You were in the same situation as me. I replace my 60 with a 320 and didn't have a current backup when it went YLOD. Your only real choice is a DIY repair, do a backup and use it until YLOD's again (it WILL YLOD again - mine lasted about a month). I'd recommending getting your full backup and then doing a Deactivate since you can't do it from the web site only from the actual PS3 you're using.

Try fixing it yourself. It happened to me sometime last month and I just followed the YouTube tutorial. It worked like a charm. The total cost for me to fix it my self was $20. I didn't want to be without my PS3 for weeks, especially with the upcoming release of GoW III. Plus, from reading posts on this site, the fix from Sony is only guaranteed to last for 3 months, which means you can expect to be sending it back to Sony soon after you get it back.

When I had to send mine in I was only without a PS3 for a week or so. I don't see why there would be a long turn around time when they just ship a different one out to you. I feel for you in your situation regarding the save data on your hard drive though. Hopefully you can get it going again on your own and make a backup.

Anyway, what's the hair dryer trick? Don't think I've read that one yet. Another issue I have is that I have 2 of the original 60-gig PS3s and I've switched around the 60-gig hard drives a couple of times as I upgraded the drives, tested some things, etc. Then, at one point I went to use one of the 60-gig drives again and it no longer worked. So, should I just send in the PS3 with that drive or does it have the be the exact one that was in the PS3 to begin with and if so, how do I know which one. Or, can I just send it back with basically some other drive that works where I don't care what they do with it. |

Sucks to be you guys.
I've heard of two 60gb machines biting the dust recently on another forum of less than 25 people in total. Both played GOW3 recently on it. Maybe that game is pushing the system elements to unknown boundaries. I'm backing up my system before I play that game hehe. |

I tried it when my launch 80 gig died. It is kind of intimidating, but really not all that bad. I don't think I did the thermal paste correctly because after all was finished my PS3 booted up and then went back to YLOD after 15 minutes. |

Quick tip is that when the motherboard is cooling, make sure its completely level. Sure it may seem like a no brainer, but its a very important thing to make sure happens.

I'd be really interested if only isolated items were missing. Almost like they imaged the drive and replaced the unit? Was it the same s/n? If they change the mobo, it's practically a new device.
Any of you guys timid about doing it, it is really easy. If you've ever replaced a PC motherboard, you can definitely do that. Taking a heat gun is a bit unconventional... just blow it over the chips for the prescribed period and then it's just letting it cool and put it back together. It is very easy to assemble and disassemble with those tabs and what not. |
