Went to a matinee Saturday afternoon in Vancouver suburbs. The whole theatre was dead. I mean the whole multiplex, not just for The Fall Guy. Probably aboutb10 people seeing Fall Guy.
I don't know? Maybe people just not wanting to spend the money? Weird though that even no kids in the whole multi-plex seeing other things? It was a sort of overcast day. Can people not even afford to give their kids money to ho see a movie anymore?
I thought this was OK, just felt a bit long. I like Gosling. He had a lot of Zoolander "blue steel" moments that were a bit cheesey. I never saw Leitch's Bullet Train, & might check.it out now.

Also i find it super odd that 'nobody' cares about this movie. Gosling has never been this hot in his career, Universal has been marketing this thing ALOT and it's been getting a bunch of good reviews.

on paper this should be a big hit? i just don't get what today's audience wants (studios either hah). I guess because this isn't a sequel or a known IP?

Hell i couldnt even go see Fall Guy in IMAX at my favorite theater because it was STILL playing Dune Part Two! Which funny enough had more seats sold than this movie lol

I think even Apes next week is a hard sell as well. advance tickets have been on sale for close to a month now and there's barely a dent in the seats sold in my city.

Whats the next giant hit? Deadpool? Despicable me 4?
I don't care to watch this film in the theaters. It looks like a high budget streaming movie to me. Like Extraction but action comedy instead.

Couldn’t be further from the truth. Also Extraction should be played in theaters it’s better than 99% of action films actually released in multiplexes

They could have reduced the budget by taking out Teresa Palmer and Stephanie Hsu, they did absolutely sod all.

I’ll watch this online in 2 weeks.
Fall Guy will still have the biggest opening for a non-franchise 'original' since Oppenheimer to be fair, albeit narrowly over Bob Marley.

I'm sure the movie within the movie increased the budget lol. And obviously, there's a ton of CGI in action sequences. It's still something that would be best enjoyed in theaters.

I think the big problem is that over the past two decades, we’ve trained audiences to expect a major franchise entry to launch the summer movie season and likely Planet of the Apes is going to be the one that feels most at home as the May summer launcher. Someone else on here put it best when they said it feels like the perfect “late” summer film, if this came out in August where blockbusters feel a little more lightweight and general, it would have really landed and had great legs.

Props to Universal for taking the plunge, having the confidence to place this right at the opening gates and risking a non-established IP, but sadly it wasn’t meant to be. Apes or even Furiosa would have had a better chance. I wouldn’t be surprised if Thunderbolts ends up making a killing next year this same weekend just due to force of audience habits.

The Fall Guy’ Kicks Off Summer Movie Season With Disappointing $28 Million Debut

Legs could be decent given the A- Cinemascore.

I wouldn't have recognized Teresa Palmer if she hadn't been in the credits.

The lingering issue is there is a growing disinterest in movies among younger audiences. Watching a movie is a chore for them. They are accustomed to quick and disposable entertainment on social media. Asking them to watch a movie is 90-120 mins where they can't browse on their phone. It's a daunting obstacle for Hollywood's future. I don't see how they can lure in an audience who doesn't hold the attention span for a movie.

I'm just gonna copy and paste what I wrote on my Facebook encouraging people to get out to this one. It doesn't deserve to fail.

Wow! The Fall Guy was the most fun I've had at the cinema in maybe a couple of years. Don't get me wrong, I've seen some good ones like Guardians Vol. 3, Oppenheimer, and Civil War, but this sticks every possible landing for a multi genre film. The action is superb, the rom-com situations are not overly cheesy, it's funny as hell, and Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt have terrific chemistry even if they're not on screen together and just on the phone. There's not really any fourth wall breaks per se but when characters are discussing the movie within the movie, The Fall Guy will sometimes mimic what the dialogue. As usual with David Leitch who worked on Deadpool, the John Wick franchise, and Bullet Train, the fight scenes are incredibly well choreographed. Who better than a former stuntman to direct a film about a stuntman. If you're looking for a good time at the movies, run, don't walk for this one.

Not worth the effort to see it theatrically, especially at $13+. Gosling is likable like Burt Reynolds circa 1980, but the story, direction, and production all leave a lot to be desired. Disappointing.

Oh, and go ahead and give the best supporting actor Oscar to the pup who played Jean Claude. Loved every scene with him.

I think the purported lack of attention span for young audiences is overblown. The massive success of Dune Part Two - a much longer, more slowly-paced film than The Fall Guy - speaks to that. The bigger issue is that audiences are not incentivized to go out to the movies unless it's a big event. Most Americans do not have the same spending power they had pre-covid, and movie theaters are an easy thing to cut back on when you have endless entertainment options at home and new releases generally come out on VOD within a couple months anyway. The Fall Guy is not based on a recognizable IP (the TV show is not well-known to modern audiences who weren't born when it was airing - I'd certainly never heard of it - and the marketing never highlighted the connection anyway) and didn't have particularly strong buzz leading up to release, certainly nothing on the level of Barbenheimer.

I think the studio expected more from the movie since its stars were in Barbie and Oppenheimer, but tbh they're not generally huge box office draws. Gosling in particular has been attached to some notable flops like The Nice Guys and Blade Runner 2049 (good movies, but not money-makers). I think the opening weekend is pretty much in line with what a goofy action-rom-com would get, but like with all the other blockbusters that underperformed last year, the budget was too high.

[Show spoiler]Well it wasn't entirely surprising, I kinda thought it would turn out to be Cole but it was an actual actor instead. Wonder how much Momoa got for that extended cameo.

She seems like an OK person, but her fanbase is absolutely fanatical. I'm talking along the lines of
[Show spoiler]MAGA dorks
. Her music isn't even really good. I was married to a Swiftie for 5 years and put up with it but now that I'm single, I don't have to and it was one of the best things I got out of the divorce outside of keeping the dogs.
