There's a search bar at the top of the page so you can find any movies, but no it isn't.

Its pretty funny actually. My cousin should have been an entertainer. He does great impersonations and can really work an audience...he has a very special charisma and killer comedic timing.

He adds his own subtle and whimsically delivered narrative while watching the movie and it'll put you into stiches. He'll make fun of the acting, plot holes, camera work...everyting. Gutbusting stuff. The worse the movie, the better his schtick.

My boredom last night overrode my hesitation to see this based on early feedback. This is not the total turd some are making it out to be. People who claim so are not positioning themselves honestly on the spectrum of crap-fantastic movies. There’s a lot to like, but there’s a lot missing.

What’s to like? The movie is visually stunning. It nailed a pure style and atmosphere of its own while borrowing flavours of movies like Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. The scene framing and the use of a muted colour palate is beautiful.

Much of Sucker Punch plays out as a music video. It often uses music as a replacement for internal narration or dialogue; you have to listen to the lyrics for full effect. Of particular note is a cover version of The Smiths' song Asleep, whose lyrics hit every element that the critics seem to be missing. It’s a truly depressing song about
[Show spoiler]being resigned to suicide
; a sentiment that foreshadows the ending. The song is sung early in the film, shortly after the opening sequence which sets up the emotional events that are intended to drive the story. Missing the punch of those lyrics is also missing Baby Doll’s sense of desperation.

The next greatest musical choice is the use of Bjork’s Army of Me. The mix used in the movie is so visceral and pounding, it sets up the whole atmosphere of female empowerment very effectively. Again, if you gloss over the lyrics, you miss the unspoken realisations occurring in her head.

Ok, so those are some things that were done really well in my book. So what’s missing? Following the initial set-up, the remainder of the movie plays out like a paint-by-numbers series of action sequences that made me feel like I was lounging on a friend’s couch watching them play the latest video game. I did enjoy turning off the brain and watching these sequences for their fluidity, but at the end of the day there was very little sense of peril or tension.

The good news is that most of the problems this movie has might actually be solved by adding back in the cut material. For now I’ll give this movie a 3/5, although I understand scores as low as 2/5 if you’re not into a narrative free (read music video) style of story-telling. I can only recommend this theatrical version to those of you who are able to watch a movie and not take it too seriously. I could see an extended cut involving more character development reaching a possible 3.5/5.

Food rating:

[Show spoiler]A nice looking cream puff, short on filling, with a bite out of it

Looks like I'll be taking a chance on this at the theater.

Since last posting, I watched…

The Poseidon Adventure.”
[Show spoiler]
Not to be confused with the “Poseidon Adventure” Hallmark miniseries (which sucked so bad it was funny) or the remake “Poseidon” (which was entertaining, but short and weak).

Just about every disaster movie has certain basic elements: one impressive action setpiece with lots of mass destruction and collateral damage, followed by the bickering of idiotic or whiny characters, followed by obstacles and stunts that might defy common sense (or the laws of physics). Yep, there’s plenty of room for these films to become absurd and stupid.

I’m not sure what the first disaster movie really is, but “The Poseidon Adventure” is surely one of the original classics in the genre, featuring the above elements (without being too stupid about it, thank goodness). It takes its time setting up the characters for the first half-hour, but afterward…BAM! Tidal wave flips a cruise ship over, wreaking havoc on the decks! From there on out, the film turns into a suspenseful journey across treacherous terrain and obstacles, with loads of explosive drama along the way. The film has a few dumb moments, as characters frequently hesitate to move in the face of danger, or start yelling at each other over control of the situation, etc etc… To be fair, this kind of drama is probably realistic to some extent, and it’s especially original for a film this old. It might come off as annoying, depending on how critically you view the film (I personally don’t mind this nearly as much as in other disaster films).

The story is simple, but original, clever, and populated with an impressive cast of characters. Though a disaster movie at heart, there is also a strong focus on the Reverend’s character and his unorthodox idealism (the idea that people should help themselves rather than waiting for divine intervention). The whole movie provides a solid philosophical platform to put his theory to the test, as characters often debate the choice of staying put and waiting for a rescue, or actively searching for a way out. The goal of this adventure might as well be figurative salvation; most of the characters manage to survive following the Reverend’s unpopular advice, while everybody else perishes. It all cumulates to a hellish (and almost literal) trial-by-fire that will push everybody to their limits and reveal their innermost grief. Overall, a nice rough-and-gritty disaster flick with some interesting philosophical themes at work.

The film is splendid and has splendid photography. Acting is great; Gene Hackman is pretty darn passionate as the Reverend, Ernest Borgnine is very hard-edged, and the two create a dynamic interchange that fuels most of the movie’s conflict. Also can’t go wrong with Red Buttons, Roddy McDowall, Jack Albertson, Carol Lynley, and everybody else. Production value is pretty high for its time, featuring loads of impressive sets and lots of quality props and costumes. Special effects are dated, but used sparingly. Music is good.

4/5 (entertainment: 4/5, story: 4/5, film: 4/5, intellectual impact: 3/5)

Recommendation: Yes!

If they Blu-Ray it, I will buy it!

Sgt Bilko.”

One of my favorites when I was a kid. Even today, it’s quite a blast watching Steve Martin play the title character with such energy and swagger. The dialogue is fast and frequently funny. There’s not much slapstick or outlandish sight gags, but the film maintains its humor best with a series of amusing situations and goofy characters. Maybe not a classic, but I find it entertaining as heck, and I’d rank it as my favorite military-themed comedy (just slightly ahead of “Stripes,” which was probably more outlandish than this).

The story’s simple, easy, and light. The characters are mostly one-dimensional, but incredibly likable. Parts of it are unbelievable (let’s face it, characters like these could never be in the Army, and their antics would never be tolerated in the real world)…but who cares? At the very least, the film takes itself seriously enough to showcase quality conflict between the different characters, and to present the story without pulling any punches.

As a film, it’s pretty average. Photography is good, never exceptional. Acting is great; Steve Martin is hilarious and lively, Phil Hartman is awesome as the antagonist, and all of the other soldiers in the mix are sufficiently goofy and distinctive as well. Production value is moderate, with decent (and somewhat realistic) sets, props, costumes, and one cool hover-tank! Music is good.

4/5 (entertainment: 5/5, story: 3.5/5, film: 3/5)

Recommendation: Sure, why not?

“Alright you’ve seen real soldiers before! Just…do what they do!”

A View to a Kill.”
[Show spoiler]
The final film starring Roger Moore as 007 (though not the final in this here marathon). I’ve also always considered this his most serious effort (although “FYEO” might be a grade more serious than this). What comedy Moore brings to this film is used sparingly. Parts of the film might drag a little, as it is quite dry without the humor, but the action scenes are worthwhile, as Bond skis like mad in the opening scenes, drives like mad in Paris, clings to a truck in San Francisco, endures many shoot-outs, and finally confronting Zorin in an epic fight on top of the Golden Gate Bridge. Ah yeah…

The story’s original and solid, showing solid connections to the mystery that Bond unravels in this adventure. Characters are decent too; Zorin is an effective villain, and it’s interesting to finally have one who is literally psychotic. The film overall has a somewhat modernist theme, as it focuses on Silicon Valley, microchip production, and often showcases computer technology and robots (without going overboard).

As a film, this one is okay. Photography is pretty good. Acting is great; Roger Moore is still the man, Christopher Walken is great as the villain, Tanya Roberts is hot and appealing, and Grace Jones is an animal! Production value is good; plenty of quality sets, props, costumes, and locales. Music is great; I love the rockin’ theme song, and the score’s good too.

4/5 (entertainment: 4/5, story: 4/5, film: 4/5)

Recommendation: Sure.

Default The Life Of Oharu

The Life Of Oharu

Japan 1952
Directed by Kenji Mizoguchi
With Kinuyo Tanaka, Tsukie Matsuura, Ichirô Sugai, Toshirô Mifune

Format : HDTV (TFO)

My second movie from Kenji Mizoguchi. This one is a historical drama about a young noble woman who fall's in love with a page and his banish by her family after his death. It's about the difference in social status and what was acceptable and what wasn't in feudal Japan. The story of the life of Oharu is one of a woman who tries many things but is never quite succesful at any of them and often experience disapointment. I must say I did not enjoy this one as much as I did the previous one, Miss Oyu. It wasn't exactly boring but I felt it wasnèt moving as well and the actors were not as interesting to me. part of it in the middle dragged on a bit too long as well for me.

I would call this one a movie that I am glad I saw but one I won't care much to see again.

Default Robin & Marian

Robin & Marian

USA/Britain 1976
Directed by Richard Lester
With Audrey Hepburn, Sean Connery, Robert Shaw, Nicol Williamson

Format : HDTV (MoviePix)

What would have been the story of Robin & Marian if he had return from the crusade an old man? This movie tries to show what that could have been like. Robin after 20 years away return to England along with John. The country he once knew is long gone and Marian is now a now. However, Robin being Robin, he quickly manage's to get under the sheriff's skin and the good old days are back. This movie is not as popular as other Robin Hood stories but I always enjoyed it for two reasons. The first is of course Audrey Hepburn as Marian (did you really had to ask that ) and the second is Sean Connery as Robin. He does a great job showing us a agin hero, past his prime but still as in his heart the will to do good. I do understand that action wise it's not really there when you compared it with other Robin movies but the charme is there. It's one of my favorite Robin movies (and I can tell you I have many of them on DVD) and I never get tired of seeing it.

This was my first time seeing it in HD. It wasn't AOR but they kept the grain intact and it did look wonderful. I cannot wait for the Blu-ray release. I highly recommend this if you never seen it.

Back to the Future

This is a little unknown movie from the 80s; most of you probably have never even heard of it actually.

It's about....

I love this movie, but it's one of those ones that if I don't watch it for a while I forget how much I do love it (like Forrest Gump). Which makes for a more time when I finally do rewatch it

It's fun, it's funny, it's slightly adventurous, it even has some grimness to it...oh and it has this awesome song.

Michael J. Fox is great as Marty and his chemistry with Christopher Lloyd is fantastic.

But picking between them for who is my favorite person in the movie...it is easily Christopher Lloyd. His delivery, his facial expressions, his random screams/shrieks...it's all absolutely hysterical.

Best part of the film:
[Show spoiler]

I was going to get the trilogy when it came out...then decided to wait on a lower price...then decided not to get it at all because of the packaging and wavering on if I really wanted to own them or not. Now, when they release them in single editions, I'll definitely be picking up the first film (but not 2 and 3...though I do like them).

They are pretty popular to bash around here. I don't think they are as crappy as their reputation suggests...but they definitely aren't very good imo (the first two that is, I haven't seen the 3rd).

I gave the first I think a 2/5 and the second a 2.5/5.

I don't really thrash them, I mean let's be honest I wasn't the target audience for those stories (movies). It's the sort of romance stuff women go for and that we just don't understand.

Agreed, we definitely aren't the target audience. That audience does seem to HIGHLY enjoy the films though.

When the third film came out there were t-shirts for sell at the theater that said Team (the vampire guy) and Team (the wolf guy).

I'd be really interested to see what you have to say about that one, because some of the guys in here have given it some positive scores...which I really didn't expect

I will go with Scott Pilgrim then, the other is safe on the DVR and I don't like keeping the rental for to long. I will write a review when I am done. I remember the previews (I never saw the comic book) and it did look alright when I saw them, it did look like it could be fun.

That's what the guys around here said it was basically. Ridiculous and fun. I may have to look into it one day

Speaking of DVR...I'm going to be watching my DVR'd A River Runs Through It or Crash tonight...haven't decided which.

I think some would say this is one of the best "sports movies" around, which when looked at in that way, yes, it is. But I don't think it is a sports movie. It's a movie that does involve sports, but that is not what it is truly about.

This movie is about a group of high school kids, their coaches and a city dealing with racism in the 1970s, learning to live with each other (or for some not doing so) and accepting each other as the same and forming new friendships and respect for their fellow man.

The movie has some bits of comedy and also some bits of drama held within its story; and both work very well.

Denzel Washington basically plays Denzel Washington again...but that's never a bad thing. He does a very good job as the head coach. Definitely the best thing about this movie.

The rest of the main cast each do their jobs fine and bring what they needed to bring to the table; the weakest is probably the guy who played Ray.

And if you like "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" this movie is for you

Rating - 4.5/5
This is one of my top 5 films period of all time. Just an excellent uplifting film! Got Em!!
