What is the state of the OCNs for Hard-Boiled/The Killer? Do they still exist? Good subtitles would be nice too, rather than the insulting hack jobs we so often see from Chinese films.

I just want to finally retire my Criterion DVDs.

From what I've been told, they do exist, but the company that owns them has a tight lock on them and don't seem to be willing to negotiate when it comes to anything to do with these films. However, I have heard other stories as well, so I'm not sure what's true and what's not.

The ratio of stuff that interests me hasn't really changed lately. I can't say that I feel disappointed in their output the way others have been feeling lately. Although, the stuff that has interested me lately has mostly been upgrades of titles they had previously released. I want to get the 'Three Colours Trilogy' and 'Dazed & Confused'.

Every month I get my faintest of hopes up that they'll pick back up with their relationship with Pedro Almodóvar and I can finally retire my 'Talk to Her' DVD. But my hopes never get too high.

It would also be nice if they would just do a standalone 4K release of 'Chungking Express' so that I can buy that and 'In the Mood for Love' without going in for that expensive box set with the annoying packaging and a bunch of films that, although I like most of them, I don't really feel like revisiting more than every decade or two.

I know it's tempting but don't buy the dynasty bluray for The Killer, even as a small upgrade to hold you over. Off the top of my head, it's the worst bluray I've ever owned. It's very strangely authorized, not only an atrocious master to start with, but the way they put it on disc makes no sense. Excusing the old master itself, there is something seriously off about it anyway. It just looks weird.

You know Studio Canal are releasing the Musketeer films on 4K in April?

Do you know if they will be region-free?

Yup, with Studio Canal's track record, the Blu-rays are bound to be region locked, but as you say, the 4Ks should be okay. With the Three/Four Musketeers being released in Europe at the end of April, I suppose they could well be part of the Criterion May releases. We shall see...

There's at least two things I know to be true after announcements, people will complain about them and someone will say 'Nothing for me this month'.

Well, there is also the flipside to that.

Multiple people will almost always say, "Best month in a loonnng time!"

And someone will always say, "Best Month Ever!"

And, yes, some guy that never buys Criterions anyway will go, "Zzzzzzz...."

Don't forget the condescending dismissal directed at people who aren't interested in picking up films that already have in-print Blu-rays from other labels, sometimes with more extras.

Not getting my hopes up for either, but would love some Paul Thomas Anderson or Coen Brothers in todays announcements. It's been awhile now but Roger Deakins said on a podcast a few years back that Criterion was working on The Man Who Wasn't There. Who knows! Would also love Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid to finally pop up!

I mainly fall into the category of the guy that always gripes that the announcements are 'late', LOL.

By the way, I'm feeling that vibe today, too. Hope I'm wrong.

I'm not gonna say that we're going to get announcements after hours, but...

I honestly usually don't mind an announcement delay because we usually find out one title with their tweet anyways. But I do kind of wonder if they're planning on delaying until after this sale is over tomorrow. Who knows. Either way we'll either get announcements, or a tweet revealing one today. Sounds like a win to me.
