Last movie I watched was the blu-ray of Oldboy. Took a chance on it from Amazon as it was only $8.99. Now it's over $30.
The movie is a strange and twisted tale of revenge from a man who was imprisoned in a room for 15 years. It's not for everyone and has some moments that will stay with me. I will not forget this Vietnamese film for some time to come. I will think about it and it's themes for quite awhile.
PQ was pretty good and so was the audio. There is a standard dvd of extras which I haven't had a chance to watch yet.

Ok thats Thor, but who is the actor playing Thor? Also I was reading a review of Saving Private Ryan which I preordered. Why do I not remember you in the film? Saw your name in the credits.

Old Boy is one of the few films I have seen in my life where after viewing it I honestly do not know if I liked it or not. Strange film. Maybe I need to watch it again?

An Education (blu)

PQ: 4 stars (out of 5)

AQ: 4 stars (out of 5)

Film: 3 stars (out of 4)

Mulligan's performance undoubtedly deserved her Oscar nom. Her performance was of great maturity throughout the entirety of the film. She will definitely be big in the years to come. However, I think Alfred Molina put forth the best performance in the film. To me, he absolutely should have gotten a supporting actor Oscar nom.--he was incredible.

Overall, I thought the film was very good but would not have been nominated had there been 5 nominees. That being said, it was far better than D9 and is on par with Avatar. The Hurt Locker is much better though.

My main issue with the film is its themes. To me, not a single theme really translated throughout the movie and none was effectively conveyed. After it ended, I wondered to myself what exactly the point of the film was, which is never a good thing. Yes, it has a similar vibe to Lolita, but there was a very definite thematic point behind that book and Kubrick's film version. Here, I just didn't feel it.

Recommended.

Wow, I can't believe I just seen someone admit this. Probably the worst thing I have heard in years.

Human Centipede 8.25/10

Caught this on IFC in Theaters On Demand last night. I have really been wanting to see this, but I was worried it would turn into a Hostel/Saw torture porn type movie, especially since I hate all the Saw movies and Hostel as well. I was very worried due to the first 15-20 minutes of the film since the acting is very bad, but once the doctor comes into play, it gets much, much better. The actor that played the doctor could be one of the more memorable villains I have seen in a horror movie in quiet some time. Also, the movie reminded me of old school Cronenberg (i.e. Dead Ringers). I thought the movie was very original and enjoyed it. It's a lot better than probably 95% of the horror movies that do come out (cough, cough Nightmare remake). Yes, there are some very sick moments in the movie, but I have seen much worse. So, i'm glad it didn't overstay it's welcome when it came to the subject of gore.

Knowing (picked it up for $6.99 used at Blockbuster!)

Film: 3.5/5 (I really really want to love this film, but something is lacking, i just can't put my finger on what it is. Cage's sister is a HORRIBLE casting job, the actress is just horrid. good thing its just a minor role. I like how Proyas leaves it open-ended, for discussion, particularly on
[Show spoiler] whether the viewer wants to view the end from an alien/scientific/rationalistic perspective or an angel/spiritual/intuitive perspective. i'm more inclined to the latter, but often struggle to force an overlap = its both.
. also, GREAT color palette (only brown and blue throughout the whole film!!), best use of palette since The Fountain. why can't more directors do this? much easier and flows better to view, for the audience.

PQ and AQ: both 5/5, this is a reference blu-ray, when looking at combined PQ/AQ. a stunner. Up there with Kong (2005)

Great review and it somewhat mirrors my opinion, though
[Show spoiler]is see them as alien/scientific/rationalistic that was seen as angels early in our human history.

I think my problem is the black stones
[Show spoiler]I was dissapointed that they were nothing but Hansel and Gretel kind of thing, thought the stones had more importance
and Cage's neverending depression.

Great review and I feel exactly the same as you do. I really wanted to like the film and it had in place a great set-up, but I felt it was lacking. Like you, I'm not exactly sure what my main issue is. I appreciated the darkness of the film but I think it got to be a bit hokey, which while expected for this sort of movie, crossed the line for me.

I think you make an excellent point about the ending. And I think the AQ is a perfect 5 but give the PQ a 4.5 because while it's fantastic in the action scenes, it didn't pop with depth and clarity the way King Kong or Australia did. Of course, that's not exactly a fair assessment since those two films had much more color to work with.
