Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs - I been on a animated marathon and maybe that hurt the viewing of this film. I was expecting to really like this film but that wasnt the case. It was a decent film but I was expecting more. Maybe I watched to many animated films in a row and need to mix it up. I think it was the concept that I didnt like as much as other folks. It was kind of corny to me and I think thats why the film fell just a bit short. I did like the cameraman/doctor/pilot/comedian haha. He was funny but only had a couple of parts in the film where he was given attention. Got Em!!
Film Rating - 3 stars (out of 5) |

[Show spoiler] ![]() I guess I can understand you not getting too into it because of not being able to mesh well with the concept. Is it one you'll revisit someday or is it a one off for you? Quote:

I thought it was awesome, considering the book it was based on really isn't that good. Would give the movie a 4/5, would probably go higher if there weren't so many excellent animated films out there.

Certainly though, if you didn't enjoy the concept, it probably would come off as overly weird, dumb, arbitrary, or whatnot. ![]() You might be burning out from all these animations! Quick, pop in a "Friday the 13th" movie! ![]() |

The Yards: The 1st film that Wahlberg, Joaquin Phoenix and director James Gray worked on. Prior to the 2007 crime drama We Own the Night. Believed it was filmed in either 1998 or 1999. But didn't see the light of day until 2000, very limited release.
Blink and you missed it. Criminal Law: 1989 thriller that starred Kevin Bacon and Gary Oldman. Last edited by ForEver Blu; 04-06-2011 at 04:56 PM. |

In my entire life, I have only gone back to the theater for a second viewing of a movie once. That was "When a Man Loves a Woman" in 1994.
I might go see Sucker Punch again today. I'll buy it on Blu-ray, but the visuals just beg for a BIG screen. I'll probably sit a couple rows closer too. ![]() |

Last night, I played a couple of movies that turned into immediate background viewing.
One was a remake of “Harvey,” apparently. Pretty much the exact same story, same characters, just all in color with different actors. But it’s a less compelling story, less interesting characters, and the actors sucked. Leslie Nielson has a role as Dr Chumley, which was amusing, but the main stars pale terribly compared to the actors in the original (Jimmy Stewart, ftw!). The comedy is still lighthearted and amusing, but really won’t invoke a whole lot of side-splitting laughter or anything. Cinematically, it was pretty average too. It’ll probably be serviceable for people not already familiar with the old movie or the original play, but I seriously do recommend the original film over this bland flick. 3/5 (entertainment: 3/5, story: 4/5, film: 2/5) Recommendation: No. Watch the original instead. The other film I saw was “Kull the Conquerer.” I saw it in the thrift shop and was about ready to dismiss it as something trashy, but then the producer’s name caught my eye. Ah, didn’t de Laurentiis produce the ever-awesome “Conan the Barbarian?” And “Dune?” And “Army of Darkness.” ![]() Wait…crap, that was Dino de Laurentiis. This one’s done by Rafaella de Laurentiis. Got them mixed up! ![]() ![]() Anyway, the film is indeed cheesy, clichéd, average fantasy fare. With Kevin Sorbo, the dude who once played Hercules in his own show, shows some macho muscles but very little acting prowess (of course). Production value is pretty cheap, and the photography shows just a few bright spots. It is entertaining, moreso than I expected. However, I seriously don’t know what the story was all about. 3/5 (entertainment: 4/5, story: 1/5, film: 3/5) Recommendation: Nah. Watch “Conan the Barbarian” instead. |

Next greatest rental: “Salinui Chueok,” aka “Memories of Murder.”
Murder mysteries and investigations make for some of the more entertaining thrillers in cinema, especially when they’re dark, gritty, intense, or go into some nasty details. Sure enough, “Memories of Murder” accomplishes all of these things. It is indeed dark and moody, with a gritty look and feel at times; the occasional outbursts (whether with fists or emotions) is pretty intense at times, and there are enough gnarly details to each murder to make them wicked and brutal. It’s pacing may not be 100% fast and furious, but the story moves as a methodical pace and presents a lot of interesting scenes with bursts of intense action and suspense. The story is quite well-crafted. It’s not completely original though, as some elements come off as a little typical or clichéd. We’ve all seen mysteries involving good cops, bad cops, one tough chief, and interrogations gone awry; they catch a suspect, but the first one’s never the right one…you get the idea. What makes the movie stand out better are the characters; I did find Park Doo-Man annoyingly unreasonable throughout the first half of the movie, but his hunch-driven techniques clash often with Seo Tae-Yoon’s logic, causing some of the most intense conflict in the film. It’s especially interesting seeing how their dynamic evolves with the story, and they piece clues together to pull in more viable suspects. It makes for a decently deep and immersive mystery, even if parts of it have been done before. Cinematically, the film has excellent photography; the camera work is solid, imagery is quite striking, and the editing is pretty interesting. Acting is great; Kang-ho Song playes a surprisingly likable jerk, and I thought Sang-kyung Kim was cool. Writing seems okay. Production value looks decent, and the music is interesting. 4.5/5 (entertainment: 4/5, story: 4.5/5, film: 4.5/5) Recommendation: Unless you have a horrid aversion to subtitles, then yeah! I think it’d be a good compliment to “Se7en,” “Silence of the Lambs,” and maybe “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” |
