Got an e.mail from Zavvi just now about price drops on steelbooks, so trawled the Zavvi site. (As I posted before, I only ever get the "Buy! Buy! Buy!" e.mails, not the "Let us make it cheaper for you" ones. )

Anyway. I occasionally get amused finding typos on web pages, especially when they make other words. (I'm not pretending I don't make typos myself, of course.) Does anyone remember seeing a film called Percy Jackson and the Lighting Thief? Something about a tireless council worker solving a problem with streetlamps, maybe?

It's despicable. I'm cancelling my pre-orders for Toy Story 1-3 and Fanatasia.

I find it highly annoying that zavvi cant dispatch in time to get the item on release day. Its always 1 day to 1 week late.

I ordered the Evil Dead steel this morning and I hope it arrives safe and sound,it's not a great time to be purchasing steelbooks in flimsy packaging considering how busy Royal Mail are at the moment, fingers crossed eh.

Total on the sale I ordered:

I, Robot
Independence Day
Captain America
E.T.
Taxi Driver

I'm not ordering anything else, especially since I spent more than I should have anyway.

I will not pre-order from Zavvi anymore.

Some people have not received their steelbooks yet, and the price of the steelbook that they ordered went 5GBP down.

They are not professional retailers, they have bad packaging and its better to wait couple of weeks , so you can get the steelbook at a good price

Got Nightmare Before Christmas. Lightweight steelbook? Nothing like real steel books.

I have not received an order from them in Ohio later than 9 days after being shipped to this point.

I have received two Steelbooks that were shipped by Amazon UK that were JUST the shrink wrapped Steelbook in a very large cardboard box. Fortunately neither were damaged. Zavvi at least has some minimal protection instead of ZERO protection. None has been damaged as I have mentioned.

I am trying to cancel my Toy Story 1,2,3 and Fantasia, but they were tied to orders that had other SBs that shipped. When I go to cancel they don't show up as even being tied to an email that I can request a cancellation. I have sent an email tying my request to another order, but I don't know if they will read the emails enough actually do it. Is there a better way to handle this.

with so many people complaining and swearing off pre-ordering, I have a feeling that Zavvi will become burdened with old stock. This will be good for us on liquidation of said stock. However, it will not bode well for future releases. They may just decide that it isn't worth the hassle if they have to break even or sell at a loss to get rid of stock and just not bother having them made in the first place.

I see your point but disagree. Retailers will always be found selling products wherever there are profits to be made, even with smaller margins. If hypothetically zavvi did pull out of the steels market, someone would step into their place. If we all held out and waited for price drops, they'd stop taking the **** in the first place. If I remember rightly play.com had it right before they stopped being a direct retailer. Good fair prices, that sold out fast. It's not rocket science. But no way will I ever pay release price on any of zavvi's new releases. As the price drops on pretty much everything bar the Disney releases have shown, doing so is a mug's game imo, but people can keep lining zavvi's pockets at their own expense by diving in on release day if they so choose.

People claiming to "boycott" zavvi is much akin to people "voting with their wallets". A concept that hasn't worked in over 3 decades, spanning several formats.
Hey more power to those people that wish to hold out for the best price, but for every one that holds out 4 or 5 will swarm right in to scoop up the product.
And people keep mentioning Play.com and their prices from a few years ago, well sorry but inflation does happen. Materials costs rise, fuel prices rise, employees salaries rise, etc. Now I'm not saying they rise at the rate Zavvi has presented, but they rise nonetheless, year in/year out.
With that said, I don't think Zavvi will get out of the steelbook business any time soon, as it's clearly been quite successful for them.

Waiting for an inevitable price drop isn't a 'boycott'. I'm still a customer who will likely return because they sell something I want. I probably sound like a miser, but in practise my approach to collecting has saved me a fair few quid along the way that I can in turn invest in more bang for my buck. But best of luck to those for whom release prices aren't seen as a problem at all. I sincerely wish I was in that fortunate position!

I am actually worried about this myself. Zavvi have filled the void left by Play.com and I haven't actually had any problems with them. Yes they are annoying at times, but I'm glad that a retailer is still releasing Steelbooks and we are now starting to see some decent prices which is great. I don't think it is sustainable though.

I don't think anyone would step in to their place. If there was real money to be made, Amazon would have destroyed everyone else and claimed the title of the 'Home of Steelbooks'. I seriously don't think Zavvi are making a profit selling Steelbooks at £5.99/£6.99/£7.99 a go. I think Zavvi are changing strategy already. So far we only have Disney/Pixar and Kubrick titles plus Machete Kills for next year. I think they are trying to stick to ones that are guaranteed to sell well wherever possible.

Sorry to change the subject here a bit...

Also sorry, if this question has been asked before, and answered (just call me the lazy searcher here).

I had 2 steelbooks in my cart at Zavvi, but they seemed to have disappeared. When I tried to search for the titles in their database, they aren't even listed at the moment. They don't even show as "sold out". Jackie Brown and Pan's Labyrinth. Is it because they are getting close to dispatching for those who have already placed their orders?
