You've made your preference for CGI quite clear in many threads. Some of us just disagree. I wouldn't at all be surprised if it depends on when you were growing up.

Watched my copy this afternoon and it looks and sounds wonderful, just what a blu-ray should be.
The mosasaurus first scene gave me chills, it looks terrific. Can't wait for JW II, it's going to be awesome, i'm sure.

This may sound incredible to you, but I don't have a preference either way.

Practical effects can look as good as the real deal, and so can CG.

It's just that I don't demonize one craft over another simply because it's CG or practical.

There are many scenes in all three JP movies were the differences are inconceivable, and can only be guessed when you know what the limitations of practical effects are, such as a running raptor.

I grew up in the 80s, so CG wasn't exactly flourishing at the time.
There are several mid to late 80s movies, where the VFX were pretty seamless.

It can be anything, which is its advantage.

When the Raptor is running towards Tim in the Kitchen in JP, it's a suit worn by John Rosengrant who also wore another hydraulics controlled leg for fracturing Udesky's spine in JPIII. Of course wide shots showing walking or running have to be CGI. But the CG in the original trilogy blended much better, sometimes indistinguishably so in the first three films, especially in JP3 in the Raptor scenes where the animatronic models shared the same space with their CGI versions. The good thing about the CGI in the first three is that they did not have the smoothness and the shiny quality that the CG in Jurassic World has. This smoothness is in direct contrast to how animals look in the wild, i.e, their skins are more rough and dirty. Plus there's something "off" about the way the CG creatures move in most of the scenes in JW which adds to the "fake" feel.

As for the Mosasaurus, it looks very fake in the first scene (grabbing the shark) with no discernible heaviness of weight in the creature as it rises out of the water. Same with the introduction of the Raptors - look at how they cock their head when Owen is training them; where is the sense of weight; a feeling of heaviness?? They only look good towards the end of the film.

I thought the worst scenes featuring CGI raptors were 2 scenes that come to mind in Jurassic Park III. The first being when the group runs out of the visitor's center and the trapped raptor escapes and runs down the steps. It just looks so bad in my opinion.

The other scene is in the climax where the group hear the ocean and are headed for the beach and the raptors come out of the bushes and surround them. Their movements just look incredibly cartoonish, as does the scene when they run off having retrieved their missing eggs.

Is the bonus content from Target worth getting? Also how are people putting the tins on their shelves?

I do not know how you can say those scenes look worse. ALL the Raptor scenes in Jurassic Park III were incredibly realistic and blended very well with the animatronics, with the background plates and everything else. I found the two scenes you mentioned to be the most realistic. Never felt fake to me at least! No other Jurassic park movie, in my opinion was as realistic in the portrayal, performance. look and realism of the "Raptors" as Jurassic Park III. The original warm colour timing (not present in the BD, which is blue tinted) helped a lot as well.

I bought the PAL DVD (with the usual 4% speed-up issue) as Universal does not sell NTSC discs here in India. It's a two disc edition (not available in US). The second disc has all the Target exclusives and all of them are available at youtube in much poor quality. Here are the pics -

DSC_0305.jpg

Disc 1 however does not contain all the other features from the BD (except 'Chris & Colin Take on the World' and 'Deleted Scenes').

This two disc edition is available as NTSC Reg 3 DVD in amazon.com and, the same disc as mine in ebay.co.uk .

I got it for Rs 459 ($ 6.94) including shipping. Original price is Rs 599 ($ 9.06).

The extras are ok. Look them up on youtube.

But the sole reason I have never re-watched Apocalypse Now is because they shot a real animal being killed. I also learned that John Wayne got a lot of horses and other wild animals like elephants, rhinos killed just to create those shots for his movies.
No way. Lost a lot of respect for John Wayne.

It depends. If you are a Michael Giacchino fan, the Target exclusive has a feature focused on the sound design and the score (which Giacchino does a excellent job at).

I thought it was a decent bonus disc, and a worthy retailer exclusive. It will be included in some of the regular 2D editions sold at Target on BF.

It basically includes clips of danger from all four films. From the Blu-Ray.com review:
