It is impossible for this film to be released in 4K UHD because Disney owns international rights and he has banned all physical media. This also applies to other brands such as Omen, The Fly and other similar brands he has acquired. The only hope or possibility is for a change of management at Disney or you will ask for the company to go out of business.

And yet Disney handed off their home video distribution to Sony. Disney & Sony also released some surprising 4K Steelbooks and Lilo & Stitch (2001) to 4K standard. The Sound of Music, Master and Commander, & The Rocky Horror Picture Show are also coming to 4K disc.

If they banned all physical media, why are they releasing discs?

If anyone is gonna get the rights to do "The Fly" on 4K, it'll more than likely be Criterion, given their past working relationship with Cronenberg, also since they'll be putting out "The Shrouds" later this year via Janus Contemporaries, and because Disney only seems to work with them on certain prestige titles.

We want this classic on 4K UHD. I don't care who releases it, as long as it's done correctly.

Disney

of trusted directors and record labels,
Disney 1) doesn't give a spit about 4K and Bluray releases (except of course for those that have huge potential for success, like the stuff for kids or something like the new Dune 1+2 at Warners - there are few titles like that by the standards of current Disney management)

2) it hasn't let an outsider into its archive studio for almost two years at the moment, and it doesn't license 20th Century Fox films to small publishers studios, and it basically doesn't license its own films either)

3) It has a deal with Sony Pictures, which will sporadically pick and choose what it will release from the Disney catalogue of films (but really more 20th Century Fox classics), and fortunately the latter is allowed into the archives.

They're not releasing much from Disney - they're releasing about four films announced this year that the discussion mentions, and they're not minor films.

Criterion? Small company. It doesn't give a shit that it has released a few Cronenberg stuff - of course it would release them all if it got the license, but Disney won't give it the license. Similarly, you can guess Shout, who released Dead Zone, might release Cronenberg - but all these films they've released are little old movies that had a bit of success once and will probably be partially rotting on your shelf today 🙂 .

The Fly is surely a better candidate, as "everyone knows it" and it's awaited by collectors. But I'd argue that if it comes out, Sony will release it and they'll pick it up as a suitable candidate. No one else. Until that Disney executive retires, that won't change

In fact, 20th Century Fox has long ago self-scanned and cleaned up all of their famous films, including the likes of The Fly and Commando, into 4K for the future. And yet Disney still gives a spit about it, even if they got it on the cheap.

example,
or The French Connection - Disney originally censored it (cop swears at ******s, etc), so you want the original version all the more. But Disney isn't having fun with anyone. Some company has the rights to the Bluray/4K release still from Fox, and they'll probably release a version that will scan from the National American Film Library's copy because it's probably the last uncensored version, Disney doesn't want to give them anything.

if Sony wants it and Disney wants it, it'll go. But maybe Sony has some plans of its own for its films and will probably have to hand over a cut of the profits from Disney films, so it probably won't be some rush of titles.

Why doesn't Disney want it:
Disney makes a huge profit from their theme parks and they also have huge land in Florida with hotels, rich retirement homes, theme parks and just paradise. That makes a lot more than their movie business. The media's generate small money.

Too long, Don’t care.
I wonder why Disney & Sony chose Tombstone and Kingdom of Heaven for 4K releases. I mean they only sold out due to Sony making low stock and fear of missing out.

Also, again Criterion has a deal with Disney for Searchlight and 20th films.

Disney will only put this out if they do a remake or legacy sequel to the Cronenberg film.

I'm pretty happy with the Shout set. 4K would be nice, but this film's disc is LOADED with extras, so it's still worth getting regardless, IMO.

Not to mention, OG audio (and PQ also holds up pretty well)! Haven't heard those 80s stings I remember from my UK VHS of the film, ever since 1990 and heard them again for the first time in decades when I got the Shout set!
BUT I would be all in on the 4k, if said features were carried over!
