ok,,, i have been convinced thank you tom cruise......
not really knowing the diference between dolby digital and DTS... I will have to do some more reading...

I just finished watching war of the worlds..... now I know what ALL the excitement was over... I was missing a huge portion of the movie before.... I couldnt believe what I was hearing,,,,
tried to get the wife involved,,,, instead she gave me this weird look

the PA-120's are truly a great purchase,, even without the rcvr at my 75dB reference it still played loudly and deep... cant imagine playing these scenes at near reference levels.... just insane... although I might give it a try on monday..lol

I think someone may have blown my sub... Kids turning it on and off while in use and I think there is a major issue with the AA, so I may go this route.. I don't know, we will see what the wife'll let me do... I am so so fustrated.
Volume/gain- same thing in this case. I have the gain up to about 5.5/6- just a hair past 50%. I can certainly give it more if I want. I have the crossover all the way up on the sub so that my receiver will do that duty, and have the LPF of LFE set at 120hz.

As jaejw1 said- I think it does pretty well. Honestly, when I listen to music, I typically have it as more "background" sound while I'm doing something, so I rarely crank it. However, during movies I play it decently loud- in both cases, music to me sounds great. I feel I have integrated it very well into my setup, where it's definitely there but isn't overpowering. If I felt it was coming in too much on higher hz LFE passages (80-120hz) I'd simply adjust my LPF of LFE setting to 100 or 80. For movies, it does great- I love the feel and sound of the bass from this sub.

I think it's a great sub for the money, obviously. I've been tempted lately to try and find room for a second one- moreso cuz I'd love one than because I feel I need it.

Honestly, if you're looking for a replacement sub and don't want to break the bank, personally I don't think you need to look further. Otherwise, step up to a Hsu, SVS or eD. Those'll cost you 2x as much or more.

WOW... just played about 20-30 seconds of it.. just the start of the lightning strikes to the part where they ran into the house..

master volume at -21dB my fiirst test was done at -30db master volume..

matched reference of test tone 75dB is at master volume -16dB

wow.. what a kick in the chest that was..
460bux worth of subs.. and they played beautifully with no chuf, fart, burp or bottoming..

i think im gonna tray the street scene next week... playing it this loud brought the neighbors outside wondering what was going on..

with my first test with master volume at -30dB,,,,, still 14dB below my 75dB matched reference...... already 98dB was loud enough everything sounded great and no stress on the subs.... gain on subs are both at 6 and are -15dB adjusted

lightning strikes were measured at 85dB at the begining and hit its hardest at 98dB right before they ran into the house

Default I WAS looking at the AA HD-Sub12...

until someone (name withheld by My decision ) told me about these. I remember seeing them (Aramis' HT Pics) & thinking, "Wow, those are freakin' Gorgeous looking!" with the nice piano black top & design. Not Too much different style wise than the AA's really. Similar specs but reading the thread back a few pages, & for just a few $$$ more ($229 here) than the AA's (anywhere from $170+ for the AA HD-Sub12's), I'd like to see what anyone has to say.

These seem to be made a bit stronger as well - again, going back a few pages here - with similar Specs:

12˝ Premium Grade Titanium Color Subwoofer Cone
• Heavy-Duty Amp 200 watts RMS, 650-watts peak
' 60 pounds of thunderous bass
• High power magnet
• 24Hz - 200Hz (+/- 3dB)
• Black Lacquer Top & Bottom - * (looking to get a Black one) *
• Adjustable crossover and volume control
• Auto On/Off switch
• 5 Year Warranty Woofer, 2 Year Warranty Amp
• RCA inputs
• 17˝ H x 15˝ W x 18-1/4˝ D

What can I say? I still love my sub. The piano black has a couple minor scratches on it (I think my daughter must've sat on it at some point) that are only visible when you study it. There's no cheap plastic anywhere, and the black cabinet looks natural and well-made. The build is still very solid, and it still seriously thumps. I can feel it on good LFE soundtracks (like Knowing, for instance.

If you're stretching your budget just to get one, then it's perfect. If you can go $100 more (I couldn't) then I'd seriously recommend looking at eD and Hsu's offerings. However, that's not to downplay this sub. It's the one component I'm not really looking to upgrade at all anytime soon.

Sounds good, thanks. As I noted, for the $30-40 extra, it isn't too much more to me for this one & I've read back thru the pages so I know it is a very good performer (Driver King & I think Big Daddy also give this one props).

The build quality of the box impresses me as well, over on the avs forum there are some pics of this thing taken apart. Also can't remember Aramis might have reposted in this thread too. I have never regretted my purchase of this sub. It performs really well imo.

Cool - I see you & Aramis both have just the 1 Sub - It Almost makes me about what it'll do with my POLK PSW-10 (complimentary really) Sub, & the fact that I have one of them up on an End table; since you both Rave about this & yours is on the carpet only (no riser) & I think Aramis' is as well. Either way (AA HD-Sub12 or the PA-120) I go, i'm sure I'll be all upon my 1st weeks' listenings...

** (EDIT: Do you both have Polyfill in your Subs? Prob. a dumb question, right? ) **

Yeah I grabbed the pics from there and rehosted them here so it wouldn't kill his bandwidth. Offer still stands to pull them if they care, but no one's ever complained. They're nice shots of the interior.

I have mine on a Auralex Subdude to minimize boominess in the basement and upstairs. I feel that it definitely helps there. It may tighten up the bass some as well, but honestly I don't feel it's a significant change. I was already completely happy with the sound though. As far as Polyfill- nah, personally I don't mess with that. BD took a look at the pics and said it probably doesn't need it anyway. I suppose you could but I'm not into taking things apart that work fine.

The AA sub looks nice as well (cherry finish especially) but I overall prefer the look of the PA. I also have yet to see any complaints as to the build quality or sound overall either here or at AVS so I don't feel alone in saying it's a good sub for the money.

Ditto on the SubDude, I have the same thing. First was just that, then I bought the End table & put them both On TOP of that (the woofer is about 23" off the floor now!). With the 'Dude alone, I DID notice improvement from the Sub (w/the polyfill---the PSW-10's def. benefit from that). With the Sub & SubDude on the table, it was like Nite & Day! Incredible sounding but obviously, for some of the Noted Warhorse LFE Demo-like Blu's (Dark Knight, Hulk, Iron Man, & the rest of the "Usual Suspects"), it was almost crying UNCLE!! I'd jump up & turn it down for fear of it blowing out or doing some type of damage. Hence, the Latest bout with Upgrade-itis for a New IMPROVED Sub.

And Yes, the CHERRY AA Sub is freakin' Sweet looking, no doubt. - As for your Polyfill info, good to know. I'll just put whichever one I buy (now leaning a bit more toward the PA-120) on the SubDude & Table, & do the Hospital Explosion scene from TDK, part of the HULK, etc., to see how it sounds. I don't "mind" adding the Polyfill to speakers that seem to need it, but if they sound good when I get them set-up, all the better!

I absolutely love my PA-120. I just recently bought the AA Sub12 and like it as well. The build quality on the PA-120 is just downright better....period. The amp looks to be better quality, the cabinet is better quality, and the looks are way better as well. The AA is definately louder and goes lower. That's the only reason I bought the AA instead of another PA. It was lined all the way around with polyfill, has internal bracing and can really be loud as well in the higher 50-80 hz area. For the money both subs are a fantastic deal. If AA would have been out when I went to buy one then I'd bought another PA without hesitation at all. I hope I've confused you further Aerodude.

- Lmao - You did NOT go There! Thanks, I think. Geeessshhh. Now that I've found one person with BOTH, who gives me pros & cons for each; i'm that much more confused a bit. Who's next?!

I caught some of the pics on page 1 I believe of this thread from Aramis' reposts as you mentioned. Very nicely made, I will agree. Sent out an email & their Ebay store might be getting some of the BLACK ones in stock in 2-3 weeks. Seems they only have them in CHERRY right now (link below).

Hi,
I was looking on your Ebay site and don't see any available in Black - any idea when those might be available? Thank you for your time.

Thanks aramis109, duneaholic, Aerodude73, jaejw1, and D1-2005 (Did I miss anyone? oh yes, BD too!) for posting your findings on the PA-120.

I need a new sub to replace my Titanic 1200. After reading your posts and those in the official AA thread and the official ED thread, I narrowed down my choices to the ED A3-300, PA-120, and the AA HD-SUB12.

I just placed an order for a Premier Acoustic PA-120, cherry finish, from Amazon for $229.00 shipped.

The PA-120 is internally braced and better built, and I think it looks better than the AA HD-SUB12 in cherry finish anyway. The lower extension of the cheaper HD-sub 12 or the more expensive ED A3-300 made them worthy contenders. However I feel the PA-120 is a good compromise between those two. The PA-120 is better built like the ED-A3-300 but smaller and cost $100 less. Specs aren't everything. Quality matters too.

Armis109, I am happy to say that you can add me to the list of Premier Acoustic sub owners.

Edit: Of course there will be pics in my gallery, which will not only include my new PA-120 but also my new 52 in. Sony Bravia.

Just checked UPS tracking info for my PA 120 sub:

In Transit - On Time
Scheduled Delivery Date:08/19/2009
Shipped To: FLAGSTAFF, AZ, US
Shipped/Billed On: 08/17/2009
Type: Package
Service: GROUND
Weight: 41.00 Lbs

LAS VEGAS, NV, US 08/18/2009 7:46 A.M. DEPARTURE SCAN
LAS VEGAS, NV, US 08/17/2009 9:09 P.M. ORIGIN SCAN
US 08/17/2009 9:42 A.M. BILLING INFORMATION RECEIVED

The shipping weight doesn't seem right. This sub is supposed to weigh 50 to 60 lbs! How can it weigh only 41 lbs?

Can't wait until tomorrow! It better be the PA-120!

** EDIT: I just clicked on the EBAY link above from my post on 8/12 -- Weight: 56 pounds each - so that 40lbs. thing is definitely "interesting" to say the least! **

Meh, those guys had the weight weird on mine too. I think it was billed as 41lbs as well. I can't remember how much mine actually weighs- I didn't care to stick it on some scales, but it's solid.

I need to update the OP and put you guys on there. (Along with everyone else).

*edit* Updated the OP with owner names. Aero, if and when you order this thing, let me know. Same goes with everyone else. Pics would be good too!
