting tuning to the picture. SEVEN and THREE KINGS are couple of those films from off the top of my head.

I don't claim to remember what this film looked like on release but like those other 2 films this one had a look to it.

I think Mifune has found some great information so a thanks goes to him.

Hi Brian81, this is because the movie came out in 1998! Hope that clears some things up. Have a lovely day!

Having just rewatched the Arrow UHD, the drug convention scene definitely has teal in it but signals more towards a deeper blue because of the magenta the overall grade has, but I can still clearly see the teal in that scene. You really need to pick a disc and see them in motion (or both) it doesn't exactly look like the caps here when viewed in HDR. For example the desert scenes or the Mint race scenes on the Arrow look fooking majestic with the magenta grade, the rusts and dust colors just leap off the screen to me, I can't find anything I hate about this grade. With that said, I would love to see the Criterion disc, but not arsed to play musical chairs on this release.

As Geoff always says - moving target.

People put way too much stock in these supervised and approved labels. The fact is, Terry Gilliam supervised and approved previous releases, he supervised and approved the current Criterion release and if he supervises and approves another release next year, it'll look different again. The 'which is right?' debate is something of an exercise in futility. Pick whatcha like and roll with it.

MifuneFan quoted some very good evidence for that scene in particular and the colour choices made during production. notops made a great point about Criterion using a Universal 35mm print for reference on this release too. That leads me to believe the Criterion grade and restoration can be trusted, at least as much as any previous release, and perhaps more. Of course, I agree that to each his own, and everyone can keep/enjoy whatever release they prefer, but there isn't really room at this point for the argument that this latest Criterion release is "revisionist" or "inaccurate".

Yeah, I get that and it's good that they've used a print for reference rather than Terry Gilliam's seemingly Dean Cundey-esque memory....but again, there's the moving target element. If you take a look at five different prints of different ages etc.... you'll likely have five different targets.

Nice research! Pretty much seals the deal that Criterion has the most accurate grade. Glad I sold my Arrow LE while the demand was still high.
