It's been mentioned before, but all the bonus material that is supposedly only available to stream via BDLive, are actually on the disc, hidden away!

The only problem is that those contents are inaccessible. Now, if Disney just gives a key via BDLive to watch the stuff instead of having it streamed, problem solved.
This is true. I bought a rental copy of How to Train Your Dragon not realizing that everything was locked. I popped it in one day and sddenly all the other features were unlocked.

How to get Disney to do that is a mystery though.

Well that's crazy. So why did they require BD-Live in order to access the special features if they're on the disc?

But why not just have the special features on the disc or an extra disc. Why go through BD-Live?

Data collection -- they want to monitor what people do.

Essentially, Disney wants to know if it's worth the bother creating certain types of Bonus Features. They're aware that there are adults who really care about behind-the-scenes production stuff, but if the vast majority of people won't ever watch those featurettes, Disney has no incentive to produce them in the first place.

Just look at what happened with The Avengers -- a pathetic amount of Bonus Features, especially when compared to the feature-length documentaries for Iron Man and Iron Man 2.

Using the cloud was cheaper than printing the additional discs. When it comes down to it, the average buyer will not care that the extra special features are locked on the disc. At most, they're going to look for the deleted scenes and maybe the music videos (which Disney wisely kept on the disc). So they used the BD-Live/Virtual Vault to save a quick buck, because only a select minority would actually complain about it.

That and, as Ernest Rister theorized in the past, it can keep the enthusiasts from pawning off their old DVD sets.

My Blockbuster is shutting down and has copies of Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 previously viewed for $9.99 each. Should I jump on it at that price?

The extra features WERE on the disc, only hidden. There would have been NO "additional discs" to print; the menu to make them visible almost certainly would have taken less disc space than the BD-Live client. Doing what they did was more expensive then either disc-only or cloud-only extras.

+1, not to mention Fantasia seems to be the one title kept in the Disney Vault closest to Walt's cryogenically-preserved head.

yeah, this is why I hated the idea of virtual vault from the beginning and stopped selling my Disney DVDs. We are at the mercy of the studio this way. Unfortunately for me, I sold my 3-disc Fantasia DVD set before I found out about the virtual vault, so I lost all those extras.
The Snow White Blu-ray was so good that I was comfortable selling all of my DVDs at that time. I really regret doing lot of them now

darn

i don't think i ever got a chance to watch the bonus stuff before it was taken away.

couldn't this be grounds for some kind of class action suit? did disney willfully advertise the bonus features on the case? or use it as a point of interest to get us to buy the blu-ray? they should keep the bonuses available for the long haul! i can't see it taking that much bandwidth and/or space....

The a/v quality is through the roof. Just crazy good.

Everything else about the set was bizarre...including the limited four month release window.
