I don't think it was a happy mistake since her character is kinda pathetic and extremely uncomfortable in her skin.
She played a rather simple and less than confident character
Goofy predominantly wore orange, not red. It's a complete stretch to say Kubrick was channeling Goofy of all things.

True. Very true.

But, the Goofy figurine in The Shining and Wendy in The Shining were more than likely purposely dressed in the same colors and clothes ... for whatever reason; inside joke. hidden narrative. love for Disney.

I've always thought the face on The Shining movie poster looks like Kubrick in his younger days before the beard and mustache.

I enjoyed Room 237, but each segment seemed like a teaser for larger documentaries, they didn't really go into the theories as much as I'd hoped. I wonder if they might have been cut down to fit?

Perhaps 'boredom' was too strong a word but yes, I believe the American cut of The Shining is poorly paced. Always have. I still love watching any cut of the film as there's just so much to take from it (I've probably watched it more than any other Kubrick film even if I don't think it's his strongest and most of those viewings were of the American version). But it was only once I saw the shorter Euro cut that I found myself feeling that the narrative wasn't getting in the way of all the other compelling aspects of the film: acting, camera work by Kubrick, iconic imagery, symbolism, etc.

Really though, the above reactions are quite silly. Kubrick himself obviously recognized the issues with The Shining's initial length and thus took a hacksaw to it for the European release. He didn't make a point of taking that shorter cut out of circulation after the initial theater release either (something I'm sure he'd have no problem doing considering how he handled ACO in Britain) so it would seem that he considers both cuts valid.

And FYI, I prefer horror films like The Exorcist, Rosemary's Baby and yes, The Shining over gorefests and jump scare trash (though those films have their place as well). I'm also a huge fan of Bartok, and Kubrick's musical selections in general, so the claim that someone who has issues with The Shining would prefer a bass heavy soundtrack is particularly off the mark. Kubrick's use of Bartok especially in this is masterful and the scene where a catatonic Jack tries to 'comfort' Danny on his bed with the Music for Strings... playing in the background might be my favorite all-time Kubrick scene.

I was just having a bit of fun calling those bored by The Shining philistines, I realize the film doesn't work for everyone (what film does?). Like so much of Kubrick's work, I find the film hypnotic and it remains unlike any other horror film I've ever seen; that's no small feat. people are going to have opinions to the contrary, of course, and I respect that.

That being said, I was out with some co-workers for drinks recently and one of them divulged that he was bored blind by 2001 and Blade Runner. I just looked at him wordlessly over my beer...silently judging him.

Might as well admit it: 2001 has always been a struggle for me to get through. Spectacularly shot film and very profound (and once again brilliant music selections) but I go back to it less often than any other Kubrick film from Paths of Glory onward with the possible exception of Lolita. I'm not gonna claim it would benefit from any trimming though as the material obviously requires a glacial pace if you don't want to cheapen it.

Can't understand someone being bored in any way by Blade Runner though. It's got something for everyone: sci-fi, film noir, philosphophizing, spectacular imagery and music. The new one is a bit more one-note and does indeed feel longer but I had no problem with its pacing either.

That's why you'll enjoy Rob Ager's Collative Learning pages dedicated to all things The Shining.
He was even asked to be a part of Room 237 but turned them down because... Well... Here's his reason why;

http://www.collativelearning.com/ageronfilm/?p=156

I kinda wish he were in Room 237. Would have given it that extra thing you were talking about; turn it from a teaser to a big hidden narrative analysis.
But I understand his reasons why he declined

Oh, after my intentionally awkward and dramatic silence I attempted to not so much correct him as school him...but some people can't be reached. Honestly, he's a nice enough guy, but his idea of classic comedy is early Adam Sandler and his idea of great Sci-Fi is Independence Day (before the haters start in, I can appreciate that film on its own silly and mindless terms).

I was responding to Alex, so it's his fault.
But seriously, I've never seen the Euro cut, so I can't even comment on the differences you have pointed out. I'm sure I would still prefer the longer cut in comparison today.

Yeah. Kubrick definitely dressed Wendy to look like that particular Goofy doll. 100%. Why? Who knows? But it's definitely intentional. Otherwise, why put them in the same outfit, the same colors and in the exact same frame of the same scene?

Come on... BOTH are in the same frame!
It's a "complete stretch" to say it was just a coincidence.
Especially since her character is rather goofy.
The wardrobe department would have had to search for the exact same tones.

If you think Kubrick doesn't pay attention to details there's nothing more I want say to you.

Yes, Kubrick was a control freak including with the wardrobe department.

It's definitely not a love for Disney.
Why would a true inovator love a factory who cranks out the same cliched crap?
However, there is a homage to one of his favorite Directors...Hitchcock.

I, personally, believe it was to give her a child like innocence or even to show her as a loving, dedicated mom expressing her love for Danny.
But these are only theories.

btw- Didn't this outfit not make the final cut?
Perhaps it was too much for Kubrick in the end much like the warning Jack got about getting lost in the maze.
To me that warning smacked of the hilarious warning Jack got about the furnace blowing up above a certain point in King's version.

Oh Just threw that "love for Disney" in for a joke.

There's no denying, and you all agree, that Kubrick dressed Wendy like Goofy on purpose.
