The ST2084 transfer function is absolute, so either the set follows it (up until a reasonable distance from the clipping point) or it doesn't. I really wish they had required that all UHD sets include a reference mode with no tonemapping, just follow ST2084 as far as possible, but they didn't and here we are with no way of telling what's what. Calibration doesn't work because many sets will adjust the tonemapping depending on the content and metadata. Pretty much the only way to know for sure if you're getting the correct image or not, is to look at the code values in the raw encoded stream and check against the output luminance and see if they match according to the ST2084 function. |

I had cancelled my Braveheart and Gladiator pre-orders when they didn't ship before release date. Then woke up a bit earlier before work on release date and re-ordered them for in-store pickup that day. No problems. Might be worth a go. If it's a Best Buy exclusive, then Shirley they would have a healthy amount of stock.

Entirely wiggle room for the 30th anniversary to have a tangible benefit/reason to be re-released (theatrically, this is how studios justify the tens of millions cost), with touched up CGI textures/lighting. No point messing w/the animation choices. I just hope if they did all this they'd retain original design aesthetic not introducing colours and details that the sequels had! Then for a treat have 85-90% Sony results on grain management w/a pristine UHD 4K transfer. I would double dip and feel comfortable to spend $35 premium on UHD Blu-ray for it. See it in cinema, the whole smash. |

I feel there's no reason why they shouldn't update the CGI in Jurassic Park as long as they take the stance that Peter Jackson has.
Peter Jackson has said he will eventually go back and update the CGI in Lord of the Rings (Gollum in Fellowship of the Ring being his main priority) but will leave the unaltered versions of the films readily available for people who want them (any new release with the updated CGI will also contain the original version). That I think is the best way to approach it. For Jurassic Park's next release, they should offer a "Jurassic Park Remastered" option with remastered CGI while also including the unaltered version of the film. That way, you can offer better picture quality in the CGI shots will also not annoying those who'd prefer the film be left untouched. |
