And most (actually, I think all) of the big X-Files fans I've known throughout my life have been gay guys, so while I understand you were alluding to fans of that show being virgins, I thought that made it even more amusing. Gave it a sort of double meaning.

I love everything about this film except for Shelley Duvall. I’m not sure if she is a terrible actress or it was just her performance in this film. When ever she is on screen I cringe.

Apparently Kubrick shared your sentiment. They had a VERY difficult time working together with Kubrick often berating Duvall due to her inability to give him what he wanted performance wise.

I wonder why Kubrick persisted with her then? Had they have replaced her with a better actress I would absolutely consider this film a masterpiece. It still is close though IMO.

Duvall adds to the unhinged atmosphere, it just wouldn't be the same with another actress.

I feel anyone turned-off by Duvall just doesn't get it, or are more in-tuned with by the book performances and/or convenient expected "Hollywood looks."

She's against-the-grain radiant in so many ways and when ppl don't get it the world is a lil bit sadder.
