Watched The Coca-Cola Kid last night and thought it was fantastic!! A real gem that will surely find its way into my regular rotation.

The interview with Eric Roberts was pretty sweet too!!

Default The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (1974)

Thanks for posting about this film Bradsdadg. Have to admit I've never heard of it. Have watched the trailer and it might be a FCE release I'd consider getting (have some FCE titles I want to get, and hopefully we'll get some news soon on when Strangers Kiss's Blu-ray release date is).

Checked out The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz on the IMDb, and came across another film I hadn't heard of, The Second Coming of Suzanne (1974), the cast including Jared Martin.

He didn't really come off as the best in the interview by the lead female, but I did really enjoy this one as well! Catchy music and a pretty crazy film overall. I guess any publicity is good for Coke

Haven't heard of this one before now either, but a great cast and an interesting/quirky little film. Sign me up!

I saw DUDDY KRAVITZ in Vancouver, B.C. when it was brand new. I recall liking it, but haven't seen it since then. I might be interested in revisiting it.

THE SECOND COMING OF SUZANNE was an oddball film about a female Christ figure. There was a VHS of it in the late 1980s. I think it was produced by the son of actor Gene Barry, and I think that Barry appears in the film in a small role. Interesting, but no lost masterpiece.

When Dreyfuss initially turned down the part of Hooper when offered the role by Spielberg he then watched his performance in this film and thought ‘I’m never gonna work again’. So we have this film at least to thank for that.

Anything with Jack Warden btw.

Agreed, that was a little cringey.

Dreyfuss also predicted that "Jaws" was going to bomb. With his track record on predictions I'll bet he thought "Inserts" was going to be a big hit. When Duddy Kravitz got rave reviews Dreyfuss read them out loud on the set of "Jaws" which annoyed Robert Shaw quite a bit.

By the way, there was an episode of "Armchair Theatre" from the UK around 1961 that had an adaption of Duddy Kravitz. It was an hour long and only included Duddy's time at the resort. It had the same director Ted Kotcheff. Most of the Armchair Theatres have been preserved, but Wikipedia lists it as missing, it would be great if someone could find it and put it on the Blu-ray.

Great news about Duddy Kravitz. An important film in Canadian film history that I wasn't sure was ever going to get an HD release.

I hope Fun City Editions also considers licensing Isabel (1968) from Paramount. It's another important Canadian film; directed by Paul Almond and stars Genevieve Bujold.

[Show spoiler]

Canada Isabel (1968)

Definitely not heard of the film Isabel (1968) before, but I'm glad I did (have checked it out on the IMDb). Yes, it's certainly the sort of film FCE would do a Blu-ray release of.

I love that Fun Time searches out the more unique titles. Duddy Kravitz is a great choice for them. Count me in!

Criterion should be ashamed that they didn't release it. It's a classic film that nobody has been able to watch in a letterboxed print for 30 years.

I don't think it would be any better if Criterion releases it. Fun City has had one superb release after another, and they have proven themselves to be top a notch label.

KLI mentioned there was some sort of rights issue between Paramount and owners of the Canadian producer and distributor that was holding up a modern release. Guess they sorted it out and given Paramount (if they did create a new master themselves) will probably pop up on streaming/digital sometime before or after the release

OTOH, I wonder if this is a new transfer FC/Paramount created or if it's the purported Canadian HD master making the rounds on iTunes Canada

I know that some Canadian film board paid 150 thousand to have it remastered 10years ago and I would assume that they would use that. I thought they did a great job on it.

Do you have screens or footage of this version?

AFAIK, that restoration used ether an IP or perhaps the OCN. Not sure what elements Paramount have but I'm sure it won't be the same restoration.

No, but I made a DVD-R of it and thought it looked better than many Blu-rays I own. It had an actual mention of the new restoration on the film.
