I'm glad to see the interest in this movie, even from the "johnny come lately" crowd. IMO there are very few movies that can approach the concept and execution of the original Fantasia, especially as an animated feature and I'm always pleased to see a new generation appreciate it. I've owned this title in VHS, DVD and now Blu and each release seems to get a bit better so I don't mind the triple dip. This movie actually introduced my daughter to classical music when she was four and it remains one of her favorite Disney movies to date. It seems trite to say that "they don't make 'em like that anymore," but in this case it isn't just hyperbole. It's really a shame though, how Disney cycles their titles for release with many years between re-releases. I'm sure it's to retain its bloated, artificially high pricing structure through pent-up demand.

Just watched the original again last weekend and I'm still amazed at how good this transfer looks and sounds considering its age. There's still some weirdness with the audio panning effects, but considering this was the first commercial film to use a stereo audio track, you have to give it kudos to how well it came off. I can still find new nuggets of greatness with this film even though I've seen it countless times and it still captivates my young daughter whose seen it at least seven or eight times. Disney's restoration for blu really shows respect for the source material. I hope the same holds true for the upcoming Mary Poppins movie, which is arguably Disney's best live action film (with animation, of course) IMO.

Considering Disney is going to mount an Oscar campaign for SAVING MR. BANKS, I have little concern over the mastering of MARY POPPINS. It's essentially a part of the Oscar marketing strategy at this point.

quickdraw's image is the best ...

I remember hearing from Don Hahn himself at a screening of 'Waking Sleeping Beauty' that 'The Little Match Girl' was supposed to be on this release, but it wasn't included.

wondering if the upcoming 'Little Mermaid' blu will have it, since it makes sense that both are Hans Christian Anderson stories.

I didn't know this had come out on Blu-ray already. Is there a chance they'll bring it out again as a "Second chance" kind of thing?

I really am tempted to pick it up for those exorbitant prices, because who knows how much more expensive they will get in even a couple months?

Really want these films. I adored Fantasia 2000, and Fantasia is of course a classic. Any advice on picking these up for a price less than $60? I saw that there's an eBay listing for a foreign one and it claims All Regions, but I'm not sure if I should trust that...

The Fantasia films are region free everywhere and they were never discontinued in Europe. I would import it from one of the European amazon-sites. Just figure out, where it is the cheapest including shipping. You also don't have to create a new account, if you already have one on amazon.com.

You can get it for about $37,40 from amazon.fr (including shipping to the US)!

I have the UK versions and they are region free. No need to worry.
Definitely the cheaper option.

And seeing as 2015 will be the 75th anniversary of Fantasia, (and kind of the 15th Anniversary of Fantasia 2000)
I'm sure they will re-release them on their own in celebration.

So it's not toooo long of a wait.

eBay has the North American version all the time many still sealed, so if you want it, you just have to be a little patient. I've seen a couple of auctions for new ones that have been south of 30 bucks, but you can often find them for the original retail price.

Given that Sleeping Beauty is already getting a new release (with a nearly perfect original Blu), it would not surprise me if Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 get Diamond Edition re-releases. Just including the extras in proper form instead of low resolution streaming, including the original audio, and maybe offering the 1947 cut as a seamless branched option would be enough.
