I'll just say this... if you like good movies, then do yourself a favor and get "Repulsion."

Seriously, though, if you've seen any other Roman Polanski movies like "Rosemary's Baby," "The Tenant," or "The Ninth Gate" then I can't see why you wouldn't enjoy "Repulsion."

I LOVE good movies. Well I forced my dad to take my to Barnes and Noble today 20 minutes before they close and I convinced him to buy El Norte. So now I have two Criterion Blus. But the sale ends tomorrow. Hopefully I can go again and pick up some more titles.

But I have never seen any of Roman Polanski's films. Maybe Repulsion is a good place to start.

To me, "Repulsion" is very psychological. I see a lot of people that throw around the word 'horror' with this movie, but I've never felt that way about it. For me, it's more or less a breakdown of the mind. Plus, in 1965 Catherine Deneuve was quite the pleasure to look at.

alright, this is everything I bought on the criterion sale between dvds at barnes and noble and blu-rays at amazon

deep breath. first in order of spine # (since that's how I have them written down) and then the last 6 I ordered last night.

seven samurai, the lady vanishes, amarcord, salo, m, nights of cabiria, the 39 steps, the passion of joan of arc, l'avventura, rififi, withnail and i, rashomon, 8 1/2, bob le flambeur, solaris, down by law, contempt, tokyo story, le cercle rouge, la strada, naked lunch, a story of floating weeds, stray dog, videodrome, my own private idaho, l'eclisse, jules and jim, le samurai, ran, la jatee / sans soleil, symbiopsychotaxiplasm, bicycle thieves, if...., stranger than paradise, night on earth, mala noche, breathless, this sporting life, two-lane blacktop, time bandits, wild strawberries, the rules of the game, phantom of liberty

and for blu-ray
the 400 blows, the wages of fear, the man who fell to earth, the last emperor, el norte, the last metro, in the realm of the senses, last year at marienbad, repulsion

so I now have all the blu-ray releases with the next couple pre ordered, and I had 9 or 10 criterion dvds before this sale (dazed and confused, band of outsiders, chasing amy, slacker, fear and loathing, silence of the lambs, brazil, rushmore, the life aquatic, the royal tenenbaums)
and a few of the blu-ray (the seventh seal, for all mankind, the third man, bottle rocket, chungking express, the curious case of benjamin button)

and that's that. a longer post than necessary but I wanted to put a big stamp on the end of this. spent a lot of money obviously but it's money I hadn't spent for the last 6 months because I've been very specific with my blu-ray purchases, and I haven't bought a dvd in that time. worth the wait, if I was more in the mode I was in last year I wouldn't have had the money to enjoy this sale.

Wow, you did some extensive purchasing! But I have a question. Of all the Blurays, which one do you recommend the most? I already have El Norte and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and am looking to purchase The Third Man and The Last Emperor. I would like some advice on what else to buy. I have already seen The Man Who Fell to Earth and didn't like it at all.

I also noticed that you listed The Silence of the Lambs and was wondering if you or anyone else had any idea as to which version would be best to buy? The versions I'm referring to are the Criterion version, the Collector's edition, or the Bluray version.

Well, the Criterion version is out-of-print, Andy, so you might have trouble finding it. Plus, the Criterion version of "The Silence of the Lambs" is non-anamorphic, so if you're watching it on a widescreen tv the image is going to be pictureboxed (black bars on all four sides), unless you zoom in on the picture, which would be a travesty.

I currently have the most recent blu-ray release, but it has its issues, as well, because I'm pretty sure it used an earlier "inferior" transfer of the film.

Not sure of your age, Andy, but my Criterion blu-ray suggestions for you would probably be "Bottle Rocket," "The Wages Of Fear," "The 400 Blows," or "Chungking Express" based on the fact that it already sounds like you're gonna get "The Third Man" and "The Last Emperor."

Thanks for the advice! I guess I'll just wait until another version comes along on bluray. But even if I had decided to buy the Criterion version I'm sure I could have found a copy on eBay.

Well I'm a pretty young movie goer, 16, but I have yet to meet someone in person who has a bigger passion for movies than I do. I'm planning on becoming an actor as my future career. But thanks again for the advice, I truly appreciate it!

Are you still thinking about trying to make it out to Barnes & Noble today and pick yourself up a copy of "Repulsion" on blu-ray? Since we were talking about it last night, I didn't throw it in my list of suggestions for you, but, obviously, you should get it.

Honestly, I'm not sure about "A Night To Remember." I'd like to find out, myself. It was #7 on Criterion's DVD releases, so I really can't imagine that it is anamorphic.

Thanks, still gonna pick it up,I can finally repalce that old VHS of it. Hands down the best movie about the Titanic! Thinking also on picking up "Kind Hearts & Coronets" but not sure how much of an improvement it is since I have the Anchor Bay DVD that came with my Alec Guinness Collection, which has a great transfer. I guess the biggest difference is in the extras.
